Katherine’s awed emotion caused the phoenix to take a momentary pause from its would-be attack, to inform her, [Nobody can harm you, I will protect-]
And Kat being who she is interrupted, “Even Oscar?”
An echo inside her head with the words of denial, [Oscar will not harm me.]
“But if he does, will you protect me?”
Another surge of echoes sounded inside her mind before another trail of denial follows. Frustrated, she says, “Leave my people alone. I will not m*rder someone else- let alone a room full of people just to protect myself from harm!”
[Your Majesty- it is a must!]
It is not surprising to Katherine the bird used her title by marriage and Kat felt the disappointment, her heart sinking. Nodding her head, she walks back to the tub, which she now learned was useless, and unplugs it, wrapping herself in a robe.
[If it means you are harmed, we must take out-]
“Would you shut up? How are they at fault?”
[My queen, everyone who harms you is at fa-]
“Really? So, servants doing their duty by their king, is harming me? Not the actual person who takes my life?” Katherine shouts and sits on top of the rim of the tub, her hands resting on her thighs, head bent.
Suddenly feeling cold, she shudders and in the next second, she is crisp and toasty. She wonders how her flesh wasn’t harmed and how she remained soaked even though she was on fire earlier but dry now, ignoring the feeling running throughout her veins.
[I can control my fire. See I started weak, orange-red and now I am blue- see? Stronger.]
Kat was in no mood for a lesson in flames.
[Katherine, you are right. I think if the king attempts to harm you then I will have to defend- although I wish I don’t.]
A sudden sorrow washes inside her and her head raises up and looks into the mirror. Kat looks at her eyes as she feels this is where she is looking at the beast. The blue flames looking back at her.
[You are right. If Oscar harms you- I am sorrowful but I am learning every day.]What is accepted in my life before is possibly not now. I know the rules alter with each lifespan I undergo.]
A feeling of disheartenment flows inside her again and Kat’s eyebrows furrow but she still stays silent, her thoughts jumbled. With each lifespan?
[I am ancient yet I am new-borne, I have much to learn, you have much to teach me, yes?]
‘Leave the servants alone.’
[Hmp, if you insist. But I cannot guarantee that I will allow anyone else-]
“If your mate, tries to harm me?”
[It breaks my heart, my mate will not- the Gods will not allow it but I will be hurting myself.]
‘What does that even mean?’
[I will protect you, even if it feels wrong to hurt my mate.]
The words exploded in her heart but still, Kat had to say it, “Oscar is powerful, he will defeat you.”
[It breaks my heart to even think this but if I must protect you, from harm by him I will.]
Then Kat was engulfed in a spiral of massive blue flames and a loud screech escaped her mouth, [Oscar is powerful but not as much as me. He needs me by his side to fulfill our destiny.]
Nothing was heard by Kat after ‘I will.’ And just like that, her mood became light and a smile spread its way across her face. She bent down and picked up the ice bags, throwing them inside the tub noisily, to prevent the watery mess the maids will have to clean.
‘Do you have a name?’
[Uh- no. That is for you to decide.]
‘Me?’
[Yes, well. I am in you, it only seems fitting.]
‘Ooh fancy with your words huh.’
[Choose a name he will like- one that suits him.]
Kat thinks of the devil she got married to and smiles. She hears the almost silent steps of when the maids leave but she did not care if they ran to tell on her. She has- “Lilith.”
[Lilith- I like it. She was a force.]
Kat had a moment of shame but the phoenix assures her, [Not even God himself could have tame her. Lilith is my creator, so I take it.]
“Sh*t, I’m sorry-”
[Our husband is not a devil. Just as Lilith wasn’t the evil spawn people make her out to believe.]
Okay, three things; our husband, not the devil, Lilith wasn’t evil.
Kat believed in the bible and Lilith is bad news everywhere. Oscar is evil and somehow ‘our husband’ had a nice sound to it. Husband. She propped the pillows and laid her head on one and her arm on the one to her side, pulling the thick blanket over herself, eyes closed.
[You go back to your incorrect thinking,] Lilith accused. [Our husband is not evil. He is hurt- I can sense his pain and I want to comfort him but you are preventing me from doing so. Why?]
Walking out of the bathroom she climbed into bed towel drying her long hair. She cherished moments like this when she was left alone to be herself. “He has done nothing good for me or to me. You know this, you can feel me. Thank you for saying you will protect me.”
[I feel you resisting me and him. You must not. You were born here, your destiny is here with us, with him.]
“Him? No- that is you. Just leave me alone. Get out of me and into somebody else and be with the bloodsucker king. Leave, I need sleep,” Kat yawned out, eyes still closed, after all, the voice is inside her head and not in front of her. Her mind and body are exhausted from what she has just undergone.
“I cannot. You and I are destined to be one and so we are. We are to be one with him, you have to accept it…see I know you feel it.]
Lilith had picked up on how her heart fluttered when she mentioned ‘be one with him’ and Kat had a flash memory of just how ‘one’ she had wanted to be with him. But she shook her head and denied it to the firebird, it was her not Kat, who felt these things.
[Soon we shall think the same, Katherine and you will submit to him.]
Kat did not like it one bit. First, yes, she did fear that she would indeed give in if the creature inside her gains full power and two, Kat did not like the word submit. She did not want to want Oscar. But that is a battle for another day, her last thought as unconscious took her.
