There was silence for a month, things seemed to be going well. The big gala event was coming close and my dress was delivered. It was a sterling silver mermaid dress with a modest neckline and plunging back, there was a slit on both sides for a seductive edge but nothing was too revealing. It looked like something modern royalty would wear and as I felt the soft, shimmering fabric on my body I felt transformed into a true princess.
Vincent smiled as he stood behind me, his eyes raking over me with appreciation as he settled his hands on my hips. I looked back at him through the full length mirror, he looked so dangerously handsome in his all black italian tailored suit, the only color he let grace his outfit was a sterling silver neck tie made of the same fabric as my dress. A personal touch he requested of Marion.
"You look like a goddess my darling, so mesmerizing I always don't want to let you out of my sight" his voice was low and possessive, his amber eyes glinting a hint of seriousness. I scrunched my face and he held me closer, chuckling softly. "I was just kidding Princess...mostly. I could never cage you. You deserve to fly as high as you want my dearest."
I smiled and leaned into him, his warmth enveloping me like a shroud of love and devotion before he pulled away and reached into his inner suit jacket pocket. He pulled out a long jewelry box and smiled.
Opening it I was stunned to see a diamond encrusted necklace with a heavy rain drop shaped sapphire surrounded by more darling diamonds. It was simple in design but every stone was flawless and expertly placed, it looked and felt priceless but Vincent shrugged at it as if it was a trinket he found on the fly.
"How could you be so nonchalant? This thing probably costs a house!"
He chuckled as he draped the delicate piece of jewelry across my throat, it complimented the neckline perfectly and popped against my warm complexion. Looking at myself again I couldn't find the same dowdy housewife Jonathon has crafted me into, I was someone with confidence and vitality. My skin was clear and bright, my eyes were full of life again and my hair had become shinier and cascaded in thick full waves. Everything had changed so much, so quickly.
Vincent watched my eyes as I took in this new vision of myself, a warm smile crept across his face.
"You were always beautiful my Princess. Now you see yourself as we have always seen you."
His words made my heart flutter as I smiled, tears of happiness reflecting in my eyes as I turned to face him directly.
Looking up at him I was still stunned by his devilish good looks and overall dangerous appeal. I enjoyed the overwhelming power he naturally exuded, knowing he'd never try to subdue me. Not forcefully. He was respectful and kind to me and I could ask for a better man.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him deeply, the sweet taste of his tongue on mine made me tingle all over. His hands wrapped possessively around my waist, pulling me tighter into him.
Before things could escalate though Veronica burst into the room. Her hair and face professionally done to match her burgundy red satin mermaid dress with shimmering gold accents, she reminded me of a fiery goddess. Her fierce eyes narrowed on us as she impatiently tapped her overpriced, one of a kind stilettos at us.
"Put it away! We have a show to go to! This is THE event, the one event every socialite attends, it's the place to make powerful connections and to debut yourself as a powerhouse with the elite!" She was fired up, eager to mingle and captivate the most powerful people in the world but Vincent and I didn't really care.
He went to this event to support me, usually his assistant attends in his stead but he wanted to be with me and secretly ward off other men. I was attending because of V's insistence and partly to show I'm not a broken housewife anymore. This was a big event for us for different reasons but that was fine, we all nodded and took our steps towards a new horizon.
The ride to the gala was full of Veronica scheming how to bring in more clients to her fashion based empire. Several of her clients would be present and her reputation on the line based on their success so she was abnormally chatty and fussy.
Once we got to the event I felt intimidated by the sheer splendor of it all. Everything down to the most minute detail was created to give an opulent, almost royal appearance.
Everyone with an invitation walked like gods amongst peasants as those of lesser status crowded behind red velvet rope manned by fierce looking guards, they watched with covetous eyes, many falling over each other just to catch a glimpse of those with untouchable status and wealth.
This was an event Jonathan often dreamed of attending but he was never high enough level, he was often too ambitious but lacked patience and he didn't know enough people with the right strings. My father had only attended once in his life and my step mother made it impossible for him to return. Now I stood amongst the elite, casting a shadow on both of them.
I'm the crowd I saw an all too familiar face. Nadia. Her fruitless and shameless attempts to seduce the security detail not unnoticed.
"Addie!" She screamed at me, her eyes furious and frightful, like some wild beast. She rushed past a guard and almost made it to me but Vincent was faster.
He grabbed her wrist and threw her down in such a quick motion I hadn't noticed the sickening snap of her arm until her shrill scream echoed in the chaos. She grabbed her arm, screaming and flailing like an injured child. The security guards were stunned, everyone was stunned. I knew he'd get backlash for this but he didn't seem to care as he looked down at her coldly.
"Approach my wife again and I'll do much worse. Understood?" His voice was cold and for the first time since meeting him I felt truly terrified.
I knew he was capable of violence but he'd hardly ever displayed it. I was stunned in place. He reached a hand out to me, his eyes still dark with anger for Nadia. Veronica was also stunned and narrowed her eyes at him.
"Vincent...you can't just..." She was cut off as his glare landed on her. She became silent and looked away, not wanting to irritate him further.
I took his hand reluctantly. His touch was still warm and full of his love for me but the darkness in his eyes made it hard to breath. Luckily his eyes softened as we walked away from the scene, leaving Nadia to the paramedics and stunned onlookers.
