The Dungeon

814 Words
Alpha and Luna made their way to the dungeons. It was time to talk to the surviving rogues. Carter met them down there. They nodded to the guard and the guard unlocked the doors. The "dungeon" was actually nothing but an underground jail cell. There were a few cots, a sink and a toilet. It was clean; Luna insisted on treating their "guests" with dignity, even if they didn't deserve it. Alpha and Luna believed in justice. However, an unprovoked attack on their pack meant death. Alpha didn't relish this part of being a leader. He'd always had the dream of running a pack in peace. He knew it was necessary to strong and sometimes there was no such thing as mercy when protecting your pack.  The guard walked in front of them towards the cell. The rogues sat there, in human form now. When they were captured, they were bound with wolfs-bane and so they were unable to keep their wolf form until they were released. They looked a bit rough, as they weren't able to heal properly from the fight, but they were provided food and water. The pair stared at Alpha as he stood there. "How did you get in?" They remained silent. "You know the penalty for invading my pack?" The rogues looked at each other, and then back at Alpha. They nodded. "You could make it easier for yourselves if you talked." The rogues broke eye contact, but remained mute. Alpha turned to Carter. "Make the arrangements." He took Luna's arm and started to walk out of the dungeon when one of the rogues yelled, "Wait!" Alpha paused, but didn't immediately turn around. The young rogue continued. "We were told to get the girl."  Alpha turned around, listening. "Go on." The other rogue hissed at his partner. The young rogue wasn't deterred. "The girl is important. I don't know how or why." At that, the older rogue took his chained hands and put them over the younger's head and started choking him. The guard rushed in, and separated the two. The younger fell to the floor and gasped for air. Alpha nodded to the guard, and the guard helped him up. He led the rogue into the adjoining cell. "You better keep your mouth shut." The older rogue growled. Alpha's eyes darkened as he leaned forward, scrutinizing this scruffy looking rogue. "I would say it's you that better keep your mouth shut." Without breaking eye contact, Alpha instructed the guard to gag this prisoner. If he kept talking, he may dissuade the younger rogue from talking. The rogue sat there, bound and gagged. He was furious, but could do nothing about it. Alpha went over to the cell where the younger rogue sat. "Well?" He hesitated, looking over at the older captive. The young rogue swallowed hard. Alpha could see his Adam's apple move. He waited patiently for the man to speak. The rogue started talking. "We were sent here by the Black Moon pack's Alpha. He has an oracle that told him the girl was special. Their Alpha promised us a place among his pack warriors if we succeeded in bringing her. We weren't told what was so special about her, or what he would do with her once he had her." Alpha stood there silently, waiting for more. The young man stopped speaking then, and his eyes rolled into the back of his head.  Alpha gestured to the guard. They unlocked the cell as the man started writhing in pain. His face darkened as he started to choke. Alpha looked at the guard. "Unchain him!" It was too late. The young rogue was dead. Alpha stood up. He knew dark magic was at play here. He walked over to the other cell. The older prisoner was also dead. Luna stood there, silent. She had seen this magic before, when she was a child. She glanced at Alpha as he took her hand. "It's time we paid our own oracle a visit." He nodded. They made their way out of the dungeon and walked up the stairs that lead to the pack house. They didn't speak, but knew they had to figure out why Ember was so special. This must have been why they attacked a few months ago.  Cook was in the kitchen when they came back up. He made them each a cup of coffee, then added a shot of brandy to each one. They smiled gratefully, and sat down. Alpha took a drink. He felt the warmth flood his body. "We need to send someone out to watch over the children. Discreetly, of course." Luna nodded. Cook gave the pair a questioning look, and Alpha sighed. "You may want to sit down, and pour yourself a cup of this as well." Cook obliged, and Alpha told the old wolf what had transpired in the dungeons.
