At the bottom of the pit, in one corner, a faint gleam of gold caught Martin’s eye— something was buried there, with just a tiny piece showing through the dirt. “There’s something down there,” he told Wolfnine without hesitation. “Something? What is it?” Wolfnine asked quickly. Martin shook his head. “I’m not sure. I’ll have to check it out myself.” Before Wolfnine could reply, Martin jumped down into the pit. It wasn’t very deep— the top barely reached his neck— and since they had already dug much of the saltstone out, he had plenty of room to move. He strode toward the corner, crouched down, and peered closer. The golden glint came from a rounded object, part of it sticking out from the earth.
