Chapter 17: Shadows of the Truth
But even in the chaos, one thought consumed him:
Was he too late?
Dante scooped Isabella into his arms, his heart pounding against his ribs. She was unconscious, her face pale, beads of sweat clinging to her forehead. His throat tightened as he barked orders.
“Get the car ready now!” he shouted to the nearest guard, his voice sharper than a blade.
Maria hurried beside him. “Should I call the family doctor, sir?”
“No. The hospital. I want full tests run on her.”
Because deep down, Dante wasn’t just afraid for Isabella’s health — he feared what he might discover.
Within minutes, they were racing through the city streets, the car weaving through traffic, sirens wailing in the distance. Dante cradled Isabella’s limp form in the backseat, brushing strands of hair from her clammy face.
“Stay with me, Isabella,” he whispered, the vulnerability in his voice surprising even himself.
At the hospital, doctors rushed her inside. Dante paced the waiting area, his jaw clenched, fists balled. He hated feeling powerless. The minutes stretched like hours.
Then, finally, a doctor approached, clipboard in hand.
“Mr. Romano?” the doctor said cautiously.
Dante snapped his head up. “What is it? Is she okay?”
“She’s stable now. But… there’s something you should know.”
Dante’s stomach twisted. “Out with it.”
The doctor hesitated before glancing at the chart. “Miss Isabella is approximately six weeks pregnant.”
The words struck Dante like a gunshot.
Pregnant?
His thoughts spiraled.
Was it his? Could it be Ethan’s?
A thousand emotions warred inside him — anger, confusion, a strange flicker of hope.
But one thing was clear.
His grip tightened on his phone. He had proof of Isabella’s betrayal. Photos, recordings. Evidence.
And yet…
he couldn’t bring himself to destroy her now.
Not carrying his child. Or even if it wasn’t.
Not like this.
