The year was 1958.
The village was smaller then, quieter, untouched by the noise of the modern world.
Seventeen-year-old Adunni balanced a basket of tomatoes on her head as she hurried toward the market.
She was known throughout the village for her kindness, quick wit, and bright smile.
What she didn’t know was that someone had been watching her for weeks.
Daniel.
The blacksmith’s son.
Every morning, he found an excuse to pass by the market just to catch a glimpse of her.
Every morning, he lost the courage to speak.
Until one hot afternoon.
Adunni was resting beneath the large mango tree outside the village when a mango suddenly fell from a branch above.
Startled, she jumped to her feet.
A young man rushed forward.
“Are you hurt?”
Adunni turned.
Standing before her was Daniel.
Tall, nervous, and covered with traces of soot from his father’s workshop.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Adunni laughed.
A soft, beautiful laugh that made Daniel forget every word he had planned to say.
“It was only a mango,” she said.
Daniel scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.
“I know. I just wanted an excuse to talk to you.”
The moment the words escaped his mouth, he wished he could take them back.
But Adunni only smiled.
And for the first time, Daniel smiled too.
They sat beneath the tree talking for hours.
About their dreams.
About their families.
About the places they hoped to see one day.
As the sun began to set, Adunni realized she had never laughed so much in her life.
Neither of them wanted the conversation to end.
“Will I see you again?” Daniel asked quietly.
Adunni pretended to think about it.
Then she pointed to the mango tree.
“I come here often.”
Daniel grinned.
“I’ll remember that.”
As she walked home, Adunni couldn’t stop smiling.
And beneath the mango tree, Daniel watched her disappear down the dusty road.
Neither knew it then.
But that simple meeting would change both their lives forever.
