He stared at the couple unsure of how to feel. His royal guard- his best friend had his hands around his wife’s hip and face, cupping them both. He could tell they’d been kissing by the swollen lips of Katherine, a sight so familiar to him as he’s done it dozens of times himself. His wife was kissing his best friend and the guards outside the door knew, he could tell by the way they won’t meet his eyes, looking away when he neared.
Walking in just two footsteps inside he understood just why.
Is this why Nuwa tried to stop his approach just now down the hallway? Where is Ju anyway. Why would Anthony call him about the phoenix and then kiss the queen? Does he want to be seen and found in this position? That was not very Anthony-like, so Oscar doubted it was that particular reason.
Turning around he went back to his quarters, finding Eric still there where he’s left him. “The phoenix is here, get Ju now!”
“The phoenix? Oh man, Ju said Anthony is a vamp,” he stood up, cracking his knuckles, one after the other, making Oscar almost cringe. The sound always made him uneasy and as kids, his friend did it to spook him out.
Yeah, that was also something he was supposed to also inform Eric about during this meeting Oscar did not understand why Eric had been so terrified about the hybrids and had even tried to caution him about it when he was okay with him being a vampire. It's not like Oscar was the lone vampire in the world and Eric knew he had powerful enemies- inhuman ones that would destroy his kingdom at any given moment at any sign of weakness. Hence his knighted hybrids.
"Why is that mage taking so long to get here?" Oscar finished the discussion with, glancing down at his slim wrist that was adorned with a plain but exquisitely made watch.
"Ju! She had said something about the-"
“I don’t care for what she’s doing now, tell her cancel them and get here!” he interrupted his friend.
“I’m trying but she isn’t picking up. Look Oscar, she was so scared earlier maybe vamp Anthony was a bit too much for her to handle?”
“Ju said that? She was the one that made it happen, both Yeon and him. I was waiting to tell you, which is what I was supposed to do today after our meeting, sure you don’t want a vamp seat?” Oscar cringed at the use of ‘vamp’ but he only did so to playfully mock him. He needs Eric on his team, a better version of a human. Knowing he’ll be safer, stronger, better, sat better on Oscar’s mind. He cared for the man and wanted the best for him and Oscar felt he was indeed offering him the best but Eric did not. Now with Yeon and Anthony marked as safe maybe he’ll change his mind, Oscar hoped.
“She knows? Then why-?”
“Get Ju, Eric!”
Eric got over his stupefied state and rushed out to find the mage.
Oscar needed her or else the guards that witnessed the queen’s infidelity, will be put to death. Gosh, why wasn’t he bothered by the sight of the two lovers? How long had it been going on anyway?
Hmm, it couldn’t be the phoenix as stated by Ju, for the bird wanted him. Katherine, it seemed wanted the guard. Wait- he frowned, taking the same position Eric had been in previously on the mattress. Where was the firebird? Come to think of it, Oscar doesn’t recall wanting Katherine for some time now which could only mean the bird had left. He sucked in a breath, impossible as it’s taken up its roots in her.
He hissed then- the phoenix! He couldn’t give Xu Kai Katherine without the firebird as Katherine is its host now. Chosen by the firebird itself. Fuucckk.
Oscar closed his eyes.
His vampiric body wasn’t reacting either to the scene that would have angered him, the very reason why his royal guard and friend was a hybrid at the moment. What in actual f*ck is happening? His home, his own castle with his guards and he had no idea what was going on. Had Ju betrayed him and the attack was internal already? Not wasting another second for more foolishness to enter his mind, Oscar raced across to the office of the mage- vampire speed.
He grabbed the woman by the throat as soon as he entered her door. She’d been packing bottles into a bag- why. Shrieking when his long fingers closed around his throat he waited for her explanation, his head twisting a bit to the side, his eyes zooming in on her pulsing throat. Peculiar indeed.
He disliked here especially with the knowledge of her little no legs floaty friend, around somewhere which Oscar was certain was staring at him with his beady eyes- or whatever ‘familiars’ used as eyes.
“My King, wait,” she managed to get out and Oscar loosened his hold on her but not enough for her to stand straight. Her shoulders remained slouched as he’s grabbed her mid-bend. “I think you’re under some sort of charm.”
Charm? Hmm, that would explain why he didn’t feel the urge to rip through her throat at the moment and he released her. Ju didn’t even bother with the normal reaction to rub her neck and instead turned and grabbed another bottle off the shelf.
“I think a pishogue is in your system, like-like the one I placed on you when you er- um- the queen,” she finished lamely.
Oscar’s forehead furrowed and his mind whirled with the truth behind her words. Yes, he believed her. After all those heated moments with Katherine and then nothing. His mage had sensed it first and knew something was off.
“Where’s Eric?”
“Eric?” she didn’t even look his way and continued on with mixing her potions in a beaker just as Eric burst in shouting, “Ju, it’s the king. Something is wro- Your Majesty?”
In cases like this, the king hated formalities and class prestige. Had Eric used the ‘royal’ lift, he would have gotten here earlier. Oscar will have to give the stamp of approval on that.
Oscar waved his hand in his direction and the man stooped over panting. It seemed he had run all the way over. Oscar didn’t understand why he just didn’t accept his offer to become a hybrid and rid himself of all these slow movements.
“I called you- answer next time,” Eric’s phone was still in his hand.
“Anthony- I- I saw him,” simultaneously the mage said as the beaker smoked up in a pink fog.
“What about him?” Eric goes on saying and Oscar walked over to the chair and sat down looking at them and a side-eyed glance to the side of him as if the no-legged short invisible creature could be seen.
“He was in the office,” Ju’s voice was small.
Eric walks over to the counter then. “He’s fully recovered? Out and about?” twisting his head side to side, to match with his last three words. The man drummed his fingers on the countertop, his gaze on the mage. It was so obvious t Oscar that Eric was in deep crush or love- whichever with the older woman who seem to be oblivious to his feelings.
“Eric, bring me a scoop from the cauldron in the back- now!”
Eric, rushed through the door at the back, no questions asked. They both knew when she was in this sort of concentration it is best to just go with it…and hurry.
I guess we both saw him then, Oscar was thinking until he figured out what she meant. Vampire Tony. Oscar didn’t understand why she seemed so shaken about it, being as she was the one that did the procedures with him and Yeon.
Shaking. Why was Ju terrified in his presence? He could hear her heartbeats giving competition to those on a racetrack. She was never afraid of him before- unless it’s…she’s terrified because of Anthony’s new modification?
But why? They had both studied and planned it before they proceeded with…his already cold heart went colder. His eyes widened then- no.
No-no. Could it be that it really wasn’t Ju and it was this- his eyes searched the room again. Could it be that Ju is possessed by that familiar right now?
