Chapter 17

The Hidden Underground River After the explosion, the chaos in the temple hall was overwhelming. The thick dust hung in the air, obscuring vision, and the sound of cracking stone echoed from the walls. Isla and Jason quickly found each other in the debris-filled space, their hearts racing with adrenaline. “Are you okay?” Isla asked, glancing around, her voice tight with worry. Jason gave a quick nod, wiping dust from his forehead. “I’m fine. But we need to move. This place is falling apart.” Isla hesitated for a moment, concern flickering in her eyes. “What about Caleb? Shouldn’t we go find him?” Jason shook his head dismissively. “Caleb will be fine. He knows what he’s doing. He’s more prepared than either of us.” His voice was calm, but there was a hardness in it. “He’s dealt with worse.” Isla didn’t argue. She trusted Caleb, but the explosion had left her uneasy. The whole temple felt unstable now, and they needed to find a way out—or something that could help them make sense of all the madness. “Alright,” she said, her mind quickly shifting to their next steps. “We need to get out of here. But which way? The temple’s collapsing.” Jason nodded in agreement. “I know a way.” They quickly moved toward the far side of the hall, where an old wooden door had partially collapsed. As they pushed through the wreckage, Isla noticed a narrow passage behind the debris. The air grew cooler as they stepped into it, and the dampness in the air intensified. The temperature seemed to drop even more, the stale scent of mildew and wet stone enveloping them. “This way,” Jason urged, leading her deeper into the passage. They walked for what seemed like hours, the silence between them broken only by the occasional drip of water echoing off the stone walls. The passage was tight and winding, and Isla could feel her muscles aching as they continued. Suddenly, the path opened up into a cavernous space. Isla’s flashlight caught the glint of something golden—glittering decorations and intricate jewelry, scattered throughout the floor and walls, glimmering faintly in the dim light. It looked like treasure, but Isla knew better than to be distracted by it now. “This place is… unreal,” Isla muttered, eyes wide as she scanned the surroundings. Gold, statues, and strange relics lay everywhere. It was as if someone had lived here, hoarding wealth for centuries. Jason stepped forward, picking up a golden amulet and turning it over in his hands. “This doesn’t make sense. This shouldn’t be here.” Isla was about to ask what he meant when she noticed something else—a large altar, at the far end of the cavern. It was massive, almost unnaturally so, and covered in ancient carvings. The walls surrounding the altar were adorned with murals—dozens of them, all faded but still visible in the flickering beam of Isla’s flashlight. “What is this place?” Isla whispered, her voice carrying a sense of awe. She stepped closer to the altar, her flashlight illuminating the intricate designs on the walls. Jason remained silent, his expression serious. He followed her cautiously, clearly aware of how dangerous the situation was, but even he couldn’t help but be drawn to the murals. Isla’s gaze locked on the images, her mind racing to understand them. The murals depicted figures that seemed to shift and change with each passing moment, figures who appeared human, but with unsettling features. There were scenes of rituals—some involving the offerings of strange objects, others showing terrifying monsters that Isla had never seen before. One image seemed to show a being with multiple eyes, and others with faces twisted in agony. Her heart skipped a beat as she realized that the murals were telling a story. The story of the creatures, of the temple, and perhaps… of the temple’s creators. “Look at this,” Isla whispered, pointing to one mural in particular. It showed a large figure surrounded by others, with symbols and markings on their bodies. The figure seemed to be raising its hands in a command, and the others were bowing before it, offering what appeared to be gold and strange artifacts. At the bottom of the image, written in an ancient script, were words Isla couldn’t read. Jason stepped closer, peering over her shoulder. “This… this is a ritual. An offering to something. Maybe to those creatures.” Isla’s thoughts raced. The pieces were starting to come together. “But why here? And why now?” Jason shook his head, frustration evident in his eyes. “I don’t know, but I think we’ve just uncovered something much bigger than we realized.” Isla continued to study the murals, her mind piecing together what little she understood. The figures in the paintings appeared to be worshiping the creatures, but there was more to the story. Something was being hidden—perhaps the key to understanding the monsters or even the temple itself. “This isn’t just an ancient temple,” Isla murmured, more to herself than anyone else. “This is… a prison. A place where something was kept. And now it’s escaping.” Suddenly, the ground beneath them rumbled. A distant roar echoed through the cavern, sending a chill down Isla’s spine. “What was that?” she asked, her voice tight with panic. Jason’s eyes widened. “I think we’ve overstayed our welcome.” The roar was followed by another, and this time it was much closer. The air around them grew thick with tension. “We need to move, Isla. Now.” Isla turned, but before they could make a move, the shadows around them seemed to shift. Something was coming. The roar grew louder, closer, until it was almost deafening. The monsters, or whatever they were, were closing in. “Run!” Jason shouted, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward the far end of the cavern. They needed to escape—whatever was coming, they couldn’t face it now. Isla’s mind raced as they sprinted through the dark, the echo of their footsteps mingling with the distant, ominous sounds of the creatures that were closing in. She had no idea how they would survive this, but one thing was certain—their time in the temple was far from over.
