A scared girl ran through the thick bushes in the woods. She could hardly see anything in front of her due to the tears in her eyes. Luckily, the pale crescent moon drew a light path across the damp floor of the woods. She moved quickly, trying hard not to slip. She called out to her wolf but heard nothing. She was alone.
Well, not truly alone as she heard a set of footsteps gaining on her. She had to get away or at least try. For their sake. She thought about her friends at the lab. She wanted them to come with her, but they were scared. That woman made them scared, but she fought back.
She called out to her wolf again and heard a whimper. They had been through so much. So much torture. Her wolf was weak from healing her. Of course, she needed a moment to rest.
The girl could hear her kidnappers getting close as she slipped on a rock and fell down a hill. She was too weak to break her fall, so she did her best to shield herself from any damage. Her body hit the trunk of a tree, causing her to lose her breath.
She squeezed her eyes from the pain and nearly bit her lip to keep from crying out. They were close but they didn’t know where she was. She looked around for cover and found a rotting tree with a hole just big enough for her to hide. She snuggled in pretty tight just when one of her kidnappers came into view.
“Do you see her,” one of the men asked the other as they searched around the tree. She silently prayed they wouldn’t scent her wolf.
“No. All I smell is rot,” growled the other guy.
“Well, she couldn’t have gotten far. Shift, maybe we can get a better scent.”
She heard the breaking of bones and instantly she could see them transformed into werewolves. They scented the air and came close to the tree she was hiding in. She covered her mouth to keep from making even the smallest of sounds and calming her heart rate.
The werewolves craned their heads as if they were listening for something. She watched as they slowly approached the hole. She closed her eyes and willed herself to stay calm as she waited. She tried using her power, but her wolf was still weak. She knew they would eventually be able to smell her the longer they stayed around. She just knew it.
When she opened her eyes, she nearly fainted from the nose that was only a few inches from hers. She tried moving back as far as she could without making too much noise. The wolf pulled back until all she saw was the sky. She waited, thinking she would see a pair of hands reaching in to pull her out, but instead she saw a man’s face.
Her eyes went wide as he stared at her. She wondered why he didn’t grab her. She saw him look confused before the other guy came to look into the hole.
“I could’ve sworn I smelled her in here,” one said. “Almost like I could hear her heartbeat.”
“Well, I don’t see anything,” the other one said. “Maybe you need to go get your eyes checked. Let’s go.”
The other one disappeared while the first wolf continued to stare at her. He reached out a hand, getting closer to her face. He was about to touch her when a howl pierced the night. The man finally turned away and she finally relaxed her shoulders.
She heard the fleeing paws and waited a few more moments before moving out of the trunk. She looked around, making sure everyone was gone. She finally took a breath and was about to run when she felt a hand on her shoulder. A moment later, a bright light lit up the forest, she felt the familiar shock run through her body.
Her mouth opened to a quiet scream. Her body shook terribly before she fell to the ground. She was looking up at the sky as tears fell down the side of her face. She made out two figures emerging from the dark. One was a man. He looked concerned and a little scared. She remembered him from earlier. He was nice to her.
The other she couldn’t see but they held a crystal in their hand. It was glowing with bright light. The figure brought the crystal close enough for the girl to see red lipstick. The cloaked lady had a smile on her face.
“Lily, why did you run,” the cloaked lady asked sweetly while crouching down towards Lily’s face. “You know I only want to help.”
As soon as she got feeling back in her hand, Lily tried to swipe at the lady, but it was caught in midair by the man. She tried to pull away and suddenly she didn’t feel like fighting at all. She felt a calmness she hadn't felt in a long time. She slowly turned to look at him before she could, she heard him say…
“It’s going to be OK now, Lily. Just sleep.”
She didn’t want to sleep. She wanted to run but her eyes felt heavy, and she fell into darkness. Tears fell down her cheek as he lifted her into his arms.
“They’re getting bolder every day now,” the woman said. “We need to find that other crystal and the one who activated them.”
“I heard that someone was searching for white wolves. Maybe I can intercept and see what they know.”
“Hmph.” The woman went silent, looking at him. A part of her wanted him to do but another wanted to keep him close to her. Safe. The world wasn’t hospitable for her kind and she wasn’t willing to chance another love of hers losing their life.
“Fine, just make sure she can get the job done. The quicker we can get our hands on it, the happier he’ll be. Just…be careful and keep your distance.”
The man couldn’t contain his excitement. Leaving the pack to travel was a dream of his and this mission was important.
“Once we find what we need, will you mark us,” the man asked with hope in his eyes.
The woman caressed the side of his face. “Oh, I would do more than just mark you, my love. We will never have to worry about being safe ever again.”
The woman placed a chaste kiss on his lips before turning to walk through the trees. The man smiled, adjusting Lily in his arms and followed the woman.
“Time to go home.”
