Chapter 15

The air inside the temple remained heavy and tense as the monster’s body lay on the ground, blood mingling with the earth, emitting a putrid stench. The four of them stood around the lifeless creature, silently observing its immense form. The creature’s structure was unlike anything known on Earth — its skin was tough, like scales, and in some areas, there were fibrous protrusions resembling insect wings, suggesting it was a being from another world. Isla couldn’t help but move closer, examining the creature closely. Her brows furrowed as she tried to make sense of it. Her mind kept returning to the attack they had endured earlier, still unable to comprehend why this being was inside the temple and what it truly was. She softly muttered, “This can’t be an Earth creature… Where did they come from?” Caleb, still calm, studied the monster with a detached gaze, his expression unreadable. He turned to Elliot, awaiting further explanation. Elliot’s eyes remained focused on the creature, and after a long pause, he spoke in a hushed tone. “This is not any known species on Earth. Their sensory system is completely unique, especially their eyes and light-sensitive cells. These creatures are probably light-sensitive, communal beings.” “Light-sensitive beings?” Isla raised an eyebrow, unfamiliar with the concept. “Yes,” Elliot nodded, his voice grave, “They rely on extraordinarily sensitive light receptors to perceive their environment. This explains how they can survive in complete darkness, and how they attacked us without making a sound. They navigate entirely through light and sensation, unlike any species we know.” “So they can see us in the dark?” Jason asked, still puzzled. Elliot turned to him, his face serious. “Not just that. They can sense even the faintest signals we give off — our scent, body heat, and even our movements.” Caleb glanced at the fallen creature, his eyes narrowed, but he remained silent for a moment. Then, suddenly, an ear-piercing roar echoed from the distance, shaking the ground beneath them. Elliot immediately tensed, his eyes widening in alert. “Their companions are here! We need to leave, now!” Before anyone could respond, the roaring continued, growing louder and closer. The sound reverberated throughout the temple, a symphony of monstrous growls that seemed to surround them, coming from every direction. “Run!” Caleb shouted, turning and dashing toward one of the temple’s passages. The four of them immediately split up, running in different directions as fast as they could. But just a few moments later, an even more ferocious roar followed them, reverberating in the very walls of the temple, making the ground tremble as if some enormous creature was chasing them. Isla looked over her shoulder, her heart pounding in her chest — and what she saw made her blood run cold. Several more monsters had emerged from the darkness, their eyes glowing yellow, their jaws parted to reveal sharp teeth. “They’re catching up!” Jason yelled, increasing his pace. But in the chaos, they became separated. The once-close group of four was now scattered, each of them running frantically in different directions. Jason and Miguel veered left, while Isla and Caleb were forced to turn right. The darkness around them seemed to close in, the howling of the monsters growing louder with every step. It was as if the very walls of the temple were alive, and the monsters were pouring in from every angle. “Isla! Caleb! Look ahead!” Jason’s voice rang out distantly, but it was filled with fear. “We have to find them!” Isla shouted, her eyes scanning the shadows, desperately hoping to catch a glimpse of Jason or Miguel. But everything was a blur, and she couldn’t see anything clearly. Caleb tightened his grip on her arm. “Stay focused, don’t get distracted.” Suddenly, a creature lunged from the darkness, its speed terrifying. Its mouth gaped wide, fangs flashing as it charged toward them. Caleb quickly tackled the beast, sending it crashing to the ground. But before they could catch their breath, more monsters appeared, flooding out of the shadows. Caleb and Isla had no time to react as they dodged and ran, desperate to escape. They had no idea where they were going, only that they had to keep moving. The roar of the monsters echoed all around them, and every step seemed to bring more creatures toward them. Caleb’s voice was calm but urgent. “Keep running!” Their path split again, and Isla found herself running alone, with Caleb just a few meters ahead. The shadows seemed to close in on all sides. Suddenly, they heard the distinct sound of more footsteps — monstrous and heavy, growing louder with every passing second. The monsters were closing in. In the panic and chaos, they lost all sense of direction. They were separated, their voices lost in the roar of the creatures, each person running desperately to escape the maze-like temple. The once small group was now fragmented, scattering in different directions. And with each passing moment, Isla felt the terrifying reality of the situation. The temple was not just a place of mystery; it was a trap. And the creatures were its relentless guardians. Isla’s breath quickened, and her heart raced as she ran, unsure whether she would ever see her friends again.
