Ranveer's Point Of View: I felt the carpet below my feet move away. I stared at him in shock. "What?!", I asked in complete astonishment. "Yes, son.", He said softly looking away. "Even I have done it.. you can just walk two steps and move away. It will be considered. I did the same.", He said as I looked at him as if he was some kind of alien. I nodded slowly, "Fine. When do I have to do this?", I asked feeling fright creep into me for the first time. "Today evening.", Came the reply. "Fine.", I said walking back into the room alloted to us. It was not that difficult though, but it seemed a little scary definitely. "I think you-", Devika had just begun when I cut her off. "I think I do not need your useless suggestion.", I shot at her as she stood quietly. Soon the much anticipated part of the day, evening arrived. I could say that the number of people in the place were much more than I had expected. Devika was wearing a saree looking as irresistible as ever. Those villagers had made me wear a dhoti and a long cotton kurta to give the traditional feel. There was a rectangular path dug in the ground with burning coal on it, it hoped that it was cooling down although it did not seem so. Hot smoke was rising as I felt goosebumps on my skin. I felt scared but not enough to back out. I had to do it. I turned towards Devika who looked at me scared. I carefully lifted her in my arms as I slowly stepped on the hot coal. It was piercing. Tears started running down my eyes but I was determined. After all I was a gangster, I could do it! My feet felt so much in pain that I felt I would faint any moment. Devika's Point Of View: I was lifted in his arms. Tears ran down his eyes as I felt the warmth on my back. I did not move. The pain he was going through was unbearable. "Leave it! It's okay, son. You don't need to walk anymore.", I heard the village headman say but Ranveer walked, his eyes shut, his face screwed up showcasing his pain. I could only look back at him. He completed the walk and slowly made me stand as he fell on his knees. His breath was fast and in deep pain. His feet was completely burnt as he finally yelled in pain. I knelt in front of him, holding up his face. His eyes had turned completely red in pain. "I did it!", He said with a smile of victory. I could only smile back at him. The villagers came up to us with appreciation in their eyes. A man bought a tube of burnoil to help him out. "Give it to me. ", I said taking the tube as he somehow moved away from the pit. I knelt near his burnt feet as I slowly applied the ointment. He growled in pain but did not move away. After a while he started breathing normally. "I fine..", he said slowly as I moved away. "Son, I have never seen this before. Your love is really true for her! Only the last ritual of this is left. No body ever has been able to complete it.", The headman's wife came up to him and said. She slowly handed him a small container with vermilion. I immediately went and knelt beside him as she slowly applied a thin line of it between my hair parting. His face was red and he had pain in his eyes but an incredible smile of victory on his tear smitted face. I could not take my eyes of. What was he? Why did he hurt himself just to prove that he can never be defeated? The answer instantly came to me.. He was a Gangster who had learnt never to lose. •••
