The days slowly passed.
Just like my previous life, Alice soon managed to win Zane over.
The two of them started a secret relationship.
The thrill of hiding it made them feel even closer. Like any young couple, they skipped class to watch movies, went to escape rooms for fun, and even got matching tattoos near their hearts.
They kissed on the Ferris wheel, holding each other close. They often stood by the fence outside the classroom.
They did not do anything obvious, but anyone who saw them could still tell they were more than just classmates.
Whenever I walked by, Alice would put on a smug smile and watch me closely.
Zane would look at me too. His eyes were cold. It was like I was a stranger.
Alice was showing everyone that he belonged to her.
"Hey, Eliza, you're here. Look, this is my boyfriend, Zane."
In my previous life, those words would have shattered me.
But then again, the sky is always calm before the storm.
It's only when the storm finally hits that everything comes apart.
Back then, I only stood there and said, "Oh."
I had loved him so deeply. Only then did I understand how painful love could be.
Now, I watched them coldly. I even found it a little funny.
I had no time to care about their drama. I was busy preparing for my art entrance exams.
In my past life, I gave up the piano I had played since I was a child because I wanted to attend the same college as Zane.
What was I thinking?
I started learning piano when I was three. I had even reached Grade 10.
I truly loved music, yet I threw it away for a man who did not deserve it.
Love had made me blind. I spent all my energy chasing after him. I let my own light fade away.
It was truly sad. Still, I could not blame my past self. I regretted it later.
The girl I was back then was simply lost. She could not see what was ahead. She could not see the way back either.
With memories from the future, I could not judge that innocent girl too harshly. It would not have been fair to her.
The music teacher found out I was preparing for the college exams, so she gave me the piano room key and told me to practice well.
I took leave and spent every day in that piano room.
Until one day, I heard Alice boasting to her friends. "Zane is such a boring bookworm. He doesn't know how to have fun at all. I just tease him a little, and he turns red. If he wasn't known as a top student, I would not even take him out."
Someone nearby laughed bitterly. "Come on. You really think he likes you? He is so amazing."
The people around Alice started laughing and teasing her.
Alice hated losing face. Her sweet expression changed as she tried to prove herself.
"He has a math competition this weekend. I can make him skip it. Just wait and see."
Then, Alice looked over. She saw me.
"Hey, Eliza. You are not going to report me, right?"
I looked at her proud expression and smiled. "Why would I report something this interesting? I want to see the result too."
I quietly hid the voice recorder in my hand.
Without my foolish feelings for Zane, I could finally think clearly.
They were both crazy, they were meant to be together.
I would stop interfering. I would let them make their own choices.
When the two of them finally turned against each other, I would give them a little push. This recording would be the spark that started everything.
Zane was not the only one who had changed.
I had changed too. This time, I would take back everything he had taken from me.
I would make him pay a hundred times over, a thousand times over.
