Chapter 19: The Thin Line Between Trust and Betrayal

335 Words
Lena’s hands were cold as she tightened her grip on the steering wheel, her mind racing. Had Damien betrayed her? Ethan knowing about her plans wasn’t just a coincidence. It was a warning. Someone in her circle had leaked information, and Damien was the only one powerful enough to have access to every move she’d made. Her car screeched to a stop in front of Knight Enterprises. The towering glass building loomed over her, its sleek exterior a reflection of the man who owned it—cold, unreadable, untouchable. Lena stepped out, her heels clicking against the marble floors as she stormed past the receptionist. “I need to see Mr. Knight,” she said sharply. The receptionist barely had time to respond before Damien’s office doors swung open. “Let her in.” Lena inhaled deeply before stepping inside, the heavy doors clicking shut behind her. Damien stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his hands in his pockets, the city skyline stretching behind him. He turned, his sharp blue eyes locking onto hers. “You think I betrayed you,” he said, his tone unreadable. Lena folded her arms. “Tell me I’m wrong.” A flicker of something—amusement? Annoyance?—crossed his face. He walked toward her slowly, each step deliberate. “If I had betrayed you, Lena,” he murmured, “do you really think you’d still be standing?” She refused to flinch. “Ethan knows everything. My plans, my partnership with you. He even knew about Victoria’s backdoor deals.” Damien’s jaw tightened slightly. “And you think I handed that information to him?” “Did you?” Silence stretched between them. Then, Damien reached into his desk, pulling out a sleek folder. He tossed it onto the table. Lena hesitated before opening it. Her breath caught. Bank transactions. Leaked emails. Phone records. None of them pointed to Damien. But they pointed to someone else. Her stomach twisted as she read the final name on the list. Leo.
