“You showed him your powers? Do you have any idea what is going to happen now?” she says in a panicked voice. She starts pacing and fidgeting. She starts whispering something I couldn’t hear.
I knew she was scared and it was my fault. So I took off. I ran faster than I ever have, and I pushed to go faster. I ran for what felt like ever. I ran until I tripped on something and face planted into a tree. I had been crying while I was running. I look up at the sky finally being able to see after the fall. It was dark.
There were no stars shinning, no lights for me to tell my way back. So I laid there. I laid there and I thought about Taugue. I thought about my mom. I thought about how better everything will be for them now that I’m gone and I can’t mess anything up. I thought about how I would live my life now. I know I’ll never be able to have children because I won’t want them to have to deal with the same problems as I have.
Suddenly, I smell something. I can’t figure out where its coming from. I start to smell another sent. Both are familiar. I stand up and try to hide behind the tree but they are coming from both sides. I’m trapped.
“Shae!” I hear my mom and Taugue yell. I come out from behind the tree and run into my moms arms. Neither of the smells were theirs. Mom holds me for a few minutes when I feel Taugue put his hand on my back. I lift my head up and the smells have become stronger. Taugue and mom begin to sniff the air and start growling.
As I look around at the trees, I feel the urge to look up, so I do and there sits a black panther on a limb. it looks like it's smiling at me. I stand there and stare at it for a few minutes I sense it's a were-cat but I'm unsure of what gender. The were-cat gets up, stretches, then bounds back through the trees away from us. After the tension settles we begin walking back through the trees in silence until we get back to the cabin. No one says anything for the longest time. After what seems like hours of sitting in silence other than the sounds of shuffling, food preparation, and eating someone finally speaks.
"I think it's time we leave here and get back on our way." My mom says.
