Annie and Julia walked across the square toward Lake Nager’s famous carnival. The one-week wonder of upper Wisconsin boasted of its Ferris wheel, roller coaster, carrousel, bumper cars and a midway.
Somehow or other, Mark, Paul and Lady met up with them as they crossed the green. Somehow or other indeed. Annie suspected she’d seen Mark pass by several shops where she and Julia had been. He’d never actually been in sight as they’d come out, but by the next store, he’d passed by again. And, of course, there was Lady. She was socializing with everyone, apparently well-known and well-liked. A female version of ‘hail fellow—well met’.
