"This is our new transfer student," Wendy Carter said, smiling. "Let's give her a warm welcome."
"Hey, everyone. I'm Alice. Hope we can all get along."
The room broke into applause, loud and eager.
Standing up front was Alice Gardner. Zane Warren's first love. The one he wanted and never got.
I snapped back to myself, my chest caving in like someone had grabbed my heart and squeezed.
I forced my eyes up to look at her. Soft eyes, lips pink without any help from makeup, that whole sweet, harmless look that made people want to look out for her.
And this was the girl who had Zane wrapped around her finger.
The one who tore my whole life apart.
I turned my head and looked at Zane, sitting next to me.
"Figure this makes us even, for you running to my mom back then."
That cold, flat voice cut through my head out of nowhere. I flinched.
The memories hit me all at once, cold and sharp, like ice water down my back.
"Ms. Carter," I said, keeping my voice even, "why don't you give Alice my seat? Zane can help her catch up."
Wendy nodded.
I forced myself to stay calm as I scooted my chair back.
I was by the window now. I reached over and slid it open.
I'd been given a second chance. I was back at the point where everything could still be undone.
I covered my face and broke down. The tears fell silent, dripping straight onto my textbook.
Had someone up there finally taken pity on me? Given me one more shot to rewrite this whole thing?
