Chapter 3

Kiera pov Well here it is. s**t. I didn’t want to have to tell her any of this. I’d have kept this from her forever if it meant she’d be happier and less burdened. I feel horrible for having to be the one to tell her everything. I sighed I know she deserves to know, here goes nothing. I hope she’ll forgive me. “Oli. You were bullied growing up by your entire class because you’re only half wolf and the other half of you is a witch, as you may already be aware. What you may not remember is that the boy that bullied you most turned 18 before all of us and publicly rejected you in the cafeteria on his 18th birthday, in front of everyone. Ailia went back to her homeland at the time to attend a funeral, so as you might have guessed, we kept this to ourselves. You didn’t want Ailia or her mom feeling sorry for us and it may have even embarrassed you, being rejected and unwanted by your mate, the one person in this world other than family that’s supposed to love us most. It hurt physically, not just emotionally and while I feel bad that your memories were erased, I’m also thankful that you can’t recall how painful that was. You dropped to the ground in pain, causing our entire lunch tray to drop all over us on the way down. We didn’t see it coming, he did it as soon as he walked into the cafeteria. He wanted an audience. He found out you were his mate during homeroom and cornered you in the hallway, demanding to know if it was a spell or enchantment to make it seem like we’re his mate. You told him no but he didn’t believe you, he grabbed our neck hard and was dangling us by our throat. He probably would have killed us if he hadn’t heard a teacher coming and dropped us.” I could feel Oli’s anger rising. “Oli, I can stop for now if you need a break” I could feel her clenching our fist as she replied “No. Continue, I’ll be alright”. I sighed “I offered to rip this boy’s throat out once we learned to shift and you said no because we have bigger things to deal with”. She asked “Could he be the person trying to have us abducted?” I replied “He’s definitely a suspect. He’s got the money and motive. Motive being revenge against us for us being his mates and him feeing that it’s unfair”. She took some time to process this information and asked “I’m sure that’s not all. What else have I forgotten?” I asked “About our school days or in general?” She replied “Both. I want to know everything so we can be prepared as best as we can for whatever is trying to get to us”. I agree, that would be the best idea, despite how hard this is. “These bullies had peers try to fakely befriend us, they wanted to use whatever they could find out about us against us, but we never trusted them enough to let any of them in. Our school days were pretty awful, they’d dump food on us, spill drinks on us, trip us so we’d fall in mud or on occasion they’d toss us in the huge smelly cafeteria trash bins. When we had to get changed in the locker rooms, they would steal our clothes or shoes, they’d toss us in the shower stall and run the cold water only or sometimes the hot water only. A few times girls would grab us and force us head first into a toilet. It was bad, they were especially heinous around our birthday and had no compassion when mom went missing, they used it as another means to torture us. You never let it bother you. As long as they left Ailia alone, you dealt with it. You never wanted Ailia to feel the same way we have.” Olette sat quietly, so I continued “You name it and they’ve probably done it to us because of our mixture. They’ve called us a mutt and reminded us that we weren’t good enough to sit within their presence. What they are unaware of is that they’ve got it backwards. They’re not good enough for us.” Olette sat confused “What do you mean?” A grin curled at the corners of my mouth “What I mean is that you have royal blood. Your grandfather on your father’s side is a king of a distant territory. Your dad fell in love with the most powerful sorceress of their time. Your grandfather wasn’t having it. He told your father that he could either leave your mother and ascend to the throne or remain with your mother and be banished as a rogue if he defied your grandfather. Your father deeply loved your mother, she was his mate. Most packs welcome other creatures that are mates of a full blood wolf, but being royalty, the creatures if the current reigning king or a king’s board of trustees decides against permitting the union. Your grandfather doesn’t have a board of trustees, but he has always had a ridiculously high standard for your father. Your father chose to accept his mate, married her and was outcast as a rogue. He became the leader of the rogues but changed. He was no longer the man that your mom had married and she left him. I don’t know if she broke the mate bond but I do know he scared her. She fled with you ad a toddler and then disappeared on your 17th birthday.” Olette asked “He’s another suspect then? If we’re going to assume he tried to take me but got her instead, he could be dangerous and evil. She could be dead or imprisoned”. I don’t like the idea that he’d do that to mom and with my gut in my throat I replied “Yes, that is a possibility”. Olette curiously asked “Hold on, if we’ve got royal blood, how are you not a lycan?” Ah. The question of the hour. “We’re not a high ranking member of a royal pack. We’re technically rogues, not your fault of course. We didn’t do anything to earn our title of rogue”. I don’t know how to reassure her. I can feel her unsettled feelings about everything and they’re valid. I hope she knows I’d fight our father if it came down to it. I’ll do whatever I need to do to protect us. Olette pov Holy sheesh, what the hell?! How? How does one person have so many things get f****d up in succession like this?! Just one right after another from before I was even born. Maybe I’m just a mistake. Maybe I shouldn’t even be here. I’m a danger to those I care about, just by existing and I’m unwanted by everyone else. I can’t let any harm come to momma witch and Ailia, it would be my fault if they got hurt or killed because of me. I’ll attend the ball like momma witch wants, but after that I think I’ll disappear, I don’t know. I shouldn’t burden or endanger the people I care about most. If I didn’t have Kiera, I’d probably cease to exist entirely, but I can’t do that to her. Maybe going into hiding won’t be so bad. I can backpack around with tents and live wherever I roam. I can make enchantments to keep others from picking up my scent and keep to myself. Yeah, this could work. “Oli? Are you alright? You got quiet”. I sheepishly replied “hm? Oh, um. No, I’m fine, just a little tired and trying to process everything. Our father’s a suspect, our ex mate is a suspect. It’s good that we’re forming an idea of what to expect so we can protect ourselves. Since Ailia and Momma witch don’t know about us being rejected, how are we going to get into a pack without finding a mate?” Kiera replies “We have to keep hope that an alpha and luna will have compassion and take pity on our circumstances”. I ask “Won’t we just be endangering them and their pack?” Kiera sternly growls a reply “No. You will study and I will train our body. We will show them what the daughter of the most powerful sorceress and royal wolven blood is capable of and we won’t back down. You are royal and powerful and if you forget this for even one second, I will keep reminding you until you believe it and feel it in your heart. We won’t take s**t from anyone. Listen well young witch, we have always been good enough. We have always been deserving of love and respect and we will accept nothing less. Do you understand me?” I hesitantly answered “I-I guess so. I don’t want to be a bother to others though”. Kiera snarled “Be a bother, grow the same audacity that others had when they tormented us all throughout school and the attempted kidnappings. Take up space and remind them that we matter, regardless of our species or intermix species. We are living, breathing beings that deserve and demand respect”. Ailia pov I walked out of the study to get a drink of tea as I desperately need a break from my studies. As I walked through the living room, I noticed a large bubble and Olette at the center of it, with her eyes flickering between red and blue. I muttered to myself “What in the blue bloody toads is this?” I stopped for a moment, staring at this large bubble and decided to poke it. It was rather firm. I shrugged it off and went to make my tea. This wasn’t the weirdest thing I’ve seen. As I’m making my tea, that reminds me, I do need to talk with Olette alone. Something weird has been going on and it feels like the energy around us is a bit off, for lack of a better way of putting it. I sit down to have my tea and stare at that large bubble in the living room. I wonder if she can see me. They must be having one giant chat for how long this is going on. I’d love to know what that bubble is about. I wonder if it’s able to pop. I finish my tea while lost in some thoughts, then place my cup in the sink and go to pass back through the living room on my way back to the study. Midway through the living room I pause, staring at this giant bubble, still wondering how impenetrable it is. So I picked up a book from the shelf behind me and threw it at the bubble, thinking the corners will likely burst it. Nope. I was wrong. That book bounced off the bubble and launched right at my head “Ow!” Crikey that hurt. I picked the book back up and put it on the shelf again. Mum peeked her head out of her room “Are you alright dear? I heard a shout”. Great, add embarrassment on top of injury. “I’m fine mum, I threw a book at this bubble and it bounced back to hit me in the head”. Mum shrugged “Ah well, play stupid games, win stupid prizes dear. Maybe don’t throw things at a—-dear, did you