I spent the one hour break, eating, watching, and listening to the other servant course students and some other civil course sutdents. As I said before, I need to know my future master's (which I don't even know who) character and personality. And to know them in the most legal way possible that I could of; is listening to the others talk.
I already memorized the order by which the children of the king were born, their age, gender and current place. The only issues are their personalities, preferences, looks, and how they view the people around them. I most likely have to change my actions whenever I'm around them, so I need those informatons real bad!
Knock! Knock!
Thinking those. I knocked on the dark-oak wooden door infront of me. It's been an hour already and I gained nothing from listening to the other student's words. It looks like their lips are sealed, well I'd be worried if they aren't.
Knock! Knock!
I knocked once again. There seems to be no one around.
'It looks like Mr. Frill haven't yet returned'
With that thought, I decided to stand beside the door and wait for his arrival. Thankfully I don't have to wait long as I saw Mr. Frill walking towards here.
'It looks like he hasn't noticed me yet'
There was someone walking a couple of steps behind him, a woman dressed in maid clothing, they seemed to be talking about something.
A few moments later, Mr. Frill and the woman noticed me standing besides the door and it seems he said something to her.
I fixed my posture and uniform and greeted them with a slight gesture. Mr. Frill nod his head and the woman-c*m-maid pinched the hem of her clothes and curtsied.
"Let's talk inside"
With Mr. Frill's words, I followed behind the two as we enter his office. Mr. Frill told us to take our seats, and we did, the woman sat on the long sofa and I sat on a couch beside the sofa. Mr. Frill sat across the woman.
"First of all, I'd like to thank you once again Ms. Dawn for accepting my invitation"
"I should be the one thanking you, Headmaster, for fulfilling my selfish request. I would be retiring soon, and I want for someone competent to replace my seat"
"I have done my best looking for that very someone but wasn't able to find them, but thankfully Count Vinceral recommended a competent one, we would observed that person's actions and if he doesn't fit, we'll find another. We can't let the seat of the Ms. Dawn to be left empty"
"I'm thankful Headmaster. Is the young man here the one you talk about?"
'Listening to your talk, it seems that I really am that person'
Thinking those. I stood up, put my hand on my chest, the other behind my back
and bowed as I introduced myself in the most gentlemanly tone I could do.
"This humble servant is named Kaiser. It's a pleasure meeting you madame"
"Oh- My name is Dawn Velan, current maid of one of His Majesty's scion, Second Princess Eleonora Shuvan Ascorte Memphis. It's a pleasure meeting you, Mr. Kaiser"
Though she was surprised at first, Ms. Dawn stood up from her seat, and pinched the hem of her clothes then bowed slightly.
...By how their talk earlier goes, does it mean that I'm assigned as the Second Princess' butler? Isn't that bad for an unknown man to be around a lady of marriageable age?
Should I ask? I'm a little curious here, because according to what I read in the history and policies of the Kingdom Memphis. A female member of the Nobility specially the Royalty are not allowed to hire male servants, this rule became much effective if she is of a marriageable age.
Knights are asigned to them to protect them, but they aren't allowed to accompany them everywhere they go. That changes if it's a servant, such as maids specifically personal maids, they are required to follow their Young Ladies around, wherever they go.
"...May I ask something?" I said.
Curiosity kills the cat, but I don't think my question is inappropriate enough to be sent to the gallows or something. Hell, I'm even confident it's a very important question.
Hearing my words, Mr. Frill looked towards Ms. Dawn, I did the same as I waited for her reply. Fortunately, she nod her head.
"You may"
"...My apologies if my words may seem to question your words madame. But, isn't it bad for a male servant to serve the Second Princess?"
With my words, Mr. Frill and Ms. Dawn, looked at each other. Seriousness appeared on their person.
"...I think you have the right to know the answer to that"
Mr. Frill said then looked at Ms. Dawn. Ms dawn nod her head in return.
"The princess was exempted from the policy by the King himself. The reason I'm looking for someone to replace my seat; besides the fact that I'm worried about the princess, His Majesty ordered me to as well. His Majesty said that I should look for a male servant to serve the princess. I have asked the same question, and His Majesty said that his reason is that he's greatly worried about her"
...Aren't his words kinda contradictory? If he was worried about her, why assign a male servant of unknown origin to her? Why does it have to be a male servant? Wouldn't that only make her more prone to dangers? She may be attending the Magic Academy, but if a stronger opponent disguised themselves as a butler to infiltrate the palace, she would be in great danger. So why?
"Honestly, I don't really want for My Lady to be around any ordinary man as she's of a marriageable age, I don't know what I'd do if something happened to her"
Ms. Dawn said as she looked at me, from head to toe. She seems to be scrutinizing wether to follow the King's order or reject it.
Honestly, I don't want to do this job. I want to travel the world and see what it got for me. But if I'm to think of the reason I was transported here, I can't just ignore this place. That damn Regarde might be watching my everymove and unlike the other Gods who does not have any abilities to interfere in the mortal realm, he might have ways, he knows my name even if I'm from another world. Reil didn't know my name so something must've prevented her from knowing, even if the other people called me by my name here, she didn't speak about my name before but only refer to me as 'Lost one', she even threatened me for my name.
