Chapter 14 The breeze over the lake shot through her Annie’s light cotton blouse. She rubbed her arms to relieve the shivering and goose bumps that seemed to pierce her skin like an ice pick. She looked around and discovered that the chilly night air wasn’t the only ingredient that made up this rugged land. The main difference between New York City and upper Wisconsin country at night was the country’s sense of peace. The stars shone with a brightened intensity that the city couldn’t provide with its streetlights, buildings and pollution. In New York, the city never really shut down. Horns honked and the traffic never stopped. Here, the lake shimmered in the darkness. Its only disturbance, a plop, a splash and then silence. Yet, in some ways, the stillness was louder than the city street
