When Candice arrived at Zack's office, it was like a lightning bolt striking a quiet day. Avery, engrossed in a spreadsheet, suddenly felt a cold breeze on her back. The sound of heels on the smooth floor was undeniable, and before she could turn around, a voice as sweet as honey filled the air. "Zack, Honey! I just had to drop by and say hi!" Avery's heart pounded against her ribs. Candice, a well-known influencer who promoted cosmetics and craved the spotlight, was a vision of beauty and confidence. Her perfectly styled blonde hair cascaded down her shoulders, framing her sharp cheekbones and bright blue eyes that seemed to sparkle with mischief. Tall and statuesque, she exuded an air of effortless elegance in a dress that clung to her curves like a second skin. Candice, with her perfectly styled blonde hair and a dress that hugged her curves like a second skin, embodied everything. She embodied everything Zack had ever wanted in a woman, or so Avery had always assumed. Zack, caught off guard, looked up from his desk, a mix of surprise and amusement on his face. "Candice! What brings you here?" "Just thought I'd see how my favorite investment banker was doing," Candice purred, her eyes lingering on Avery for a moment too long. A sudden memory flashed in her mind that Avery used to be the young man's former personal maid. Her eyes returned to Avery, the former maid who was now Zack's secretary. A mocking smile spread across Candice's lips as she scrutinized Avery intently. Candice approached Avery, her steps filled with judgment and superiority. Avery, trying to maintain her composure, forced a smile. "Ma'am Candice, it's nice to see you again." "Ah, so you've upgraded from being a maid to a secretary, huh?" Candice whispered, her voice dripping with insult. Despite Candice's insult, Avery didn't back down. She stood tall, her eyes radiating determination and confidence. "Yes, and I'm excelling in my new role just as I did in my previous one," Avery said, her voice carrying a mix of self-assurance. Candice pondered Avery's response. She hadn't expected the former maid to be bold and resilient. But despite her surprise, she didn't falter. "Well, let's see if you can keep up, Avery Martinez," Candice added, her eyes containing a challenge. Avery didn't back down from Candice's challenge, but in her heart, there were flames of defiance. She was determined to prove her worth and capabilities, not just for herself but also for Zack. The battle had begun, and Avery was ready to show that she wouldn't be deterred by any challenge that came her way. Candice, oblivious to the tension in the air, sauntered over to Zack's desk, her perfume— a heady mix of vanilla and jasmine— filling the room. She leaned in close, her voice a husky whisper, "I have a proposition for you, Zack. Something that could be very lucrative for both of us." Avery's stomach twisted in knots. She recognized that look, the one that promised a night of passion and whispered secrets. She grinned. She knew the true relationship between Candice and Zack, but she didn't know how to accept it. Accepting the truth was necessary, but facing her emotions was another battle. Zack, his eyes shifting between Candice and Avery, seemed to sense the shift in the atmosphere. "Candice, maybe we can discuss this later? Avery and I have a lot to get through today." Candice, her smile faltering slightly, nodded. "Of course, Honey. Just call me when you're free." With a final, lingering glance at Avery, she turned and left, her heels clicking away like a mocking rhythm. As the woman left, Avery felt a wave of anger and frustration. She didn't need an explanation from Zack because she wasn't recognized by him as his girlfriend, but her feelings couldn't be denied. Zack would notice Avery's agitation and annoyance, but he didn't know how to react. His secretary seemed to be going through something in secret. The day seemed longer and hotter than usual for Avery. Every click of the keyboard felt like a hammer hitting her head, and every command from Zack felt like a needle piercing her heart. "Avery, please check the figures in the quarterly report. I need to see them before lunch," Zack said, his voice calm and authoritative, as usual. But in Avery's ears, every word felt like an insult. Her hands trembled as she picked up the report, her eyes scanning the numbers like foreign symbols. "Avery, are you okay?" Zack asked, noticing Avery's hesitation. "Yes, why?" Avery replied, her voice carrying a sharp tone she couldn't contain. "You seem off. Is something wrong?" Zack asked, puzzled. "Nothing. Why would I have a problem?" Avery replied, her eyes fixed on her computer screen, but her mind elsewhere. "Okay. Just make sure the report is done before lunch," Zack said, not probing further. Zack was puzzled. His usually lively and cheerful secretary seemed different. She had a new sparkle in her eyes, a sweeter smile, and a different tone in her voice. "What happened to her?" Zack wondered to himself. He didn't know that his forgetfulness of his partner was causing pain in Avery's heart. The thought of his partner being with someone else, and the fact that he didn't remember her, was making her blood boil. Every command from Zack felt like a reminder of their unfair relationship. His demanding nature reminded her of his attractiveness, and his obliviousness reminded her of his indifference. Avery was holding back her anger. She knew her feelings were wrong, but she couldn't help herself. Her heart was filled with pain and resentment, and her mind was filled with negative thoughts. But she didn't know how. Her love for Zack was stronger than her anger, but her jealousy was stronger than her hope. The next morning, Avery woke up with a new determination. Anger gave way to a strong desire to show Zack her worth. She got ready carefully, putting on elegant clothes that hugged her body. She chose a black bodycon dress with a classic neckline and a thin red belt that accentuated her waist. Her eyes sparkled with newfound confidence. When she arrived at the office, Zack immediately noticed the change in his secretary. His eyes went to her new outfit, her smooth skin, and her captivating smile. He couldn't deny Avery's beauty, her sexiness seemed to glow. But he wouldn't show it to her. He didn't want to give the wrong impression, he didn't want to cause further confusion in their relationship. "Good morning, Avery," Zack greeted, his voice calm and professional. "Good morning, sir," Avery replied, her voice slightly more affectionate than she intended. "We have a meeting this afternoon," Zack said. "I need to see the final figures for the presentation." "Yes, sir. I can do that," Avery responded, her eyes fixed on her boss. Zack was puzzled. His secretary seemed different. Her eyes had a new sparkle, her smile sweeter, and her voice had a different tone. "What happened to her?" Zack wondered to himself. He didn't know that his secretary was preparing to compete with the woman he liked. Avery was looking for a way to get Zack's attention, to show him that she, too, was worthy of his love. The afternoon passed quickly. Avery worked diligently, her eyes never straying from Zack. When she finished her work, she approached her boss. "Sir, here are the final figures for the presentation," Avery said, her voice full of confidence. "Thank you, Avery," Zack replied, his eyes fixed on his secretary. At that moment, Avery felt that her efforts had paid off. Zack had noticed her, and her beauty had started to catch his attention. But she hadn't won yet. The battle had only just begun.
