The mother who had cared for me all my life laid immobile in front of my eyes. Tears trickled down my eyes as I looked at her in shock. "She is gone, son.", A comforting voice said as he placed him hand on my shoulder. It was the uncle to who we were tenants. My mother had sucided. She had locked herself in our bed room. She had hung herself down from the ceiling fan and let herself die. I did not blame her. Her situation was too bad to live. I gulped nervously. I had no one to go to and nowhere to rest my head on. I had lost all that I had and was now nothing less than an orphan. "You are correct.", I said accepting the the truth. This was all because of him! My father who abandoned me and my mother for no valid reason, just because he fell in love with another woman. I turned and walked out of the hospital, there was no hope for me. I was alone in this wide world. I was walking along the road when I noticed a man running as people were running behind him with the chant, "Thief! Thief!" I immediately decided to catch hold of him with the hope that those people would give me something in return. I picked up a stone and started running behind him. I threw it at his felt and he fell on the pavement. The other people caught hold of him and snatched the bag from him. After a few punches and kicks from them he was left alone. Nobody noticed me. I just looked at him hoping someone would reward me, but no. They all left. "What did you get by doing this, huh?!", The thief said as he slowly stood up. "Nothing.", I replied softly again accepting the truth that I was completely worthless in this world. "You are sharp and quick. You will get what you deserve if you accompany me to my place. You need money, isn't it? I'll give you.", He said with a genuine smile. "But why?", I asked. "I'll make you a gangster if you come with me.", He replied I knew that it wasn't a very good profession to opt for but with nowhere to go, I didn't mind going with him. He took me to an isolated house. "My name is Raghu. By the way, you know what are gangster, I hope. That's what we are. Stealing bags is just an hobby, as gangsters we do much better things.", He said and turned on the lights. Although the house looked dead from outside, it was quite warm and good from within. "Just wait till Vinod sir arrives. ", He said as I sat on the sofa nearby. A man with a handsome countenance and heavily built body walked in. "Good evening sir.", Raghu said with a bow as he walked up to me. "Who is he?", He asked surveying me closely. "He is a new member to our team. Just the kind you wanted. Sharp and quick.", He said as I stood up while the man named Vinod looked at me closely. "You are right, Raghu.", He said as he raised his hand for a handshake towards me and said, "Welcome to the underworld, young man." I accepted his hand and the fact that I was now meant to be the man they wanted me to be. •••
