Second-Lieutenant Morris stood, mesmerised, as Cole dismounted. “What has happened?” he asked, trailing his eyes over the horses laden down with their dreadful cargo. Bodies wrapped in white sheets or blankets. Cole merely shrugged.
“They ambushed us. Took out a lot of our boys. The Cap’n, he … Well, let’s just say he’s amongst those of us who lost.”
“But, his wife. She sent a cable telling us she’s coming. To join him.”
Taking in the young officer’s bewildered look, Cole swallowed down the tiny cry trying its level best to burst out of his mouth. What was he supposed to tell her?
