“That’s me, silly,” Isabella said, smiling down at Lila. Then she looked up awkwardly at Daniel and saw him walking out of the room.
“Wait, you’re married?!” Lila burst out with her eyes widened in surprise.
Lila’s innocence warmed Isabella’s heart. She was just piecing everything together.
Isabella nodded awkwardly again, unable to explain the details to her younger sister. She had not yet told Lila everything and certainly not the whole truth about the arrangement with Damian. Lila was still too young to understand right now. All that mattered was that she was happy and their mum was getting the medical attention that she needed.
“Come on, let's go to dinner.” She said, pushing Lila towards the direction of the dining area.
Damian was already seated at the head of the grand table when they entered. His expression was cold, his brows were furrowed and he looked hot and bothered. Isabella could feel his intense stare from the opposite side of the table. Lila sat between them.
Damian had not forgotten about the message she mentioned earlier. But for now it seemed he was willing to play along and wait so he wouldn’t cause a scene.
The dining area was as opulent as the rest of the penthouse. A long marble table stretched out before them with several platters of silverware dishes filled with assorted food: shrimp linguine, steak, mashed potatoes and grilled chicken.
Lila’s face lit up as she took her seat, “Wow,” she started to dig in.
Isabella saw Damian’s face soften as he watched Lila. But as the meal progressed, Isabella could feel the tension building. Everytime she took a glance towards Damian’s direction, his eyes were on her. He was biding his time, waiting for the right moment to bring up the text message again.
Later that night after dinner, Isabella finally settled into her new room. Lila was asleep from the whole excitement of the day and Isabella herself was tired too. She lingered in the hallway for a moment as she watched her sister sleep, before heading back into the master bedroom.
The penthouse was eerily quiet now and she was about to tuck herself into bed when she heard a knock on the door. She knew who it was.
When she opened the door, his tall frame startled her. He wasn’t in a tailored suit like he usually would be, this time he was in dark grey pyjamas and he looked and smelt clean and fresh, like he had just come out of the shower.
Isabella stared up at his handsome face, something about him made her heart leap. His plump lips, his dark brown hair, his full eyebrows. He looked too good to be true.
“Isabella, we need to talk,” Damian said. His low and authoritative voice brought her out of her thoughts.
Isabella tensed up. She knew this was coming but the gravity in his tone sent a chill down her spine.
Damian walked into her room, his eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made it impossible for her to look away.
Why is everything so intense with him? she thought.
“That message from earlier,” he said “I need to see it. Now”
Isabella swallowed hard and turned around to grab her phone. Truly, she had almost forgotten all about the message in the flurry of excitement with her sister earlier. With shaky hands, she opened the message and handed her phone over to Damian.
He scanned the screen intensely, and his expression darkened.
“Whoever sent you this message knows more than they should,” he said suspiciously.
“What do you mean?” Isabella asked
Damian didn't answer right away, he ran his hands through his head and paced the room for a bit with his jaw clenched. Her phone was still in his hands. Isabella watched him, a bit confused. She could tell something was wrong. There was something he wasn’t telling her and she could sense it in her gut.
“The only people who knew about the wedding were the people present,” he said finally after a while. “This was not a public affair. Whoever sent this message..”
Isabella waited for him to finish his sentence but he ever did.
Cold shivers ran down Isabella’s spine. She took a moment to sit down on the bed and process the emotions she was feeling. The thought that someone had been spying on her confused her a bit.
“Who do you think it was?” she asked finally, looking up at him worriedly.
“I have a few guesses,” he said. His expression was dark, making her worry some more.
Isabella’s mind raced. Damian had his enemies, that much was clear. But who would have gone to the lengths of tracking their wedding? What was their endgame?
As she tried to piece the puzzle together, her mind went straight into protective mode.
“What about Lila?” Isabella asked, her voice trembling. “Could they be watching her too?”
Damian’s silence was answer enough.
Before Isabella could react, her phone buzzed in Damian’s hand again. Another text. Damian glanced at it, his eyes narrowing before he handed the phone back to her.
Isabella’s heart sank as she read the message.
I know everything.
She looked up at him in shock. What did they know? And how much danger were they really in?
Damian’s facial expression was still unreadable. But the tension in the room was high. “You need to be careful,” he said firmly. “From now on, you don’t go anywhere without me knowing. My security detail will be with you and Lila always.” he said.
“ And if you hear from this person again—”
His words were cut off by the sound of a soft knock on the door.
Both of them turned, their hearts pounding. Isabella felt a bit better when she heard Daniel’s voice called out from the other side of the door.
“Apologies for disturbing you both,” his voice was calm but worried, “but there's something you need to see, Mr Knight”
Damian's eyes narrowed, he was clearly irritated by the interruption but sensed the urgency in Daniel’s tone. He glanced back at Isabella, looking at her reassuringly. “You should go to bed, it's late. I’ll handle whatever it is.”
Isabella nodded and watched as he left the room.
As Damian stepped into the hallway with Daniel, the door closed softly behind them. Isabella stood in the middle of the room, her phone was still in her hand and took another look at the message.
Who sent the message? What did they know? And what was so important that Daniel had to interrupt them at this moment?
Isabella took a deep breath and tried to calm her thoughts. She finally changed into her pyjamas and got into bed in an attempt to go to sleep. But as the seconds ticked by, her anxiety only grew.
Moments later after tossing and turning without any sign of sleep, curiosity got the best of her and she stood up from bed. Her hand hovered slightly over the door handle and her ears were pressed to the door. She couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever Damian was about to learn, it was something that would affect them both and she needed to know what kind of trouble she was getting into, what kind of trouble she could potentially be getting Lila into.
She turned the door knob as silently as she could, straining her ear to hear the conversation between Daniel and Damian
"... there's been a breach," she heard Daniel say..
Damian’s response was sharp, but too quiet for her to catch.
Isabella leaned in closer, straining to hear.
“She must not know.” Damian’s voice was more audible now.
She held her breath in shock. Are they talking about me?
Isabella’s heart raced. Now, she was certain that Damian knew more than he was letting on and she feared for her safety and her sisters. She couldn’t go to bed that night, she stayed awake pondering the realisation that she might be in far more danger than she ever imagined.
