Madeline impressed not only Tinkerbell but also me with the gift she bought for my date. She wanted me to woo Tinkerbell, probably thinking I needed it since people often saw me as awkward around women simply because I didn’t go on dates every weekend.
I rather stayed at home and focus on me than to be with someone without actually enjoying the company. Forcing myself to be charming and polite tired me out emotionally. So I avoided it altogether.
There was no forcing myself tonight though, I enjoyed Tinkerbell’s company. Everything with her felt right, comfortable and safe. Wooing her wasn’t on my agenda, we were already there. We didn’t make it official, but it did feel like that.
Maybe tonight the words needed to be said.
Arriving at the restaurant Tinkerbell was already seated at our table. She looked excited to be here tonight. She also looked amazing in her mint green dress which had a little fluff to the skirt. She actually looked like Tinkerbell this evening.
I think she dressed up like that as a joke, but she looked gorgeous nonetheless.
Tinkerbell got to her feet when she spotted me, a smile spreading across her subtly made-up face. As I reached her she grabbed onto my jacket and pulled me in for a kiss. A quick kiss as if we did it on a daily basis. The gift Madeline made me take with me in my free hand. Tinkerbell didn’t seem to notice since she was focused on me.
“You look amazing, Amber.”
She sat down, tilting her head to the side, “No Tinkerbell?” Her eyes glittered, “I was getting used to it.”
Sitting down as well I grabbed the menu which she held out to me, placing it in front of me on the table. I handed her the gift, loving the look of surprise in her eyes. She hesitantly took it, her fingers gliding over the fancy looking wrapping paper.
“You didn’t have to get me anything.” She trailed off, she did look happy with it though. I’d let Madeline know, I couldn’t take all the credit.
“I didn’t.” I let her know which made her eyebrows shoot up, “Madeline was the one who came up with the idea.”
Tinkerbell seemed intrigued then, “Really? I’m curious, Madeline seemed like a competent woman. I bet she’s good at guessing what to give people.”
“She’s good at making me look good.”
Tinkerbell laughed, “A competent woman then.” She joked.
Very cautiously Tinkerbell unwrapped the gift, stilling in her movement. She looked at me, her mouth falling open in complete and utter surprise. I didn’t know what Madeline got her but now I was curious too. I wanted to reach over the table and grab the gift but Tinkerbell quickly slapped my hand away.
“Don’t you dare, this is mine and I’ll guard it with my life.”
I didn't expect her to react like that, I tried to take a peek but Tinkerbell grabbed the gift and held it to her chest, guarding it against me.
“Amber…”
She smirked, “Madeline got me the new horror shooter game with developer signatures.”
I had an inkling of what she was talking about and it made me despise my assistant a little bit. She never gave me an amazing gift like that. To be fair I was the one who paid for it but still, she gave Tinkerbell the perfect gift.
“She gave you the perfect gift then.”
She nodded, "But I suppose I should thank you too since you're the one who paid for it." She flashed me a cheeky grin, "Quite an expensive gift for a first date, don't you think?" She placed the game besides her on the table, thanking the waiter who came by to throw away the wrapping paper, "Chocolate would have sufficed."
I couldn't help but laugh. She didn't quite get why I was amused though.
“Inside joke.” I told her, “I do need to have a word with Madeline. Apparently, she has a big network and never got me an amazing Christmas gift like this. I always get perfume or candles, which is fine but-“
“It’s probably because she knows you'll never leave your house if she buys you what you want. Perfume and candles are what you need."
“Are you getting cheeky with me tonight?”
“I’ll tone it down since the dishes we’re going to eat tonight will be spicy enough.”
The dishes were flavorful and spicy but nothing I couldn't handle, I think Tinkerbell expected me to break out in sweat. She was disappointed.
“You’re in such a mood tonight.”
She didn’t even deny it, “You’re full of surprises.”
Tinkerbell wanted to order a bottle of soju but I stopped her. She didn’t like it but there was no way we’d be drinking again. I had work the next day and I think she needed a break from the heavy drinking too.
That couldn’t be healthy.
“They have homemade ice tea.” I casually suggested a substitute.
She knew what I was doing though and she let it pass, grabbing the menu she scanned the drinks and opted for tea with honey. Ordering the tea I also asked for the red bean ice-cream.
“You’re going all out tonight.”
She didn’t sound upset so I knew she wasn’t pissed at me for changing her order. I just was looking out for both of us. Not that she wasn't cute when she was drunk and passed out in my bed, but there were limits.
Tinkerbell just didn’t want to admit hers.
She was stubborn and proud and at the same time kind and cute and definitely brutally honest. Those were things I could live with. The waiter came over to serve our drinks and dessert. She seemed to enjoy the red bean ice-cream. It was subtly sweet, it went well with the tea.
“This is pretty good.”
The look on her face was priceless.
“This is your place, you never ordered the ice-cream?” I asked her, amused with the faces of joy she made.
She glared at me, “I never got to it. We always order so many side dishes that we can’t even eat the main dish anymore. It’s sad but that’s how we eat most of the time.”
