Chapter 7: Enter Damien Knight

Victoria’s lips curled into a slow smile, but Lena could see the cracks forming. She’s trying to figure me out. “Change is good,” Victoria said smoothly, stirring her coffee. “But be careful, Lena. Some people don’t like when others step out of line.” Lena leaned back, unfazed. “Good thing I don’t care what people like anymore.” Victoria studied her, then laughed softly. “I almost didn’t recognize you.” Lena smirked. Good. A Dangerous Encounter After brunch, Lena returned to her office, the familiar view of the city stretching beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. Three years ago, she had trusted Ethan to guide her in business. She had let him make decisions for her, believing he had her best interests at heart. What a fool she had been. Not this time. She pulled up financial reports, scanning the numbers carefully. Something had always felt off about Ethan’s involvement in her company. Before her rebirth, she had ignored the signs. Now, she would find the truth. As she clicked through old transactions, a shadow flickered outside her glass office door. Her breath hitched. Someone was watching her. Slowly, she turned her head. The office lights reflected against the glass, distorting the figure standing just outside. But as the door swung open, the distortion disappeared. A man stepped inside, his presence immediately commanding. Dark eyes. Sharp jawline. A tailored black suit that fit him with effortless precision. Damien Knight. Lena’s pulse spiked. What the hell is he doing here? Damien Knight wasn’t just any businessman. He was a kingmaker—a ruthless investor known for turning struggling businesses into empires… or crushing them completely. People didn’t seek out Damien. He sought out people. And when he did, it was never without reason. Lena kept her expression neutral, masking her surprise. “Mr. Knight. To what do I owe this visit?” Damien stepped further inside, his gaze sweeping across her office before settling on her. His lips curved into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “You’re making enemies, Miss Carter.” Lena held his gaze, refusing to flinch. “Is that a warning?” Damien tilted his head slightly, as if assessing her. “The question is… do you know what you’re doing?” Lena smirked, leaning back in her chair. “Why don’t you tell me?”
