I am left staring at the spot where the rogue and the witch once were. Fear and sorrow fill me. Fear of what she meant when she said that I will pay. Sorrow for the rogue that I had killed. He had invaded our pack. He had initiated attacking me first. Yet, I couldn't stop thinking about the tears staining her face, the way she clutched her chest in pain, and the complete and utter pain shown on her face as she looked at the rogue. I was right in thinking that this was no ordinary rogue attack. Rogues don't usually have loved ones. Rogues don't usually have fated mates, especially ones that are witches.
I feel a hand on my shoulder and can tell that it is my father. I turn around to look at him- he looks afraid, an emotion that I am not used to seeing on my father.
"What do I do, Dad?', my voice shakes slightly.
"I don't know, son. I don't know."
We busy ourselves for the next few hours finishing up what was left of the rogue attack and trying to figure out what they were doing on our land. Our best guess is that they came here looking for food or resources. By now night has fallen and the moon is high in the sky, so we decide to turn back. My father and I start a slow walk back towards the packhouse in silence. Images of the woman and her mate keep flashing in my mind. What have I done? All I wanted to do was protect my pack and make my father proud.
As soon as I open the front door, Vienna has me in a huge hug. I wrap my arms around her and pull her in tight. I look around and see the worried faces of my family and Vienna's parents. Vienna slowly untangles herself from me, but I grab her hand and pull her close to me. Her calming presence the only thing that is keeping me grounded right now.
I start trying to explain what happened when a loud crack echos through the room and I am suddenly face to face with the witch from earlier. Vienna lets out a scream and I pull her close to me. The witch is glaring at me with wild eyes that then shift to Vienna.
"Oh, how lovely. Pretty boy here has a little girlfriend. Here I thought I would just kill you for what you've done, but now I have just had the most brilliant idea", she snarls at me. I pull Vienna behind me, shielding her. "As payment for killing my mate, I think it is only right that I take away something dear to you, don't you agree? But death- death, would be far too easy. No. Instead of killing this lovely little lady, I will condemn her to the same life of solitude that you have bestowed upon me. From this night on, she will teleport to a random location at the strike of midnight every single night. Forced to wander by day and by night, living a lonely life on the run"
"You can't do that!" I yell back at her.
"Oh, but I can. In fact, it's already done. Don't worry, it's only 11:59, so you get one last minute with her before she "poofs" out of here. Use it wisely", she says with one last creepy smile and then she is gone.
I hear a squeak from behind me and turn to Vienna. Tears stream down her face. Her parents rush to her and wrap their arms around her, they too are crying. I just stand there frozen in shock for a few seconds- precious, wasted seconds. f**k. I look at Vienna, nestled between her parents. She is still wearing a short sleeved shirt, jeans, and a pair of sneakers. I rip off the hoodie that I am currently wearing and shove it over her head. I pull her in for a hug, holding onto her for dear life. "I am so sor-", I start, but the next thing I know, I am holding onto nothing but air.
