Chapter Twenty-SevenWatters did not hesitate but took to his heels at once. He knew by the rough tones that it was one of the servants who had seen him, probably the gardener as he was outside. Without checking the direction, Watters scrambled into the shrubbery opposite the house and, forgetting his recent concerns about his shoes, took another half dozen steps before stopping. Sheltering behind the bole of a tree, he slid to the ground and rolled under a spreading rhododendron bush. Watters knew that any searcher was unlikely to look downward and would believe his quarry would run as fast as possible.