'Welp. Can't do sh*t but do this job, this is the easiest way to infiltrate the palace'
"...But, you seem to be decent"
Ms. Dawn said after analyzing me.
"I'm glad. He's Count Vinceral's recommendation so I don't know what I'd say to him if he does not fit"
"The Count will understand it. He knows what's best for the Royal Family that's why he won't send someone worthless"
"Ms. Dawn's words is harsh, but I do agree that the Count won't just give recommendations out of nowhere"
"Anyways, it would be time for the afternoon lessons. I thank you for your time Ms. Dawn. Mr. Kaiser, I'll be seeing you in class"
Mr. Frill said and stood up from his seat. Ms. Dawn and I stood up as well.
"Could you reserve another candidate in case that Mr. Kaiser failed in gaining My Lady's favor? It's not like I don't like Mr. Kaiser, but My Lady is... how do I say it, cold-hearted? She does not trust others besides me and a few of my colleagues. It's better if another maid replaced me if Mr. Kaiser failed"
"I already have a few maid candidates, I'll introduce them when the time comes"
"Thank You. Well then, We'll be leaving now"
"I'll accompany you out of the Academy"
With that, we left the civil academy. My first job according to Ms. Dawn is to introduce myself to the princess.
"I'd like to see how you perform, but sadly, I can't let you serve her yet. introduce yourself first, the better the first impression is, the better you could gain My Lady's favor"
No matter how much I think about it, a normal introduction would not give me anything but flat-out rejection. Would a knight in shining armor type of introduction work? But I don't think there are people who would mess with a member of the royalty unless they are terrorist or just plain idiots. Plus, she can use magic so she can protect herself from harm. She may even be stronger than I am.
'I think. It's better not to show myself for now'
With that thought in mind. I opened my mouth.
"Madame" I called.
"Ms. Dawn is fine, we would be working together even if it's only temporary"
"Then, Ms dawn"
"Hmm?"
"I think I'll be observing for now. It's not good to suddenly show up and introduce myself as her new servant"
"...Why? Are you not confident in gaining My Lady's trust?"
"I am, if she's just an ordinary princess that is. But based on what you've said earlier, if the princess' attitude is as you've said, then I'll just be rejected before I could even open my mouth"
"You immediately understood what would be the outcome huh? As expected of Count Vinceral, he choose amazing people. But even so, you need to introduce yourself somehow. She would kick you out if she find you disrespectful and annoying"
"That's why I'm going to be observing for now"
"As I said, If you just follow behind me and she finds you annoying and disrespectful because you didn't introduce yourself, she'll kick you out immediately and you have no way of coming back"
'Who said I'm showing myself?'
I thought. But I won't say it. I need to act as the expressionless, yet level-headed butler than can do almost everything!
"Are you listening?"
"Yes, but I won't change my mind"
"Haaa... Don't bame me if you got kick out alright?"
"Ah- please remember that I'll be behind you"
"What are you talking about?"
"Please remember it"
"...Alright. We will wait for the princess inside the parlour, we'll prepare her meal and drink, we have a few more hours before the mid-afternoon break, so help in the preparation as well"
I nod my head. I'll be seeing new types of cuisine! Well, a one person meal would not be that extravagant even if she's a princess. There's also a limit to how much one can eat. So I might not see any.
I also have my way to not be seen if the princess arrive. The only problem is if I can be detected by magic or I'll be prevented from using them inside the parlour. I don't know much about magic, but I guess I could learn a few if I look at the books in the library...
"Are servants allowed in the library?"
I asked Ms. Dawn. She seems surprised at first but soon calmed herself.
"I didn't expect you to like books. I thought you like the sword more"
"I'm not fit for the sword"
"Oh my? Are you aiming to be a scholar?"
Even if I have the brain to be one (which I obviously doesn't have), I don't want to be a scholar. I want to be an adventurer!
"No. I'm of a common background, so I want learn things, that other common people have no access to"
"...Are you thinking of sharing it to others as well?"
I shook my head.
"I won't. Great work reaps great reward. So I don't plan on sharing what I have to those who does not do anything. They have to earn the knowledge themselves"
In addition. I don't even know other common people besides the girl and a few soldiers from Minister Harold's 5th Legion and Count Vincerals troops.
"...It's allowed"
"hmm?"
"The answer to your question earlier. We are allowed to enter, though we are restricted from the 2nd floor and above"
Ms. Dawn said. I look towards her direction and saw a complicated expression on her face.
"Is something bothering you, Ms. Dawn?"
"No, nothing's bothering me"
"...If you say so"
Something must've irked her.
"We're near the academy. My Lady is already inside, so we should prepare in the parlour for her return"
After saying this, we went to a different path, it's a path for servants directed towards the parlours and other resting area for the young nobilities and royalties. As we traverse the path, I could see other servants going in and out of the buildng through the open hall, there are no doors, but there are knights stationed from here and there. And as we enter the academy through this path, I could see more of them inside. I could also see a few young master and young ladies walking with their servants.
And as we went deeper, a door with an engraving of an eagle with its wings spread wide and has a sword attached to its beak - the symbol of the Memphis Royal Family, greetes us.
It's the beginning of my work as a servant in another world.