say a bubble?” I nodded and mum swiftly came to look. “Oh goodness. Look at those two in there.” I looked at mum confused “Did they do this intentionally?” Mum looked over the bubble and touched it. “I don’t think so dear, I’m not sure if they know it’s here. They must be having a conversation to bring Olette back up to speed on what she’s forgotten. This bubble, hm. I haven’t seen an unconscious one since—-her mum. Ooo dear she’s stepping into her powers more. How exciting! I best be off. I need to finish a few things before I make dinner. You best move along too, your studies won’t get learnt by themselves”. I replied “Aye mum, I will”. I know she’s right but couldn’t she be kinder towards my injury? I’ve got a wee headache now. Off I walked back towards the study. Kiera pov This girl. Nobody cared when her feelings were hurt. Nobody cared when she was pacing the floor. Nobody cared when she was sliding down the wall or standing there with a face full of tears. She had to suck it up and now she’s over here wanting to walk on eggshells, tiptoeing around everyone else and their feelings, trying to avoid the elephant in the room with this bullshit of not wanting to upset anyone or burden anyone. Where was this consideration for her or her feelings? No, we’re not doing that. She might be soft and gentle, but that’s about to change, even if I have to be the one in control of us sometimes. We are not a doormat and we will not tolerate the disrespect that we’ve been shown up to this point. I’ll do what I have to do to show others that we are not the same scared girl afraid to stand up for ourselves. I will make sure others know that we will match their respect, but let them come at us sideways and we will top their disrespect or rip their throat out. We are royal blood and won’t accept less than respect. That is the bare minimum. “Oli, there’s one more thing” I can hear Olette groan, I can tell she’s close to her breaking point. “This part isn’t bad actually. We have been lovers on and off with Ailia for a while. We’re not mates with her but we do seem to share a mutual love for one another” she nearly shouted “What?!” I smiled, I could feel her blushing. “I think she’s feeling sad because your memories of it all were taken again and you two had just gotten back on track in your relationship”. Olette paused “My memory being erased, is that the cause of us being on and off? Is my memory lapse why we haven’t been together?” I sighed “Mostly. It’s also been because neither of you are willing to tell momma witch. She’d quickly put the pieces of your teen years together and I do not want to be attached to you for that ass whooping. No ma’am. You two break things off and act like the best friends you’ve always been. She knows you two aren’t destined for one another, but she does care about you very much and wants to make sure you’re safe—-and happy” Olette replied “I guess I have a lot of work ahead of me”. I agreed “Yes WE do. Don’t forget about me girly. Don’t count me out. I’m part of you and I’ll be right here with you til the end of the line. Trust me and trust your instincts. This memory loss is just a momentary set back. Ready to get back to our studies?” “There’s nothing else earth shatteringly serious we need to discuss right at this moment is there?” I chuckled “No ma’am”. Olette’s expression became serious “Lets do this then”. Just then as I shifted control back, it looked like glass shattered in front of us, but there was nothing on the floor. “Uhhhh What the hell was that?” Olette gets up and inspects the floor but finds nothing. “I’m not too sure. Lets go ask momma witch if she might know”. We walk off towards momma witch’s guest room and knock on the door. Mum pov I can hear their privacy bubble shatter. They must be finished. I expect the shatter startled them. I smiled, Olette really is a sweet young girl. There was a knock at my door “Come in Olette”. The door opens as she stands there looking confused. “How did you—“. I interrupted her “Well come on, come inside. Close the door, and your jaw as well. I heard your privacy bubble burst, so I assumed it startled you both. You don’t seem aware of casting it”. Olette shakes her head. “I didn’t even know I could—“. I say “Yes dear, I figured as much. It was pretty solid too. Ailia threw a book and it bounced back at her with a fair amount of force”. Olette was trying so hard to hold in a laugh. It was hard to maintain my composure seeing how hard she was struggling to suppress her laughter. “There are a lot of subconscious spell castings you can do when you need them most. This is the most common one. Don’t be alarmed dears. It is perfectly normal. It shattered when your conversation ended, didn’t it?” Olette nodded. “There you have it. To answer your next question, no, no wolf has ever done a witch’s magic and for your last question, no, you can’t summon a familiar.” Olette started “But I—“ I interrupted saying “I