The moment I rushed into the building, Cassian marched right up to me and slapped me dead across the face.
"Phoebe, Jean only did a test broadcast for one night, and you're already this desperate to ruin her?!"
I was completely dazed, my head spinning. "What are you... What are you even talking about?"
The next second, the station director hit play on the broadcast recording.
"Jean, you're nothing but a pathetic illegitimate daughter, and you actually have the nerve to compete with me for a radio spot? Your mom is a total homewrecker who ruined our family, and you're just as shameless as she is!
"I'm going to let every single person in Sta. Barbara know exactly what kind of trash you are right now!"
My heart dropped straight into my stomach. I scrambled to explain myself, panicking. "I never said that! I didn't say any of those things!"
Right on cue, Jean dropped to her knees right in front of me, sobbing pitifully with her eyes swollen red.
"Phoebe, I had no idea you hated me this much. You wouldn't even let me have one simple trial broadcast. Years ago, your mother was the one who ruined my parents' marriage and forced her way ahead of them. I never hated you for it, and I never even tried to expose the truth. But how could you turn around and flip the script like this?"
Hearing her words, the crowd of onlookers gasped in shock.
"So Phoebe's mother was the actual homewrecker this whole time? Wow. She's been playing the innocent victim all along. Talk about sinister!"
"No wonder her mom is stuck in the hospital. A nasty woman like that honestly deserves it."
"So Phoebe is the real illegitimate daughter! How does she have the nerve to sabotage Jean's pilot broadcast? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!"
Countless insults and curses echoed all around me. With just a few twisted words, they completely dragged my mother and me through the dirt, branding us as unforgivable criminals.
I totally snapped, the anger boiling over. I grabbed a nearby cup and hurled it straight at her. "That's a lie!"
The words had barely left my mouth when another sharp slap cracked against my face.
Cassian glared down at me, his expression pure poison. "Jean is too naive to ever come up with a lie like that! I never expected you and your mother to be this vicious. You honestly disgust me."
His eyes were filled with nothing but cold disappointment and utter revulsion.
Jean’s sobbing grew even louder and more dramatic, laying it on thick.
"Cassian, my career at the radio station is totally ruined now, anyway. I should just give this position back to Phoebe. She's the one who truly deserves it."
Suddenly, Cassian let out a dark sneer, his eyes dripping with mockery as he looked at me.
"Phoebe, if the only things that ever come out of your mouth are malicious rumors and insults, then you don't need to speak at all anymore."
My ears rang, a high‑pitched buzz filling my head. I couldn't wrap my brain around the fact that those horrific words were actually coming from his mouth.
Before I could even react, his bodyguards pinned my body down to the floor. They began forcing agonizingly hot, choking chili water straight down my throat.
"Ah!"
The burning liquid scorched my throat, making it feel like my vocal cords were literally rotting away on the spot. I tried desperately to clear my throat, but I couldn't spit it out, and I couldn't force out a single sound.
Then they tossed me onto the floor like a discarded rag doll, my stomach feeling like it was completely on fire.
There wasn't a single shred of pity on Cassian's face. He just stared down at me from his high horse, completely detached.
"I used to spoil you so much that you forgot your place. I think it's best if you just stay home and behave yourself from now on. Let Jean handle everything at the radio station, and you can finally learn to be quiet."
He reached down, ripped my press badge right off my chest, and tore it to shreds right in front of me. The tiny pieces drifted down, landing lightly all over my body.
Back in the day, he was the one who spent hours staying up with me, going over scripts line by line and celebrating every single award I won. He was the one who elevated me above everyone else, but he was also the one who could trample me into the mud without blinking.
From this moment on, my life as a radio DJ was dead.
Jean leaned back against Cassian's chest, her face practically glowing with smug triumph.
Just as I closed my eyes in absolute exhaustion, my phone suddenly buzzed with an incoming call from Los Angeles.
"Mrs. Sterling, the baby... Your boy is missing!"