She said we, which made me think she was talking about Grace. The way her smile dropped and that warm look in her eyes faded told me I was right. I needed to change the subject, I didn't want to ruin the good mood between us by bringing up that woman.
She was like weed, unwanted and destroying everything.
I was aware I was being a little harsh but Grace has been written off a long time ago. Now I wanted to make sure she wouldn’t ruin Amber’s life. The blonde seemed like the type of person who couldn’t let go and would bring everyone down because she wasn’t happy.
Amber didn’t deserve that.
“I like spending time with you.”
She looked up, dropping the spoon she had been holding which splattered ice-cream over the table. Grabbing a napkin I was ready to clean it but the eager waiter beat me to it. When the table was clean I shook my head at her, laughing quietly.
“Didn’t mean to scare you like that.”
“It’s not fair, Nick. That was one sneaky stealthy move you pulled.”
I laughed louder, “What are you talking about?”
She narrowed her eyes on me, “By now you should know I also like spending time with you.”
“No need to sound so angry about it.” I tried to joke about it but Amber wasn’t having it.
“I’m not angry.” She did sound like she was but I didn’t want to argue about that when we were having a fun night out. At least I liked to think so, “You just caught me off guard.”
“I wanted to make sure you knew that I enjoy your company.”
Her lips then curled up to what looked like a rather sinister smile, “I see.” She trailed off, “Then let me say what you intended to say but couldn’t.” She reached over the table and grabbed my hand. I didn’t trust her at the moment, not when she smiled at me like she was ready to head into battle and freestyle it, “We’re official.”
I laced our fingers together, giving her hand a squeeze. She was right it was what I intended to say but she beat me to it, like always.

I walked Amber to her apartment, holding her hand as we quietly discussed her game plan. She had an early morning tomorrow, heading to the studio to shoot some pictures for a fashion site. It didn’t pay much but she enjoyed it. The way she talked about it made me smile.
“Seems to me you have a busy day tomorrow.”
She stopped in front of her door and held up her game, “So I’m giving myself an hour to play this.”
I narrowed my eyes on her, “I’ll make sure to keep you to it.”
She grinned, “Are you going to stalk me?”
“For your own good.”
She leaned in, pressing a kiss to my lips, “Or you could just come inside.” She suggested.
It wasn’t that it wasn’t a tempting offer but since it was our first official date I wanted to keep things nice, be the gentleman I usually was. My smile said enough. She huffed, she didn’t look too disappointed though.
“You already won me over, you know.” She reminded me.
“I know.” The firm confirmation made her raise an eyebrow at me, “But tonight is special. Let’s call it a night with a kiss. Let me be a gentleman tonight.”
She grabbed onto my jacket, “Sometimes a girl just wants her boyfriend to get messy with her, you know.” She then pressed her lips against mine to silence me, “But I also like the idea of you treating me like I’m special.”
“You are special to me.”
She had no idea how special she was to me. This was the first time I got this serious with a woman. She was the first woman I let in. I didn’t tell her but I was sure my family would. They liked to embarrass me at family dinner.
I knew they did it because they cared so I couldn’t be angry with them.
Ending the night on a good note, I kissed her like I meant it. I placed my hand on the back of her head and deepened the kiss, causing her to cling onto my jacket. When I pulled away we were both out of breath. She smiled at me, giving me that look which told me I was special to her as well.
“Night, Amber.”
I loved how her cheeks heated up hearing her name coming from my lips. Smiling at her I turned around and left. I was climbing into the awaiting car, the driver closing the door for me when my phone rang. Grabbing my phone I answered it immediately.
“Dear sister, isn’t it past your bedtime?”
“Shut up and tell me everything.’
I laughed, “My God people are fast.”
"Yeah, your blonde friend made sure you're the center of attention lately. I mean you're not on the same level as Jake but you're a close second."
“Close second.”
I could hear the smile in her voice, "You're competing with that soccer player who has been caught cheating on his girlfriend with some hot curvy supermodel. Your story is so much cuter though. People are wondering who this mystery girl is with the pink hair."
“I love the hair.”
Nina was quiet for a minute which worried me. I called her name a few times, thinking something happened to her.
“You’re falling for her.” Nina whispered, “This is big.”
“No, it’s not.”
I knew it was though, but I couldn’t let my sister get all excited over this. Amber and I were official, she stated it loud and clear but I didn’t want to dive into it without any caution. It could go bad fast.
“Sure, whatever you say.” She brushed it off, “You deserve this Nick. Jake and I won’t let that stupid girl ruin this for you. We have our back.” She promised.
Jake and I. It was odd hearing that but it was true, Jacob Blackwood was treating me like family too. He’d make a great dad to that little baby.
“Thanks.”
Giving in I told Nina about my date with Amber. She listened, asking me more questions about the food then my time with Amber. She knew things were okay between Amber and me so she didn’t bother to question me about my relationship with her. The conversation was light yet full of laughter. It was good hearing Nina laugh like that. When I ended the call I caught myself smiling again.
The driver didn’t say anything but the look in his eyes said it all.
