Chapter 8: An Unexpected Companion

1185 Words
Isla stood at the door, facing a hopeful-looking Jason. Her tone was firm. “No, Jason. Not this time.” “Why not?” Jason shrugged, feigning innocence. “I can carry your stuff, distract the bad guys, and even c***k a few jokes to ease the tension. Sounds like a great deal, doesn’t it?” “This isn’t a joke, Jason. It’s dangerous.” Isla sighed, patting his shoulder. “Besides, I can handle it on my own. Thanks, but you’re not coming.” Jason opened his mouth to protest, but Isla had already turned and walked away, her steps resolute, leaving him behind with an exaggerated look of disappointment. Hours later, Isla boarded her flight, found her seat, and stashed her bag under the seat in front of her. She had just pulled out her notebook when a familiar voice broke through the hum of boarding passengers. “Well, if it isn’t our fearless adventurer, Isla!” She froze and looked up in disbelief. Jason was standing in the aisle, grinning from ear to ear, holding a plane ticket in one hand and a backpack stuffed with snacks in the other. “What are you doing here?” Isla’s eyebrows shot up in a mixture of annoyance and confusion. “Flying,” Jason said casually, holding up his ticket for emphasis. “And, wouldn’t you believe it? My seat’s right next to yours! Crazy coincidence, huh?” Isla pinched the bridge of her nose and groaned. “Jason, I told you this trip is dangerous.” “Yep, you did.” Jason shoved his bag into the overhead compartment, still smiling. “But you know me—I’m allergic to danger. It just doesn’t stick to me. And besides, you’d be bored without me.” “I don’t need company.” Isla’s tone was sharp. “Especially not someone who’ll just get in the way.” Jason plopped down in the seat beside her, putting on a mock-offended face. “Ouch. That hurts, Isla. But it’s fine. I know you’re just worried I’ll steal the spotlight. Don’t worry, I’ll stay out of the way.” Isla rolled her eyes so hard she was sure they nearly got stuck. Sighing deeply, she leaned back in her seat, resigning herself to the fact that Jason wasn’t going anywhere—for now. As the flight took off, Isla buried herself in studying the map, doing her best to ignore Jason’s presence. But the question lingered in her mind: How had he known she’d be on this flight? And why was he so determined to tag along? She glanced sideways at him, catching him flipping through a travel magazine. The smirk on his face suggested he wasn’t nearly as absorbed in it as he pretended to be. “Jason,” Isla said, her voice low but edged with suspicion. “How did you even end up on the same flight as me?” Jason didn’t look up from the magazine, though his grin widened slightly. “Fate, I guess.” “Cut the crap.” Isla narrowed her eyes. “What are you really up to?” Jason hesitated for a moment before brushing her off with a laugh. “Relax, Isla. I just thought your little adventure sounded cool. Thought I’d join in. That’s all.” Isla didn’t press him further, but the uneasy feeling in her chest only grew stronger. The plane was cruising smoothly, and the passengers around them appeared calm and relaxed. Jason sat next to Isla, occasionally glancing down at the documents in his hands, but more often than not, he couldn’t help but steal glances at her. He knew this adventure wasn’t just about finding the map; it was about unraveling a web of unknown secrets. Although Isla appeared to be at ease, Jason knew her heart was full of determination and resolve. Suddenly, Jason realized he had drunk too much soda, so he decided to take a trip to the restroom. As he walked down the aisle, he casually glanced toward the back of the plane and noticed a man sitting near the rear. The man, wearing a black mask, sat still, staring blankly out the window as if lost in thought, completely unaware of his surroundings. Despite the mask obscuring his face, Jason immediately recognized him — it was Caleb, the mysterious figure. Jason froze, a look of surprise crossing his face. He stopped for a moment, his mind racing, “What is he doing here?” After a few seconds of contemplation, Jason didn’t walk away immediately but instead continued to the restroom, though his curiosity was piqued. After washing his hands, he walked back to his seat, still thinking about Caleb. He knew Caleb was no ordinary man. Returning to his seat, Jason appeared distant, which didn’t go unnoticed by Isla. Curiously, she asked, “What happened? Why do you seem so quiet all of a sudden after going to the bathroom?” Jason leaned closer and quietly said, “I just saw someone familiar in the back of the plane.” Isla raised an eyebrow and responded with a smile, “Oh? Who is it? Someone who could make our cheerful and optimistic Jason suddenly so serious?” Jason didn’t immediately respond but instead handed Isla a photo. In the picture, a young man stood beside an elderly man, and the younger man had a distinct tuft of hair sticking up. Isla stared at the photo, then quickly turned to Jason and asked, “Wait… this is my great-grandfather, right? How is it that Caleb is in the same photo?” Jason’s expression shifted, looking perplexed but also intrigued. “Are you sure? Caleb is no ordinary person. He’s got a lot of stories behind him, and there’s no way he just randomly boarded the plane with you.” Isla nodded, her voice firm. “I know he has a complicated background, but to me, he’s a trustworthy partner. I believe in him.” Jason stayed silent for a moment, studying her. While he still had many questions, he could feel the conviction in Isla’s voice and understood that her decision was based on something important. He didn’t press her any further, simply letting out a sigh before returning to his seat. The plane continued to cruise smoothly, and the passengers began preparing for landing. The clouds outside thickened, signaling that their destination was near. Caleb still sat in the back, his face expressionless, as if he had long since gotten used to solitude and silence. Isla couldn’t help but glance toward where Caleb was sitting, a strange, inexplicable feeling rising in her chest. This journey was destined to be anything but ordinary. She whispered to herself, “This is just the beginning.” Jason looked at her, though his mind was still full of questions. He knew, however, that no matter where this adventure took them, he couldn’t stop Isla from moving forward. The sound of the plane’s engines began to soften, signaling their imminent arrival. The story ahead seemed to be only just beginning.
