Black trees stood all around me like pillars in the dark, the ground covered in dark red leaves making the ground look like pools of blood, nothing but trees in the distance and an eerie laugh. "So, you are here!" I turn my head from side to side trying to catch a glimpse of the shadowy figure running through the forest. It dashed quickly from tree to tree only leaving a glimpse of the man it was. A shadow in the night, not easy to keep an eye on as soon as he disappeared behind one tree he would pop out from behind another in another place all together.
Its him again the doctor on the pale horse. My heart racing, I know he's real now but what does that mean and why is he in my nightmares? I hear galloping from behind, I feel like I'm running in slow motion. Before I turn its already too late, he leans down and swoops me up with one arm and puts me in front of him on the horse. Hes so strong, I shiver with his touch; I can feel his hot breath on the back of my neck. "Who are you?" I ask nervously. I feel something for him, not that of a lover something deep though something I feel like I have to remember.
"Why did you come for me first? I wasn't done playing." he said sadistically. "I... didn't come for you first, I don't even know who you are." he chuckled "I am sickness, I am illness, I am the virus that spreads through the ages I am pestilence! And you my dear are not the warrior you once were."he whispered in my ear. Something inside me snapped like a twig, I think I actually herd a snap. I breathed deep, "Where are you taking me?" I asked with my voice quivering. "I am taking you to where you will die." I could hear the smile in his words. My stomach lurched, I leaned down and stroked the horse's mane, I knew it would be confused by this action as would his rider since they were one in the same. But how did I know that? I whispered silently in the horses ear. Brother, a dream with in a dream. I was riding a white horse, laughing, I leaned down and whispered into the horses ear. "run star, he'll never catch us were like the wind." the horse neighed and sped up faster than humanly possible. I giggled and pet her mane, suddenly a black blur came around a big oak and cut us off. Star slowed down and huffed, the boy on the horse jumped off his black beauty, landing gracefully on his feet. I smiled, "Listen here you turd don't sneak up on star again she doesn't like it." his smile grew wider "You just don't like getting beat." I smiled and slid off star, she bent over and started eating the grass along side his horse. Little did he know he hadn't won yet. I took off in a sprint, heading towards the pillar standing in the center of the field. "You haven't won yet looser." I yelled i could hear him chuckling behind me. Just before i got to the pillar strong arms grabbed my waist. He turned his body and put his palm on the pillar. "I will always be faster." he whispered in my ear. I turned to face him "Pfft, maybe you will always be faster but I will always be smarter." He looked at me confused and i smirked glancing down at the foot I had placed at the bottom of the pillar before he had snuck up on me. he chuckled "You sly little devil." I covered my mouth in shock "You. Did. Not." he laughed and ran towards the horses with me hot on his heels. I jumped into the air with all my force and landed on his back, knocking him to the ground. he huffed and giggled as i tickled him. "Stop. stop, stop." he said through the giggles. I sat up on him with my arms resting on my knees. He rolled over making me fall to the ground and laughed. "Will it always be like this?" I asked "It better be."
A tear came to my eye and rolled down my cheek, he was so happy and carefree. His eyes lit with mischief and contentment. What could have happened to make us this way now? I loved him with all my heart. I still do.
The horse slowed down liking what I was doing, I sat taller reaching back stroking the doctor's hair. I could feel his barriers breaking. He heart was thumping against my back. "What is this game your playing?" he shouted while jerking the horse to a halt and grabbing my arm away from his hair. "you remember when we used to sit by the pond and I would play with your hair, how you loved it. This is no game doctor, if your going to kill me, I just want to you to remember what I meant to you. If you kill me in this dream, it is a dream, right?" he nodded "If you kill me here is it permanent?" how did I know those things? I stared straight ahead and the sun setting beyond the trees, I took his hand and placed in on my neck gently, he could snap my neck right now and it would be done. I let go of the deep breath I had been holding. His hand gripped a little tighter but faltered.
"Your soul will be dead yes. Why do you not seem to care if you die girl?" I sighed "I'm tired, tired of fighting, tired of the sleeplessness and tired of not knowing what's going on. Just tired brother..." He jumped off the horse and held his hand out for me to take it was ghostly and pale, there was still nothing but forest and blood leaves all over the ground.
I took his hand knowing I couldn't escape on his horse at least on my feet I had somewhat of a chance. Would I run if I had the chance? This whole this was confusing.
His form changed from the ghostly figure with no face to the doctor, the man I seen in the cafe. "Why do you want to kill me?" I asked "It is you that will kill me if I do not get to you first."
I laughed "Why would I kill you? I get that I wish death on the people who are invading my dreams and keeping me up at night but I don't think I would actually kill you." He smiled sadly "It is our fate." That word again "Interesting word fate is isn't it? Could we change our fate if we wanted to? I think we could. Well where are we going?" his hand felt comfortable in mine, like it had been there many times before. It was loving and brotherly, warm, I kinda felt safe with his had in mine. He's going to kill me and I feel safe, I was completely nuts.
He pointed to a ridge that was not there seconds ago. "there." I walked over and started to climb, when we go to the top the sun was just starting to rise over the trees in the distance, where I could swear it had just been setting moments ago. "So beautiful." I said he walked up behind me; I could hear him coming. I knew this would be the end, the end of days the end of my nightmares the end of life as I knew it. I welcomed the thought.
This was my reality
Apparently, my body was not as accepting as my mind because as soon as he got close enough my body automatically did a small side step he plunged the dagger into my shoulder instead of my heart. My heart ached a little at the thought he would kill me, another traitorous tear escaped and ran down my cheek.
My brain snapped like it did in the motel a day before my I could feel my eyes burning, the rage in my belly intensified and took over. "I gave you the chance, we didn't have to go down this road. You were my best friend, my brother, I love you." he looked at me shocked. I reached around and pulled the dagger from my shoulder slowly never taking my eyes from the man that sunk it in my back. I smiled "Now I have the weapon."
