Chapter 13 The Depths of the Temple They stood in the dim light, surrounded by silence, the air thick with an ominous heaviness. Behind that stone door lay secrets unknown, and with every step forward, it felt as if their courage was being slowly drained. As they ventured deeper into the temple, the space grew more complex, with countless branching paths stretching out in every direction. The walls were covered in ancient carvings and totems, telling stories of a time long past. “This place is… unnerving.” Isla whispered, her voice echoing off the cold stone walls. A strange feeling of dread settled over her, as if unseen eyes were watching them from the shadows. Jason followed closely behind her, his face still composed, but there was a subtle unease in his movements. Unlike Isla, he wasn’t as shaken by the ancient aura of the temple. Instead, a heavier doubt filled his thoughts—what secrets was the temple hiding? Were they truly prepared to uncover them? “Shall we split up?” Miguel’s voice broke the silence, his finger pointing to two diverging paths ahead. Each seemed to lead deeper into the temple’s mysteries. “We might find clues faster this way.” “Don’t forget, unity is key,” Caleb’s voice was calm but carried a hint of tension. “We don’t know what’s waiting down those paths. It’s better to stick together.” Isla nodded in agreement and turned to Elliot, her curiosity about him growing. He remained silent as usual, his expression unreadable, his eyes scanning their surroundings with quiet attention. She didn’t ask, knowing everyone had their own secrets. “We’ll take this path first.” Isla decided, pointing to the broader passageway ahead. “Stay alert. Don’t let your guard down.” As they cautiously advanced, the air grew heavier, filled with the musty smell of decay, the ground covered in thick dust. Every step they took echoed loudly, breaking the unnatural stillness. The walls were adorned with cryptic symbols, and as Isla gazed at them, a sense of unease crept over her. These carvings seemed to pulse with life, telling stories she couldn’t yet understand. Suddenly, a low rumble of sound drifted from behind them, echoing like a distant murmur. The noise wasn’t from any of them but seemed to emanate from the very depths of the temple. “Did you hear that?” Jason whispered, his gaze darting over his shoulder. “Yes,” Caleb halted and scanned the area, his eyes narrowing. There was an unsettling stillness in his demeanor, but his alertness was clear. “It’s… a whispering.” “The whispers…” Isla’s voice trembled. She clutched the torch tighter. “What is it? Who’s speaking?” The sound continued to echo, faint but growing clearer as they moved. It wasn’t a voice, not one that could be identified, but a constant murmuring, like the temple itself was speaking—beckoning them toward something unknown. Every step they took made the whispers louder, yet there was an ominous quality to them, urging them onward. “They’re guiding us.” Elliot’s voice broke through the growing tension, his tone calm but filled with unspoken knowledge. He stared ahead, eyes shadowed with some secret understanding. “The closer we get, the clearer they become.” “You think we should follow them?” Miguel asked, his brow furrowed with concern. “No, don’t follow them.” Caleb’s voice cut through sharply. He glanced around, unease flickering in his eyes. “If something is trying to guide us, it’s not good. Trust your instincts.” They continued forward, the whispers slowly fading as they ventured deeper, but the sense of foreboding only grew stronger. The air felt thick, like the very walls were closing in on them, and the pressure in the space intensified with every step. They eventually entered a large, open hall, its center dominated by a massive altar. Above it, aged statues loomed, their eyes eerily fixated on the intruders, an unspoken judgment hanging in the air. “What is this place?” Isla murmured, scanning the surroundings. Caleb moved toward the altar, studying the symbols etched into its surface. “This is a sacrificial hall. It was once used for ancient rituals. These symbols are not of any god I know… they point to something else, something far older.” Jason moved to the side of the hall, stopping suddenly. He pointed to a hidden stone door. “There’s another exit here. It might lead deeper.” They decided to move forward, towards the stone door. Despite the unsettling atmosphere, no one hesitated. “Look at this,” Miguel suddenly called out, his voice filled with awe. He pointed to a carving on the wall. The carving depicted a monstrous creature, its jaws wide open, as though ready to devour everything in its path. “This… this isn’t any totem we’ve seen before,” Isla said, her voice tinged with confusion. “This isn’t part of Incan mythology.” “No.” Caleb’s voice dropped to a low, tense whisper. “This is something far older than the Incas. This is something else entirely.” They moved deeper, the pressure of the temple’s atmosphere thickening, and a sense of something watching them grew more pronounced with every step. Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet trembled, and an ominous growl echoed throughout the temple. “A monster!” Jason shouted. The growl grew louder, the sound of heavy footsteps approaching from all sides, as though the entire temple was preparing for the arrival of something terrifying.
