Chapter Four

1086 Words
The word "Hounds" didn't just hang in the air; it sucked the oxygen straight out of the room. Silas stood in the doorway, his knuckles bone-white around the hilt of his sword. Cilian didn’t flinch. He didn’t even look at his Beta. His pitch-black eyes remained locked on Elena’s trembling mouth for one agonizing second before he slowly pushed himself off her chair. The shift in his demeanor was instantaneous. The predatory mate vanished, replaced seamlessly by the ruthless military commander. "How many?" Cilian asked. His voice was back to its usual glacial baseline. "Three," Silas rasped, his gaze darting nervously toward Elena. "And Inquisitor Vane. They bypassed the outer checkpoint. They’re already in the foyer." Elena’s stomach dropped into a bottomless ravine. Inquisitor Vane. The Sovereign Council’s chief executioner. A wolf who could smell a lie from three miles away and liked to peel the skin off liars while they were still breathing. Her remaining pack—the thirty starving wolves hiding in the east wing—were entirely at his mercy. "Vane," Cilian mused, casually adjusting the cuffs of his dark shirt. "He always did have a flair for the dramatic. Punctuality is his favorite parlor trick." "He’s here to verify the Bond," Elena said, her voice tight, the words scraping against her dry throat. Her mind raced, calculating the structural weak points of the dining room windows. "If he smells my fear, or if he realizes this treaty is a hostage situation, he’ll slaughter my people." Cilian finally turned to her. "He won't." "You can't guarantee that. Your aconite tolerance doesn't make you a mind reader, Cilian." "I don't need to read his mind. I just need to manipulate his olfactory senses." Cilian closed the distance between them in two measured strides. "Hounds track cortisol. Adrenaline. Fear. Right now, you smell like a cornered rabbit doused in gasoline. If Vane catches a whiff of your trauma, we are both dead, and your pack will be mounted on the Council walls by sunset." "Then let me go," Elena shot back, stepping away. Her back hit the cold mahogany sideboard. "Let me hide in the vault." "There is no hiding from a Hound, Elena." Cilian stepped into her space, caging her against the polished wood. The heat radiating off his chest was a physical wall. "There is only overriding the scent." "Override it with what?" "Lust." Elena stared at him, searching for the punchline. There was none. His face was a mask of cold, tactical necessity. He wasn't looking at her like a woman; he was looking at her like a biological weapon that needed to be deployed. Elena’s breath hitched. A dry, useless sound. "Excuse me?" "Mating pheromones mask stress hormones. It’s basic biology." Cilian’s gaze dropped to the frantic pulse beating at the base of her throat. "If you smell like you’ve just been thoroughly claimed, Vane won’t look for the fear. He’ll just assume I’m an Alpha who lacks impulse control around his new bride." "I would rather jump out that window." "The glass is bulletproof, and the drop is two hundred feet onto jagged rocks. You’d just shatter your femurs, and I’d have to carry you." Cilian reached out. His knuckles brushed the sensitive skin just below her ear. A violent jolt of electricity arced down her spine. Her knees actually buckled, a microscopic dip that Cilian instantly caught by gripping her waist. His large hand splayed across her lower back, pulling her flush against his hard abdomen. The impact knocked the air from her lungs. The Mate Bond roared, a deafening siren in her blood, demanding she sink her teeth into his shoulder. The scent of crushed pine and ozone flooded her sinuses, thick and intoxicating, warring violently with the phantom smell of ash in her memory. Her vision blurred at the edges, the panic attack trying to claw its way up her throat. The phantom heat of the Blackwood fires licked at her skin, but Cilian’s body was a furnace of a completely different kind. The friction between her terror and the Bond’s intoxicating demand was tearing her nervous system apart. "Stop," she gasped, her fingers digging into the lapels of his suit jacket. She meant to push him away, but her hands betrayed her, curling into the dark fabric to anchor herself against the spinning room. "I can't," Cilian murmured, his face dipping closer. His lips brushed the shell of her ear, sending a cascade of shivers straight to her core. "Your heart is beating so fast it’s going to give us away. I need to spike your dopamine levels. Now." "If you touch me, I will bite your tongue off." "Promises, promises," he whispered against her skin. Heavy, synchronized footsteps echoed from the marble hallway outside. The click of military-grade boots. The low, guttural sniffs of the Hounds filtered under the door crack. They were right outside. She could hear the wet sound of their olfactory receptors working, parsing the air for deceit, for weakness, for the metallic tang of an unbonded, terrified wolf. Cilian’s hand slid from her waist, his fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of her neck. He tilted her head back, exposing the long, vulnerable line of her throat. His thumb pressed hard against her racing carotid artery. "Look at me," he commanded, his voice a dark, velvet rasp that bypassed her brain and spoke directly to her wolf. Elena forced her eyes open. His irises were entirely black, swirling with a terrifying mix of predatory hunger and tactical calculation. "When Vane walks in," Cilian said, his mouth hovering a millimeter over her mating gland, his breath hot against her skin, "you are going to wrap your arms around my neck, and you are going to beg me to take you upstairs." The heavy brass handle of the dining room door began to turn. Elena’s lips parted in horror. "I won't." "You are a monster," she whispered, the words vibrating against his collarbone. "I am a survivor," Cilian corrected smoothly, his thumb stroking the frantic beat of her pulse. "And starting right now, so are you. The Council doesn't reward victims, Elena. They mount their heads on pikes." Cilian’s teeth grazed her pulse point, a ghost of a bite that sent a blinding shockwave of pure heat straight to her core. "Yes, you will," he breathed, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "Because if you don't, I'll snap your neck myself before Vane gets the chance." The door swung open.
