The tunnel was a throat of concrete and rust, swallowing the dim light of the station behind him. Jin-Woo moved with a silence that surprised even himself. His footsteps, once heavy with the fatigue of a failing body, were now light and rhythmic.
He had carved his way through fifteen more Steel-Clawed Stalkers. His tattered hoodie was soaked in black ichor, and his breath came in short, sharp bursts, but he wasn't tired. Every kill sent a microscopic pulse of energy through his limbs.

He stopped at the entrance to the main junction. The tracks here widened into a massive subterranean chamber where several lines converged. In the center, sitting atop a pile of crushed subway cars, was something that made the Stalkers look like house pets.
It was a Calamity Centipede.
Twenty meters of segmented, chitinous armor pulsed with a sickly violet light. Its legs were serrated blades that sparked against the third rail as it shifted. It didn't have eyes; instead, long, whip-like antennae flicked through the air, sensing the vibration of Jin-Woo’s heartbeat.

"Escape isn't an option," Jin-Woo whispered, gripping the Stalker’s Fang. The blue barrier at the entrance was still active. It was kill or be killed.
The Centipede roared—a screeching, metallic sound that shattered the glass of the overhead signals. It moved with terrifying speed, its body rippling over the tracks like a high-speed train.
Jin-Woo threw himself into a roll as the Boss slammed into the concrete pillar where he’d been standing a second ago. The impact sent a spray of stone shards into his back.
He lunged forward, driving the bone dagger into a gap in the creature's armor. Clang. The blade bounced off the reinforced chitin.
"Too thick," he gritted his teeth.
The Centipede swung its massive tail, a heavy bludgeon of bone and scale. Jin-Woo crossed his arms to block, but the force sent him flying thirty feet across the junction. He hit a vending machine, the glass shattering around him.

His vision swam. The monster was rearing up, its mandibles dripping with corrosive acid, preparing for the final strike. Jin-Woo’s hand brushed against a jagged piece of metal from the destroyed machine. His mind raced. He needed something—anything—to bridge the gap.
As the Boss lunged, a new notification flared in his peripheral vision, burning with a violent purple intensity.

"Now!"
Jin-Woo didn't run. He disappeared.
To the Boss, it looked like the human had dissolved into a cloud of ink. In reality, Jin-Woo had stepped into the long shadow cast by the Centipede’s own body. He reappeared directly beneath its soft underbelly—the only spot not covered by armor.
He drove the Stalker’s Fang upward with every ounce of his Strength.
SQUELCH.
The blade sank in up to the hilt. Blue blood sprayed across Jin-Woo’s face. The Centipede thrashed in agony, its massive body coiling and slamming against the ceiling. Jin-Woo didn't let go. He twisted the blade, dragging it down the length of the creature's belly as it fell.
The massive weight of the Boss crashed onto the tracks, shaking the entire station. A final, gurgling hiss escaped its throat, and then it went still.

Jin-Woo slumped against the dead monster, his chest heaving. The adrenaline was fading, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity. He looked at his hands; they were steady.
Among the shimmering piles of ash where the Boss's spirit was dissipating, a golden light caught his eye. He reached into the remains and pulled out a sleek, black gauntlet that pulsed with a faint heartbeat.

He slid the gauntlet onto his right hand. It shrunk to fit his wrist perfectly, humming against his skin.
"Seven levels in one night," he muttered, looking up at the blue barrier, which was finally dissolving. The mundane world of Neo-Seoul was waiting for him on the other side.
He wasn't the weak Scavenger who had entered this tunnel. He was something new. Something the Grid hadn't accounted for.
