The Thursday office hours slot was 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Amara arrived at 2:17, which was deliberate — late enough that she wouldn't be the first student through the door, early enough that she wasn't performing reluctance. She'd spent twenty minutes in the library before this, rereading her essay outline, confirming that the question he'd raised about circularity was legitimate and that she had a response to it.
She was here for the essay. That was the complete and accurate reason.
She knocked.
"Come in."
The office was the same as before — books, organized disorder, the window with its uninspiring view — but there was a difference she registered before she could name it. A second coffee cup on the desk, still steaming. He'd been expecting someone, or had recently had someone. The chair at the angle to his desk was positioned slightly differently than last time, pulled an inch closer, which meant someone had sat in it recently and he hadn't reset it yet.
She sat. He looked up from the paper he was marking, set the pen down with the particular deliberateness of someone giving a conversation their full attention.
"The essay," he said.
"The circularity problem," she said.
"Walk me through your current structure."
She did. Cleanly, without notes — she'd internalized the argument enough that she didn't need them. The Barthes assumption, the self-undermining logic, the argument that a deliberate blindspot was a rhetorical strategy rather than an oversight. She laid it out in four clear moves and then stopped.
He was quiet for a moment. Outside, someone walked past the office door, footsteps fading down the corridor.
"The circularity," he said. "You see it?"
"I think so. I'm arguing that Barthes maintains a blindspot intentionally — but to make that argument I have to claim access to his intention. Which Barthes himself says is unavailable."
"So you're using the author's intention to argue against the author's intention."
"Yes."
"And your solution?"
She'd worked this out at 11 p.m. the previous night, sitting at her kitchen table with a cold cup of tea. "I reframe the argument. I'm not claiming access to his intention — I'm identifying a structural feature of the text. The self-undermining logic is there whether or not Barthes put it there deliberately. The text performs what it argues against. That's observable in the text itself, not in the author's mind."
Voss looked at her for a long moment.
"That's better than the original argument," he said.
"I know."
Something shifted in his expression — that almost-smile, contained before it fully arrived. "You came here already knowing the solution."
"I came here to confirm it held up," she said. "There's a difference."
"There is." He picked up his pen and set it down again, a small idle movement she hadn't seen him make before. "The reframe works. The risk is that you lose the psychological dimension — the idea of a cultivated blindspot is more interesting than a structural irony. Find a way to preserve the texture of the original claim inside the new structure."
She wrote that down. "How?"
"You're arguing the text can't see itself. That's structural. But you can also argue that this particular structural feature is convenient for the text's project — that the irony serves the polemic even if it isn't designed to. Convenience doesn't require intention."
She stopped writing and looked at him. "That's elegant."
"It's your argument," he said. "I just cleared the debris."
She looked back at her notes. The office was quiet — the particular quiet of a building in the mid-afternoon, when most people were in seminars or away from their desks. She was aware of the quality of the silence, the way it had a different texture than the seminar's silences, more private, less performed.
"Can I ask you something about the essay you distributed?" she said.
A beat. "Which aspect?"
"The defended reader." She kept her eyes on her notebook. "You argue that critical distance is a form of defense rather than rigor. But the essay doesn't address what the reader is defending against. It treats the defense as the problem without asking what made it necessary."
The silence that followed was longer than his usual thinking pauses.
She looked up.
He was watching her with an expression she hadn't seen before — not the focused interlocutor's attention, not the pedagogical assessment. Something quieter. Something that had briefly stopped being professional and then, in the moment she saw it, was professional again.
"That's a fair criticism," he said.
"I'm not criticizing. I'm asking."
"The distinction matters to you."
"Doesn't it to you?"
He was quiet for a moment. Then: "The essay was written a long time ago. I'm not sure I'd make the same argument now."
"What argument would you make now?"
He looked at her steadily. "That the defense is sometimes the appropriate response to the environment. That rigor and self-protection aren't always opposed." He paused. "That context matters more than the essay admits."
She held his gaze for a moment — long enough to know she was holding it, not long enough to make it something else.
"That's a different essay," she said.
"Yes," he said. "It is."
She looked down at her notes. Her pen was in her hand but she hadn't written anything in the last two minutes, which she noticed now and felt slightly exposed by.
"I should let you get back to marking," she said.
"Probably." He didn't move to retrieve the marked papers. "The essay reframe — have a draft by end of next week. Bring it to office hours if you want a second read before submission."
"I will." She closed the notebook, lifted her bag. "Thank you."
"Miss Cole."
She stopped at the door. Turned.
He was looking at her with that careful, contained expression. "The question you asked — about what the defended reader is defending against." He paused. "It's the right question. Keep asking it."
She nodded once and stepped into the corridor.
She was halfway down the stairs when she almost walked directly into Diane Chen, who was coming up with a folder pressed to her chest and an expression of focused purpose that stuttered slightly when she saw Amara.
"Oh," Diane said. "Hey."
"Hey."
A beat. Diane's eyes moved — up toward the third floor, then back to Amara. The calculation in that look was brief but visible.
"Office hours?" Diane asked.
"Essay question," Amara said.
"Right." Diane smiled, and the smile was perfectly pleasant and contained something Amara couldn't immediately name. "He's still up there?"
"Yes."
"Great." Diane moved past her up the stairs, heels precise on the stone steps. "See you Tuesday."
Amara stood on the landing and watched her go. She thought about the second coffee cup, still steaming when she'd arrived. She thought about the chair, pulled an inch closer than she'd left it last time.
She thought about the look on Diane's face — the calculation, the smile, the eyes that had gone to the third floor before they came back to her.
She turned and went down the stairs and out into the afternoon, where the light had gone pale and thin and the wind had picked up with the first real suggestion of autumn.
She walked across the quad with her notebook in her arms and her thoughts arranged in careful order and at the back of all of it, quiet and persistent, one question she hadn't asked him and hadn't answered for herself:
Context matters more than the essay admits.
What context was he talking about?
Because the way he'd said it — the pause before it, the weight of it — hadn't felt like a point about literary theory.
It had felt like a confession.
And the thing about confessions, she knew, was that they were never really about the thing they appeared to be about.
They were about what came before.
