Chapter 4: The First Move

222 Words
Lena sat on the edge of her bed, her pulse hammering. The morning light spilled across her penthouse, illuminating everything she once lost—her expensive furniture, her designer dresses hanging neatly in her closet, the sapphire pendant resting against her skin. This isn't a dream. I’m really back. She forced herself to think. She had three years of memories the world didn’t yet know had happened. Three years of pain, betrayal, and mistakes. And now, she had the chance to change everything. Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. Ethan Blackwood. For a split second, her stomach clenched. In the past, I would have answered immediately. Eager. Hopeful. Not this time. She let the phone ring twice before picking up, her voice perfectly composed. “Ethan?” “Lena.” His voice held its usual charm, smooth and practiced. “I need to see you tonight. There’s something important I want to ask you.” Lena curled her fingers into her sheets. She knew exactly what he was going to ask—he was about to convince her to give up her career, to dedicate herself to him. The first step in making her completely dependent on him. But this time? She wouldn’t fall for it. Lena smirked. "I’ll think about it." Then she hung up before he could say another word.