understand but dear, you are no ordinary witch. You are the daughter of a very powerful sorceress. Your familiar cannot be summoned. Only the tree of life can pass down a familiar to an enchantress as powerful as your bloodline is”. Olette stood there with her mouth open looking like she was waiting to catch flies. “Please dear, close your jaw. Your mother knew she was going to be taken shortly before it happened. She teleported to the tree of life and explained the situation, asking if she would be permitted to hand me your familiar since she would be unable to teleport you to the tree to pass on the family rite of passage. She explained you’d never be able to locate it for teleportation on your own without a familiar or parent to guide you. The tree took special consideration to her request after reviewing prophecies that are yet to come to fruition and the tree granted her request. The tree gave her an egg seemingly made of wood, she doesn’t remember hers ever looking like that. The tree is capable of communicating in a witch’s mind and it had told her “looks can be deceiving, do not judge by what you see”. It had told your mother that you are very special indeed and that your familiar is one that has never existed before, because you are destined for great things. Whether they are evil or good things rests within your heart, but whichever you choose, they will be great feats. Choose your path wisely. Vengeance can darken ones heart”. I handed Olette the wooden egg that looked like it had branches forming a nest around a wooden scaly egg. Unique indeed. She looked at the egg and then looked at me, once again with her mouth half hanging open and asked “um. Not to seem ungrateful or rude, but um, what do I do with it? How do I—“ I sighed “Dear, I can’t figure that out for you. The tree said you’re the only one that would know how to find your familiar within this and you’re the only one that may possess or control it. Try sitting with it, show it your heart. Good luck”. I ushered them out of my room so that I may finish what I was doing. That silly girl, I don’t have all of her answers and can’t do everything for her. She needs to just try. Olette pov What the hell?! Did she just close the door on us? What do I do with this egg looking thing attached to a birds nest?! Show it my heart? I don’t think I can physically take my heart from my chest and live. “Oli, do you have any idea what she means?” I sighed and turned to walk back to the living room. “f****d if I know. I don’t have a damn clue”. Kiera sighed “Great, what now?” I shrugged. “I guess we try to figure this out”. I sat down on the couch and saw it this time. “Kiera?” She woke up and said “There’s a bubble?? No s**t kid, you have a privacy bubble. Ailia always did joke that she wished she could put you in a bubble for your own safety, but holy s**t. This is wild. Can we touch it?” I thought about it “Probably not. It would likely burst when we stand up”. Kiera groaned “That’s no fun.” Hmm what do we do with this thing? I tried lighting a flame in my hand, nothing. Blue flame, nothing. I knocked on the egg, hugged the egg, tried saying “open sesame”. None of it was working. Show it my heart. What does that mean? I sat there trying anything I could think of for literal hours. Finally, I wrapped my blanket around it and Kiera chimed in “What if you just ask it to come out?” I sat in silence for a second “It couldn’t be that easy”. Kiera replied “Intention is desire and desire comes from your heart. So give it a try. Oh! And remember to say please”. This is going to feel ridiculous but here goes nothing. “Hey in there, can you come out please?” There was silence. Kiera sighed “Ah well, it was worth a shot”. I picked up the egg and suddenly I felt a vibration “Oli, what’s going on?” I said “I guess we’re about to find out”. Suddenly the branches that were interlocking and intertwined began to relax and undo themselves, revealing a——BABY DRAGON?! Both Kiera and I went “uh oh” at the same time. I’ve never heard of a familiar’s true form being a dragon. “Kiera, what’s Ailia and momma witch’s familiar’s true forms?” She thought about that “I don’t remember momma witch’s familiar’s true form but Ailia’s is an owl” I looked over at the sleeping little black dragon and petted it. It has a gorgeous sharp blue and red under belly and pads of its feet. The black was sparkly and shiny over its scales. “Hey little one! I’m Olette and my wolf is Kiera, we’re so glad you came out to join us”. Suddenly the baby dragon’s eye opened one at a time, it stretched, yawned and breathed out a puff of smoke. Suddenly another voice joined our mind “Hiya! I’m Kipper but please call me Kip. I’ve been asleep a long time waiting for you. You’re finally here! Thanks for asking so nicely for me to come out, you have a kind heart, despite everything you’ve been through—-wow you’re also a she wolf, wow. I’ve never met a wolf witch. Kiera, right? You