Kelly
She knew she was flying the a*sshole, Mr Lombardi Junior today. Her heart fluttered in trepidation. What if she got into an altercation? Their last meeting wasn't very promising and she had accepted this job even after refusing it to him.
She smiled to show that she was calling a truce, hoping that he wouldn’t say anything in front of the supermodel hanging onto his arm. Rich people and their ultra rich girlfriends!
The woman looked like she had walked right from Cosmopolitan cover, with perfect curves in the right places, an enviable pout that was impeccably painted with red lipstick, flawless makeup and immaculate nails.
Her golden gown flowed around her long legs that looked like they reached up to her ears. She walked confidently on her six inch pencil heels, clinging to his arm. Like liquid silk, her blonde tresses fell in waves over her shoulders, almost reaching to her plunging neckline.
Kelly felt like a country girl in front of the woman, but she wasn’t intimidated. She was who she was and she was here for her job. She loved her suit and her messy hair. Her face had no make up. It would only get cakey and smudgy with the sweat as she had to wear the helmet for extended hours.
Her only go to skincare was sunscreen for protection, and she had applied a lip balm to protect her pink lips.
When the girl opened her mouth Kelly knew her interests and IQ instantly, but again who was she to find fault in someone else? If a dynamic and attractive guy like Mr Lombardi wanted a brainless trophy on his arm, who was she to judge?
It did not matter that the guy was one of the Forbes listed thirty under thirties. He looked like a model himself with his hair tied back in a man bun, his sexy stubble trimmed to perfection and the glimpse of his tattoo over his open collar. The classic black suit with black tie and black brogues against the lightest grey formal shirt was killing it.
He walked in confident strides with the model on one hand and the other hand hidden in the pocket of his pants. The two looked like a power couple from the centre pages of a magazine.
She sighed internally, wondering if she would ever see that tattoo which teases her from his collar, every time she sees him.
She mentally shook her head. F*ck! Why am I even checking the tattoo out?
Her boss was sexy as hell and arrogant as a devil. She knew she would never get along with a guy like that. Only looks meant nothing. That did not mean that she wasn’t attracted to him.
Any woman, even if she was dead, resting in a coffin, would wake up if he stood in front of her.
She was professional, and this was work. She did not want to give him a reason to complain, especially as he had a frown on his face since he had spotted her next to the A- star. Bill had enjoyed the flight with her and Lombardi Junior's sister, Gabrielle, had also been a fun passenger.
So when she saw that his lady friend lose patience with her safety talk, she swiftly climbed into the cockpit and started the engine. There was no point in annoying the billionaires. They clearly had enough experience of travelling in choppers.
She still had a racing heart, which had nothing to do with her flying skills and everything to do with the masculine presence of her boss in the chopper. She convinced herself that her body’s reaction was because of the stress of her first flight with him.
Throughout the ten minutes of the flight, she could feel the chemistry of the two people sitting behind her. She did not turn towards them. She did not really like the woman at first sight, so it was better to steer clear of her two passengers.
They reached the Romano towers where Kelly dropped them and asked when she was expected back. She was scheduled to wait at Southampton heliport.
The two lovebirds left, leaving Kelly peacefully alone in her mean machine. She hovered, turned and was off towards the heliport. The best thing she liked about her job was the exhilaration she felt every single time she flew the machine.
It was as if she was transported back in time and was a young, carefree girl again who believed that the world was a beautiful place for little girls. After her first boyfriend in the flying school and then working at NYPD and of course, Alex, she now knew better.
She was following Alex’s daughter’s investigations, using her own contacts, but the cops hadn’t found out anything yet. The sixteen year old, had met someone on an online dating platform. The entire ID was fake and the IP address was wrong too.
These new age dating practices had put young girls so much at risk!
She taxied into the Southampton heliport, found her spot and killed the engine. She had to wait until Mr Lombardi Jr called. Miss Janice had mentioned that the meeting could last for an hour or an hour and a half.
As far as she understood, if the activities between Mr Lombardi and his lady companion were to be considered, the meeting might even extend by a few hours. Unless Lombardi is real quick in bed.
She giggled. Somehow, she couldn’t picture Lombardi as someone who would be hasty. He looked like he enjoyed a slow hunt, capturing and relishing his prey. The thoughts sent a rush of heat to her groin, and she clucked her tongue. She had to do something about her libido. It was going out of control.!
Would be better to concentrate on what she was going to do in this sweltering heat of the suit, waiting for her boss. So she decided to grab a coffee in the lounge and see if she could find someone she knew. Sometimes these lounges would have her classmates who worked for different aviation companies.
While waiting for her coffee, she called David. The guy had been ghosting her since he came to know of her relationship with Alex. She had a suspicion that Alex might be the reason behind it.
He did not attend her phone call, so she left a voice message asking him to call her as soon as possible. She deliberately let it sound urgent, to ensure that he called her. Her coffee was ready. The lounge was almost empty, so she sipped the brew and enjoyed that peaceful time.
A few minutes later, David called, which was great. As she was chatting with David, she saw a call from Miss Janice in waiting. She attended it as Janice was calling to remind her to get to the Romano towers on time. Mr Lombardi would need her soon.
She was surprised at the prompt timing. She disconnected the call with David, promising him she would call soon and sprint towards the chopper. Within minutes, she was back at the towers and sure enough, Leonardo stood there waiting for her.
She hovered at the helipad. Mr Lombardi swiftly got in and she was up in the air again.
Usually, she wasn’t the one to engage in a small chat with her passengers. Two days back, Gabrielle Lombardi was her passenger, and the girl was full of life. She couldn’t stop chatting! In fact, they had hit it off as friends and Gabrielle had insisted that Kelly call her Gabby.
Today Kelly couldn’t stop herself and before she knew it, she blurted. “That was quick! I thought you would need at least half a day.”
The line was silent. Sh*t, sh*t, sh*t! Me and my dumbass mouth. This way I won’t keep this job for even a month! She mentally kicked herself.
After what appeared to be hours, his gruff voice filled her ears. “Why so?”
Now, what was she supposed to say? She tried looking for politically correct sentences. She couldn’t remain mum like this. He had asked a question, and she needed to answer it.
“Because you had company?” It sounded more like a question. How pathetic. How did it matter to her he had company?
God! This conversation is going downhill pretty soon.
“Who?” This time he sounded confused. “Kim?” He chuckled. “She is Kim Romano. She needed a lift to reach her dad and used Lombardi Inc.’s chopper to get there on time.” He did not talk again, and Kelly exhaled.
Maybe he wasn't annoyed. Maybe they were just friends.
Hah! Just friends, my ass! The Kim girl totally adores him! Can't he see? So they weren’t a couple? Pretty hard to believe. Again, rich people and their weird relations or more like men and their idiosyncrasies. Kim's thoughts continued on the matter.
Soon they were back at West 30th Street Heliport. She parked the chopper, killed the engine and remarked. “There! We cheated death one more time!” She announced in good humour.
Sh*t! Again the smart ass mouth! Why can't I control?
“Thank you! And I thought you'd take me down with you.” Mr Lombardi replied.
Stunned, she thought about what he had just said. Was it an innocent jibe or an innuendo?
Just before turning in the headsets, he said. “That you Kelly. That was a good flight and I don't have time for bimbos.”
Before she could register what he had just said, he had gotten off the chopper and left.
She could only stare at his well- contoured, retreating back with mouth agape.
Did he just flirt with her?
