After hanging up, I realized my heart was aching with a dull, heavy throb.
Back in the day, I was just an intern doing grunt work at the radio station, never even getting a shot at stepping inside a real studio. Cassian braved massive pressure from his parents and the Sta. Barbara Media just to hand‑deliver every major resource in the industry to me.
At the Chamber of Commerce awards ceremony, he actually dialed into the station and confessed his love for me on air. That heartfelt, twenty‑five‑minute confession is still talked about as a legendary romance in the port city today.
Cassian gave me a fairy tale romance and a life of dignity. Right up until the night, a young girl accidentally called into the station to ask for advice about her relationship... with Cassian.
Hearing her list all those intimate, detailed descriptions, I realized exactly what was going on. I completely lost it, crying and screaming curses right into the microphone.
That was my first broadcast accident ever.
But to my surprise, Cassian didn't even care. He just stood in front of the Sta. Barbara media cameras, wrapping his arm around his new little lover while flashing a wicked smirk.
"My wife is an absolute expert at handling relationship drama. You guys should call her show for advice. Honestly, she knows my dating history better than anyone."
From that moment on, it practically became a tradition. Every single one of his side chicks grew bold enough to call in, provoking and insulting me with zero shame. The studio where I once chased my dreams felt like it transformed overnight into a cold, suffocating prison.
Still, I never expected that even though he knew about the deep, bitter blood feud between Jean and me, he would still choose her.
Years ago, his mother was so utterly enraged by this illegitimate daughter that she fell critically ill. His father spent every single day outside the ICU room, eaten alive by guilt. Back then, I hid in my bedroom, refusing to touch a single drop of water. Cassian would gently blow on warm creamy oatmeal to cool it down, tenderly spoon‑feed me himself.
"Phoebe, none of this drama is worth stressing yourself over. Leave everything to me."
I believed him, and that was how I lost everything.
Early the next morning, the station director suddenly demanded that I hand over my studio keys. The station manager couldn't even stand the sight of me anymore.
"Sure, you used to be the top DJ around here, but who knows what's going to happen to you next."
He flashed his phone screen, showing me a text thread. Cassian himself had ordered the hit.
Years ago, Cassian had proudly pressed that 'golden key' into my palm in front of a massive crowd. He was the one who gave me that honor, and now, he is taking it back with his own two hands.
Jean couldn't even figure out which buttons to press on the soundboard, yet she swaggered into the studio anyway for a test broadcast.
My colleagues immediately started whispering and gossiping.
"Seriously, everyone in Sta. Barbara treats Jean Carter’s show like a comedy routine, and she just sits there broadcasting it like she's thrilled. Is she a masochist or something?"
"I heard Mr. Sterling poured a ton of money and resources into Jean. Phoebe is officially sidelined from here on out."
"How did she even have the guts to bring up divorce on a live broadcast? It's honestly hilarious."
"When the year‑end reviews roll around, somebody is definitely getting fired. But hey, at least she's locking down the number‑one spot on the Cheated‑On leader board, haha."
Cassian even shared Jean’s pilot broadcast in real‑time. His public captions showed absolutely zero affection for me, only pride for her. He wanted to make it crystal clear to the entire world that without his backing, I couldn't even protect my own career.
Back in the day, if I mispronounced a single word on air, he would playfully bite my ear. Those sweet, loving days were officially dead and buried.
As I walked out of the building in total humiliation, Jean glared at me with her usual venomous hostility, sending a cold shiver down my spine.
I just didn't expect her to move so fast.
In the dead of night, the station chief called me, absolutely screaming with rage. "You were the one who just crank‑called Jean's live show, weren't you? I order you to get your ass back down to the station right now!"