are simply dazzling, look at your gorgeous self. Oh my!” Kiera smiled “It’s nice to meet you too Kip, you’ve got some sharp colors yourself”. These two are hitting it off, that’s amazing. “Nice to meet you Kip, can all witches communicate like this with their familiars?” Kip zoomed over by my side of our mind “Nopers. You are the only of your kind. A witch can summon a familiar in their mind if they know how, but it’s like a one way radio if that makes sense but because you have this gorgeous beauty in here, we can communicate back and forth in here like this, despite me being on the outside of your mind and not part of you like Kiera is. Kiera and I can both understand other familiars and bond with them if you are close to their masters. You are my master and I only obey you, the caveat to that is that in a moment of peril, I will also listen to Kiera if you are unable to communicate, but your word takes precedence over hers”. Kiera chimed in saying “Sweet!” Kip nodded in agreement. “How may I server you?” I have so many questions! “Kip, do you get to stay this size forever or does your true form grow?” Kip happily replied “Excellent question. On your 18th birthday I will be able to switch between my adult form and this one at will. My adult form will only be accessible once you’re an adult as well, however I’d caution you not to ask me to turn into my adult form within the house as I am bigger than this house”. Holy smokes! That’s huge. “Fair enough”. Kip continued “I can also turn into inanimate objects, such as a hat or a cane if you desire. I eat mostly fruits and vegetables but I can have whatever you’re eating. I am allergic to all forms of seafood however, but I’m guessing you are as well” I nodded. “Kip, do you have any other special talents or abilities?” Kip smiled “My skills and abilities will grow and evolve depending on how strong of a witch you are, any talents you choose to bestow upon me and the needs of a circumstance. As you know, I can shape shift, but I can also become invisible when asked to. Your commands don’t need to be spoken aloud, we can all have a nice discussion in here whenever you’d like. My mind is permanently linked to you both. I will sense when you’re in danger and be able to find you in an emergency, not that I will stray far unless you ask me to. Watch this”. Kip went from sitting in my arm to shrinking himself into a tiny dragon, crawling around my wrist and turned into a bracelet, it was gorgeous. Then kip went invisible. I could still feel him but could not see him. Kiera was so excited “Oli, look, look at that! That’s amazing!” I could feel her excitedly dancing around. Kip then crawled back into my palm and changed back into his true form. “Kip you are truly an impressive dragon. Thank you for choosing me. Is there anything else I need to know so I can care for you properly?” Kip pondered the question, then said “You can ask me anything and I will answer as best as I can. I can feel both of your emotions and you will also sense mine. I think that’s all for right now—-WHOA! Did you make that reinforced privacy bubble just for me? That’s astounding!” Kip hops off my hand and pokes the bubble “Solid work!” Kiera whined “Why does he get to touch it?!” I smiled “Because he has his own corporeal body, you are part of me, remember?” Kiera groaned. Kip ran back over and hopped back into my hand just as Ailia came into the living room from the kitchen. “I think it’s dinner time, are we ready to go?” Kip nodded. I stood up and the bubble shattered. Ailia watched it shatter and moved to avoid the nonexistent shards. “Goodness! I thought I was going to get shrapnel in my arms and face from that. Dinner’s ready—hang on. Is that your familiar? Is this their primary form??” She asked with her eyes wide like marbles. “Yep, his name is Kip”. I telepathically asked Kip “Hey Kip, can you go shake her hand and come back?” Kip nodded, I placed him on the floor, he walked over as she bent down and said “Hi wee one, I’m Ailia”. Kip shook her hand, then flew back to my palm. “Oli, what’s their name?” I replied “His name’s Kip.” Ailia replied “Aye, it suits him, what an adorable little guy. Come, lets go eat. I bet you all are starving”. I walked into the kitchen towards the table to see momma witch with her back to all of us while she filled up her glass at the water and ice dispenser on the fridge. She was humming a tune that no one knew but still felt familiar. I thought a lot about her words over the past few hours, there’s never been a familiar like Kip before. Did other enchantresses share one familiar? Did they all have similar familiars? So many questions swirled around in my mind. Why was this one so special? Id it because I’m mixed and we can communicate in my mind? Momma witch finished filling up her glass and turned around. She dropped her glass and stopped humming abruptly when she noticed Kip sitting in the palm of my hand sweetly.
