Chapter 20

No Turning Back They continued crawling down the narrow passage, getting deeper and deeper. The air became heavier, each breath feeling like it was sucking away every bit of their strength. Jason’s complaints echoed through the tight space. His size made the passage even more cumbersome, but he didn’t stop. Isla had grown used to his grumbling, instead focusing on moving forward, her eyes fixed ahead, her steps growing more urgent. As they moved further, a strange change began to take place. The air, which had once been cold and suffocating, was now growing warmer. The temperature was rising steadily, a stark contrast to the freezing chill they had felt earlier. Isla paused for a moment, frowning. “Don’t you think the air feels different? It’s warmer now.” Jason looked up, squinting ahead. “You’re right. This isn’t the same freezing place. It feels like something is heating up.” He hesitated for a second before he started crawling faster. “Let’s keep moving. We need to know what’s ahead.” Isla nodded, the strange warmth urging her to move faster. “Let’s go. We need to find out what’s ahead.” Her pace quickened, almost like a jog, her heart racing with a sense of urgency. There was something calling to her from the front, a pull she couldn’t explain. She couldn’t slow down, not now. When she finally reached the end of the tunnel, she was taken aback by what she saw. In front of her was a massive, smooth, tile-like structure blocking their path. It shone with an eerie glow, smooth as a mirror, with no apparent seams. It was as though the passage had been sealed by some unearthly force. She hesitated for a moment, shining her flashlight on the object, but its reflective surface made it difficult to see anything else. Looking over at Jason, she saw that he had stopped too, his face tense. “What is this?” Isla whispered. Jason stood beside her, staring at the tile-like structure. After a brief silence, he smirked. “Looks like we’re stuck again,” he said with a hint of sarcasm. “But since it’s so mysterious, why not try to blow it open?” Isla raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. “How much explosives did you bring? Are you sure we can blow this thing open?” Jason shrugged casually. “Better to have too much than not enough.” He then reached into his backpack and pulled out several packages of explosives, even more than before. Isla sighed, exasperated. “You really are a walking disaster with all these explosives. Are you sure you even know how to handle them?” Jason grinned mischievously. “Well, when you’re exploring a place like this, you can never be too prepared.” Isla rolled her eyes, but couldn’t help feeling a mix of concern and awe. They were surrounded by so many mysterious traps, creatures, and strange phenomena. Was it all designed to keep them from finding whatever lay ahead? She didn’t know, but with no other options, they had no choice but to continue. “Alright, fine. Go ahead, but if this backfires, I’m not taking the blame,” she said, her voice resigned. Jason chuckled and got to work. His movements were quick and efficient, as if he had done this many times before. He attached the explosives to the stone structure with practiced ease, adjusting the fuses. He then turned, gesturing for Isla to move back. “Ready!” he called, before detonating the charges. The explosion rang through the tunnel with a deafening roar. The entire passage seemed to shake, dust and debris flying everywhere, and the air thickened with the acrid smell of gunpowder. Isla braced herself, her heart pounding as she squinted through the smoke, waiting for the dust to settle. When the smoke finally cleared, she saw the stone tile shattered into pieces, revealing a blackened passage behind it, glowing with a faint, eerie light. A chilling aura seemed to emanate from the opening, like something beckoning them toward the unknown. “Let’s go, then. Let’s see what’s inside,” Jason said, his voice light as he walked toward the dark passage. Isla hesitated for a moment, her instincts warning her about the dangers ahead, but she knew they had no choice now. She followed Jason into the darkness, the eerie glow from the passage the only source of light. The unknown stretched out before them, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that they had crossed a point of no return. The path ahead would lead them deeper into the mystery of the temple—and possibly into the heart of whatever had been waiting for them all along.
