Chapter 2

731 Words
"Eliza, you don't even look surprised to see me." Alice's sweet voice rang beside me. I looked up to find she had turned around and was looking at me with a bright smile. Zane was not sitting at his desk. "By the way, Eliza, I found something interesting when I visited your house last time." Alice leaned closer and teased me. "I read your diary. Eliza, do you like Zane?" My whole body froze. At seventeen, I had made two terrible mistakes. The first was falling in love with Zane and even marrying him like a fool. The second was exposing his relationship with Alice, which made him hate me for years. I remembered my baby, the child I carried for ten months. That tiny child was thrown into a pot of boiling oil by those men. The baby cried at first. Then, the cries slowly disappeared. My child was so small. The baby had not even had a sip of milk. I crawled across the floor with all my strength, screaming in pain. My baby must have suffered so much. Those men only laughed. They were as cruel as monsters. Zane arrived too late. He held me close and reported those men to the police. It should have ended there. It did not. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my baby looking at me from that pot. Those empty eyes were full of pain. Slowly, I started seeing babies everywhere. They crawled around the house with their umbilical cords still attached, leaving bloody marks wherever they went. "Who knows whose bastard that child was?" That day, I saw another umbilical cord. I had chased after it. Then, I heard Zane talking to someone on the phone. The world around me twisted. Blood-covered umbilical cords wrapped around my body. The pale baby faces. The sticky, greasy feeling. The endless hatred. I finally understood. Zane had hated me for ten years. He had gone insane. He destroyed me just to take revenge for what I did when I was seventeen. I remembered every hopeless moment from my past life. I clenched my fists and bit the inside of my mouth until I tasted blood. I swallowed it and looked at Alice coldly. "No. I don't like him. We are just classmates." Alice pouted. "Really? He is exactly my type. I'll make him fall for me." In my previous life, Alice had said the same thing. She never hid what she wanted. Alice was my neighbor. She looked sweet and innocent, but her true self was rebellious and wild. At her old school, she had dated almost every good-looking boy. She transferred here because she wanted to compete with me. Since we were kids, she had loved taking everything that belonged to me. Girls like Alice were the kind who easily made men want to win them over. Zane was no different. I remembered how I begged him to spare me. He only tortured me again and again. The whip struck my back. Pain spread through my body. Zane looked at me with a dark expression. "If you had not told my mom, Alice would not have been heartbroken. She would not have married someone else. She would not have died during childbirth. You don't even know whose child you were carrying. You don't deserve to talk about love." I did not understand. I had died after loving him for ten years. I loved the one who destroyed me. How dare Zane question my love? Anyone could doubt me, except Zane. Alice made her own choices. She was the one who got pregnant. The child was not mine. Her death had nothing to do with me. How could he blame me? Zane was the crazy and sick one. I stared at Alice. The taste of blood filled my mouth. I hated her so much that I wanted to tear her apart. Alice was a maniac too. She fought me for everything. She destroyed her own life, then put all the blame on me. I forced myself to smile and said, "Good. I wish you both a long and happy life. I hope you stay together forever and have a healthy baby boy." Alice stared at me in confusion. "What a strange thing to say." Maybe my expression was too frightening. For the first time, I saw fear flash across Alice's eyes.
