THE DEATH OF INNOCENCE

1128 Words
As the years passed, Adrian Blackwood slowly became a stranger to himself. The cheerful boy who once ran through the gardens of Blackwood Manor chasing butterflies was disappearing. The child who would stop to help an injured bird or rescue a trapped animal was being replaced by someone who rarely smiled. And Isabella Blackwood watched the change with satisfaction. She understood something Richard never noticed. A child's heart was like soft clay. Whoever shaped it during those early years could decide what kind of person it would become. And Isabella was determined to shape Adrian into someone who could no longer trust, love, or show weakness. Every time Richard left for a business trip, Blackwood Manor changed. The warm smiles disappeared. The gentle voice disappeared. Only fear remained. "Why did you break that glass?" Isabella asked one morning. Adrian stood in the dining room, staring at the broken cup scattered across the marble floor. "I didn't mean to," he said quietly. "My hand slipped." Isabella walked toward him slowly. A younger Adrian would have expected comfort. A hug. A gentle voice telling him everything would be okay. Instead, he received punishment. "That is your problem," she said coldly. "You always have excuses." "I'm sorry." Isabella looked at him with disappointment. "Sorry is what weak people say when they want forgiveness without becoming better." Those words stayed inside Adrian's mind. Slowly, he began believing that regret was weakness. He began hiding his emotions. When Damian and Victor insulted him, he stopped responding. When they pushed him, he stopped complaining. When he felt hurt, he stopped crying. Isabella believed she was making him stronger. But she was only building walls around a wounded child. The only thing that still brought Adrian comfort was Max. Max was a golden retriever Sophia had given him before her death. The dog had grown alongside him. Whenever Adrian felt lonely, Max was there. When Adrian sat alone in the garden remembering his mother, Max would place his head gently on his lap. When Adrian cried silently at night, Max would sleep beside his bed. To Adrian, Max was not just a pet. Max was family. And Isabella hated that. She hated anything that connected Adrian to Sophia. Max was one of the last reminders of Richard's first wife. Every time Adrian smiled while playing with the dog, Isabella was reminded that Sophia's love still lived inside Blackwood Manor. She wanted to erase every piece of that memory. One afternoon, Isabella watched from the window as Adrian played with Max in the garden. The boy was laughing. It was a sound she rarely heard anymore. For a moment, she saw the old Adrian. The innocent child she had not yet completely destroyed. Her expression became cold. "Still holding onto your mother's memories," she whispered. That evening, she decided she would remove the final thing that gave Adrian comfort. --- The following morning, Isabella called Adrian to the garden. "Come here," she said. Adrian walked toward her carefully. "What is it?" Isabella held something behind her back. "I have a lesson to teach you." Adrian looked confused. "What lesson?" She revealed a knife. The boy froze. "Why do you have that?" Isabella looked toward Max, who was lying peacefully beneath a tree. "Because today you are going to prove that you are no longer a weak child." Adrian's face changed. "What do you mean?" Isabella placed the knife in his trembling hands. "Kill the dog." For several seconds, Adrian couldn't understand what he had heard. The world seemed to stop. "What?" "You heard me." He immediately shook his head. "No. I can't do that." Isabella stepped closer. "You want to become powerful one day, don't you?" Adrian looked at Max. The dog lifted his head and wagged his tail. He trusted him completely. "I love Max," Adrian whispered. Isabella's eyes hardened. "Love is a weakness." "No..." "Your father built an empire because he learned that emotions make people weak. If you want to become like him, you must learn this lesson." Adrian's hands began shaking. "I don't want to hurt him." Isabella lowered her voice. "Then maybe you are not worthy of being a Blackwood." Those words struck him deeply. For a child who had spent years feeling unwanted, the fear of losing his father's love was overwhelming. Isabella knew exactly where to attack. "Your father already has a new family. Damian and Victor are strong. They understand how the world works." She looked at him with disgust. "But you..." A cruel smile appeared on her face. "You are still your mother's little boy." Adrian felt tears forming in his eyes. He looked at Max. The dog slowly walked toward him, completely unaware of the cruelty happening around him. Max trusted him. That made it worse. Adrian dropped the knife. "I can't." Isabella picked it up and placed it back in his hand. "Everyone learns the hard way." The boy stood there trembling. The same hands that had gently fed Max, played with Max, and hugged Max now held a weapon against him. "Please..." Adrian whispered. "Don't make me do this." But Isabella showed no mercy. She turned away. "Decide what kind of man you want to become." --- Adrian fell to his knees. The battle inside him was unbearable. A part of him wanted to run. A part of him wanted his father to appear and save him. A part of him wanted Sophia to come back and tell him everything would be okay. But nobody came. The mansion remained silent. And in that silence... Something inside Adrian broke. That night, the young boy locked himself in his room. He cried until his voice disappeared. He cried because the last piece of his mother had been taken from him. He cried because nobody protected him. He cried because he finally understood that the world was not the safe place Sophia had taught him it was. The next morning, Richard returned from his business trip. He walked into the mansion carrying gifts for Adrian. But the excited child who used to run into his arms was gone. Richard noticed the change. "Son?" Adrian looked at him. For a moment, Richard saw pain hidden deep inside his son's eyes. "Is something wrong?" Adrian wanted to tell him everything. He wanted to say: "Father, she hurt me." "Father, she made me do something terrible." "Father, I need you." But he remained silent. Because Isabella had already taught him the lesson she wanted him to learn. Never show weakness. Never trust anyone. Never let anyone see your pain. "I'm fine," Adrian replied. Those two words would become the biggest lie of his life. And slowly... The wounded child would become the ruthless man the world would one day fear.
