Chapter 4

667 Words
By the time I finally managed to drag myself up, Cassian had already taken Jean to the top floor of the radio station to celebrate her promotion. I barged into the room looking like a wild animal, and everyone turned around just to enjoy the spectacle of my total meltdown. Only Cassian had a faint, barely noticeable smirk playing on his lips. He obviously thought I had finally realized my mistake and was crawling back to make nice. But he was in for a major disappointment. That little boy is my own flesh and blood. Even if we're forced to live out our lives as strangers, I will protect him with everything I've got. I stomped my feet in absolute panic, sobbing hysterically as I tried to force the words past my ruined throat. "My son... my son..." The second those raspy words came out of my mouth, Cassian's face immediately turned pitch black. He thought he had me completely figured out. "Phoebe! You're seriously using your own child as a shield just over a stupid job? Do you even deserve to be a mother?! If he knew he had a mommy like you, he'd be absolutely ashamed of you!" I shook my head in pure despair. "No... No, our son is in critical—" "Enough!" Cassian's hair‑triggered temper completely exploded. "Phoebe, using our son as an excuse... isn't this all just a desperate play to compete with Jean for a job? I think you need to go home and think about what you've done!" The moment the words left his mouth, his bodyguards stepped forward and roughly tied me up. Jean strolled over to me, proudly flaunting her phone screen right in my face. In the live video feed, my son was hanging from a terrifyingly high ledge, completely traumatized and crying his eyes out. Then, Jean flashed a chilling shushing gesture at me, her smile turning incredibly sinister. I was instantly plunged into a black hole of utter despair. The bodyguards knew I used to be Cassian's favorite, so they just kept me under house arrest and didn't twist my arm any further. That is, until a team of doctors in white lab coats suddenly burst into the room at full speed, "President Sterling's orders. He said that the only way Mrs. Sterling will ever stop using the kid to compete for his attention is if we remove her womb. Just leave the rest to us." The bodyguards looked at each other, verified the text messages the doctor pulled up on his phone, and finally walked out of the room. I thought my heart was already dead, but the tears just wouldn't stop pouring down my face. I was strapped flat to the bed as the cold, sharp scalpel sliced through my abdomen, carving through layer after layer of my skin. The pain... It hurt so bad. Blood dripped down, completely soaking through the carpet, and my body kept pumping out endless, uncontrollable tears. But even though I wanted to scream for help at the top of my lungs, my throat was completely fried, and I couldn't force out a single sound. My mind flashed back to the time Cassian had lifted me into this exact same bed, gripping my waist and whispering about how much he wanted me to carry his baby. But looking back, he was never a good husband, and he sure as hell wasn't a good father. Cassian, you are a heartless, ungrateful monster. I am completely done loving you. End of Phoebe's POV Back across town, Cassian suddenly felt a strange, unsettling chill. He rushed back home, nervously yelling out, "Phoebe!" the second he walked through the door. Strangely, there was nothing but dead silence. Panic instantly set in. He had only ordered her to be put under house arrest. She shouldn't have been this upset. But the moment he threw open the bedroom door with his own hands, the sight waiting inside drove him completely insane.
