The heavy oak doors swung inward, scraping against the marble floor with the sound of a dying breath.
Inquisitor Vane didn't walk; he glided. He wore a tailored suit the color of dried blood, a silver-tipped cane resting casually in the crook of his arm. Behind him slinked the Hounds.
They weren't dogs. They were genetic nightmares engineered in the Council’s underground labs. Pale, hairless monstrosities with translucent skin, elongated snouts, and no eyes. Their olfactory receptors twitched violently, parsing the air for the metallic tang of deceit. Saliva dripped from their needle-teeth, sizzling faintly as it hit the stone floor.
Elena’s lungs seized. The phantom smell of burning flesh and roasting fur flooded her sinuses. Her wolf whimpered, curling into a tight, terrified ball at the base of her spine. The cortisol spiked in her blood, a glaring, neon beacon for the blind monsters.
Cilian moved.
He didn't step back to defend her. He stepped into her space. His large hand shot out, wrapping around the nape of her neck—not choking, but claiming—and he slammed her backward against the edge of the heavy mahogany table. The breath left her in a sharp, ragged gasp as his body caged hers.
"Play along," he breathed against her lips, a fraction of a second before his mouth crashed down on hers.
It wasn't a kiss. It was a tactical deployment. His tongue swept into her mouth, tasting of black coffee, ozone, and dark intent. His other hand gripped her hip, his long fingers digging brutally into the silk of her dress, pulling her flush against his hard, unyielding frame.
The Mate Bond detonated.
A blinding, white-hot shockwave of pure, unadulterated lust obliterated the terror in her veins. Her brain short-circuited. The phantom fires of Blackwood vanished, violently replaced by the scorching, suffocating heat of Cilian’s skin. The friction between her psychological trauma and the Bond’s intoxicating biological demand was tearing her nervous system apart. She tried to push him away, to fight the magnetic pull, but her hands betrayed her. Her fingers curled into his dark hair, pulling him closer, anchoring herself to the physical reality of his touch. A ragged, involuntary moan tore from her throat, echoing in the cavernous room.
The Hounds clicked their claws on the marble, rushing forward to sniff the spike of fear. But they hit a biological wall. Crushed pine. Ozone. Raw, unfiltered claiming. The monsters whined, confused and overwhelmed by the suffocating scent of mating, and backed away, pawing at their snouts.
Cilian broke the kiss, leaving her lips bruised, swollen, and slick. He kept his face buried in the crook of her neck, his teeth grazing her frantic pulse point as he addressed the room.
"You always had terrible timing, Vane," Cilian said. His voice was a low, gravelly rasp that vibrated straight through Elena’s chest and down to her toes. "I was just about to show my bride the structural integrity of the dining table."
Vane stopped ten feet away. He tapped his silver cane against the floor. *Click. Click.*
"Interrupting the honeymoon, Alpha? My deepest apologies," Vane purred. His pale, calculating eyes swept over Elena’s flushed skin, her heaving chest, and the possessive, bruising grip Cilian maintained on her waist. "Though I must say, the Council was deeply concerned your... political union lacked passion. I see those fears were entirely unfounded."
Elena forced her eyes open. The room was spinning. Her heart was hammering a frantic, bird-like rhythm against her ribs, threatening to crack the bone. She needed to speak. She needed to prove she wasn't a hostage.
"He's just..." Elena swallowed hard, her voice trembling before she forced a dark, mocking smirk onto her face. She tasted copper. "...overly enthusiastic. I was trying to negotiate a peace treaty over breakfast, and he decided to negotiate with his teeth."
Vane chuckled, a dry, papery sound that made the hairs on Elena's arms stand up. "A true Alpha never negotiates, my dear. He conquers."
Vane gestured lazily with his cane. The three Hounds crept closer, their eyeless faces inches from Elena’s bare arms. They inhaled deeply, their snouts twitching, sucking in the air. Searching for the sour, acidic sting of cortisol. Searching for the lie.
Elena held her breath. She focused entirely on the burning pressure of Cilian’s thumb stroking her hip bone, using the pain to keep the panic attack from dragging her under.
"Fascinating," Vane murmured, stepping into her personal space. The scent of lavender and formaldehyde rolled off him, making Elena’s stomach churn. "The pheromones are exquisite. Thick. Primal. You’ve practically marinated her in your scent, Cilian. A very convincing display of domestic bliss."
"I told you," Cilian said, finally lifting his head. His eyes were entirely black, the pupils blown wide, swallowing the gray, but his voice remained deadpan, utterly devoid of emotion. "I take my marital duties very seriously. The paperwork alone requires a certain level of enthusiasm."
"Indeed." Vane stopped right in front of them. He reached out with a black-gloved hand and gently tilted Elena’s chin up.
Cilian’s jaw locked. A low, subsonic growl vibrated in his chest, a sound that rattled the silver cutlery on the table, but he didn't strike. Not yet.
"But there is a fatal flaw in your brilliant little performance, Alpha," Vane whispered, his leather-clad thumb brushing over the frantic, fluttering pulse at Elena’s throat.
Elena’s blood turned to absolute ice.
"The Mate Bond is a biological tether," Vane continued, his voice dropping to a lethal, conversational hum that commanded the room. "When an Alpha truly claims his mate, their autonomic nervous systems synchronize. Their heart rates align in perfect, rhythmic harmony."
Vane pulled a heavy silver pocket watch from his vest. He clicked it open. The ticking sounded like a countdown.
"Your heart, Cilian, is beating at a calm, resting forty-five beats per minute. The heart of a predator in total, absolute control." Vane’s pale eyes snapped to Elena, cold, merciless, and triumphant. "But her heart... her heart is beating at a hundred and sixty. She isn't in heat, Alpha. She is in the middle of a severe, unmedicated psychological terror response."
The silence in the room shattered into a million jagged pieces.
Vane snapped the watch shut and took a deliberate step back, raising his cane.
"The treaty is a fraud. She is a hostage, and you are harboring a broken wolf." Vane’s lips curled into a cruel, bloodless smile. "Hounds. Tear her apart."
The pale monsters shrieked, a sound like tearing metal, and launched themselves through the air, their jaws unhinging to snap straight for Elena’s throat.
Cilian didn't reach for his gun. He didn't shout a tactical command.
His human facade simply evaporated. A monstrous, guttural roar ripped from his chest, shaking the crystal chandeliers above, as his jaw unhinged and he threw himself directly into the path of the flying beasts.
