“Hi Mark.” Laura Campbell stood behind the register and broke into an open friendly, if not slightly flirtatious smile. “How can I help you? Hmm. Let me count the ways. Your place or mine?”
“This isn’t a social call.”
Her upturned mouth fell into neutral. “Oh? Then?”
“I need you to give me a statement as to your connection to Dr. Duncan Byrne.”
The neutral fell into grim.
“No, I’ve already told your officer. I did not know the man that well. I will not give the police a statement, Mark. I won’t sign anything.” She turned and booted up her computer.
Mark stared until her fingers slipped on the keys.
Laura turned back. “Let me see if I understand this. Edgar Allenton . . . was really Duncan Byrne, Dr. O’Brien’s ex-husband. He got swept away in the flash flood? Good riddanc
