CHAPTER TEN The abandoned docks of New York City were quiet and eerie tonight. Thick clouds hung in the sky overhead, leaving little room for the moon and stars to shine. Abandoned warehouses, docks, and ships were scattered everywhere, and the whole place smelled of a mixture of seaweed, sewage, and garbage. There were no lights on in any of the buildings, in sharp contrast to the rest of New York, which was ablaze with light, but Bait sensed that just because the lights weren’t on did not mean that the buildings were uninhabited. This was hardly the place for a teenager—superhuman or otherwise—to be, yet Bait found himself here nonetheless, walking down the main boardwalk, his Blood Gem glowing softly in the chest compartment of his costume.
