CHAPTER TWO

21st of April 2013. Five days to the explosion. The “wave land” was well know and recognized for the activities that takes place there. Activities ranging from hacking of any sort, theft and sales of stolen goods and properties, k********g, murder and most recently, jungle justice. People who go there are classified and referred to as either ‘civilian’ or ‘military’. The civilians are commonly referred to as outsiders whose visits to the wave land are mostly short and precise because roaming about aimlessly for a ‘civilian’ is risky. The ‘Military’ on the other hand are also referred to as the ‘dwellers’. They are the guys that run the place. The wave land has an ironically strange rule for a place where stolen things are sold ‘no stealing’. The gravity of this rule was displayed when an ‘outsider’ was burnt alive for attempting to steal from the ‘military’. The wave land is similar to the ‘wasteland’ in the movie “death race: beyond anarchy” only, it had the support of some corrupt government officials and was partially funded by them.             Sam, a 19 year old boy who was almost addicted to football games, was to meet someone he met online who could supposedly help him out with the football game application real football 2014 he was building in the wave land by 10:00Am. He had told his brother Jacob about the meeting the previous day and worked almost all night in preparation for his meeting with ‘Rick’ at 10:00Am the next day Jacob was 9 years old. It was 9:44Am when Jacob entered his brother’s room and behold he was sleeping as though he was the president of the United Nations. “Did you not say you were meeting someone today at 10:00am?” Jacob said after taping him. “Oh no! Sam exclaimed and jumped out of his bed desperately looking for his wrist watch to see what time it was. After quite a long search, he found it and this time, he shouted after looking at it. 9:46Am. “You could have just asked me what time it was instead of giving yourself a heart attack” Jacob mocked him. Sam pretended not to have heard or even seen his brother as he hurriedly got his laptop into a black leather bag and everything he needed for the meeting. He rushed and brushed his teeth and when he stepped out, he saw the taxi he had arranged and having forgot about the arrangement, he could not be more grateful for his creativity.             When Sam finally got to the wave land, it was 11:27Am. So much for the first impression he was looking forward to making and sadly enough, of all days the taxi driver had chosen that very day to forget his driver’s licence. Sam and his driver were pulled over moments after they left his house by a police officer who had given a slight chase shortly after Sam advised the driver to beat the traffic when the light was still very red. The driver saw this as an invitation of trouble and beckoned on Sam to be patient but Sam was too much in a hurry and he was already behind the time for his scheduled meeting with someone he had never met and in a place he had never stepped foot.             “Good morning gentlemen” the police office said in a friendly tone. “Can I see your driver’s licence?” “Of course” Sam’s driver responded and started searching for his driver’s licence. When the officer saw that the licence was not forth coming, he asked the pair to step down from the vehicle. Sam was not sure of whom to direct his disappointment at or who was responsible for the mess they have gotten themselves into but he was certain of one thing and that was the fact that even if he had to flee the scene the police officer was gradually creating, he would do so and see Rick who would by now must be imagining him to be an unserious fellow unable to keep to time. After their ado with the police officer, they were allowed to go with Sam’s driver having provided every other document.             Sam entered the wave land and dialled Rick’s number but it was not connecting. He became confused and panic stricken as he looked around trying to find someone who fits the description that Rick had given him. The wave land is a spacious arena and it is never wanting of people by day or night. Sam was not aware of the kind of attention he had drawn to himself by walking alone and seeming lost. There was a rumour that went about some months ago about some police officers who were chasing a man in a stolen car. The car was steered at top speed into the wave land and when the police got there, it was as if their vehicles were the only ones to have ever been driven into the wave land. It was not quite long and people started shouting and throwing stones at them. The few shots the officers fired into the air seemed like a motivation for the wave landers and they had to retreat in haste. Sam was not sure how true the rumour was and as he thought of it, he heard a very deep voice few metres behind him. “You seem to be lost.” Sam jerked and turned but did well to maintain whatever composure he had left in him. “No I am not” he said trying to key in to what he had heard about the wave land that “fear would only get you killed.” Sam was well aware of how dangerous a place the wave land could be but someone was offering the kind of assistance with his rough file that could almost immediately set it up completely. I mean, it was worth the risk considering the many times he had tried on his own and failed spending every single penny that came his way. Now as he looked at the face of the stranger that revealed no feelings whatsoever who had startled him, he saw a perfect match of Rick’s description and at the same time remembered what his brother Jacob had told him earlier concerning the risk he was taking to meet someone at the wave land. “hey Sam,” his brother had said “what if your precious application was required of you at g*n point while you are at the wave land? I am sure you are going with it” and the response he gave “yes of course I am going with it and please stop having all these negative thoughts. I already told you I would be in and out of there before the bad guys get a chance to notice me” “everyone in the wave land is a bad guy Sam” Jacob yelled and now as he looked at the man in front of him, “everyone in the wave land is a bad guy” was the second thing that appealed to him after the matching description of Rick had vanished from his consciousness.             “Are you looking for someone?” the man asked Sam. “Yes I am” Sam replied “I was supposed to con...” “Wait! Did he not say where exactly you are to meet him?” the man said interrupting Sam and looked a bit surprised. “No he did not” Sam said “I was supposed to contact him when I got here but his line is not connecting.” The man looked around cautiously, walked closer to Sam and said in a whisper “In that case, I would not trust him if I were you” and he walked away replacing his hood as it were when Sam first saw him. Sam became all the more confused, scared and considered going back home to be perhaps the wisest choice he could make that day and as he started off, he heard someone yelling “Sam! Hey Sam” and when he turned, It was a boy who was most probably around the same age as he was, running towards him and smiling. When he caught up with Sam, he said while panting “leaving so soon are you.” “How do you know my name” Sam asked “come on it’s me Rick, the guy who is to help you with your football game application” Rick said looking puzzled. “Why was I unable to reach you when I got here as we arranged” Sam asked again forgetting the fact that he was the first to break their arrangement with his late arrival. “Look I am sorry okay” Rick said apologetically. He was also a teenager like Sam but had little features and a confident look. “Can we go now?” He asked. Apart from the warning he had received from his first contact in the wave land, Rick seemed very friendly and incapable of doing any harm so he consented and followed him deep into the wave land.
