Chapter 3: Second Mate? PT 1

1072 Words
Alexis’s POV:     Dinner was strange tonight. It seemed like everyone was on edge because Connor was super antsy. I asked him if he was okay before heading to our bedroom, and he replied with a nod before ducking into his office. I am trying not to focus on it because I know he gets like this sometimes and probably has pack duties he needs to tend to. However, it has me just as anxious.     Connor is the Alpha, and I am the Luna of our pack, Crimson Forest. Our pack is the most ruthless as well as the most powerful and most extensive in the united states. We don’t take s**t from anyone, and most packs don’t want to mess with us. A few packs have grown some balls over the years and try to start pack war, but we take them out quickly and efficiently.     Our pack has grown steadily over the years. Wolves left behind from fallen packs are given two choices. You can join our pack peacefully, or you become a rogue. A rogue is a wolf that has no family. They tend to smell like mangey mutts, look diseased, and answer to only themselves. They usually don’t run in packs, but sometimes they can function in a group of three or four.     Since our pack is so large, our territory is like a vast compound. It is large enough for families to live outside of our pack house. The pack house is strictly for the higher-ranking families. The first floor is designated to the kitchen, pantry, living room, dining hall, theatre room, and offices. The second floor is for the Elders and the Head Warriors, the fourth floor is for the Gammas and the Betas, and the fifth floor is for the Alpha and Luna’s floor. Most of our families live on the same floor as us. Some choose to live inside the compound instead of with us in the pack house.     Wolves are very s****l creatures, and we tend to be loud, so all the bedrooms and offices are completely soundproof. Believe me; it is nice not to worry about how loud you are, especially if you have a third or fourth in your bed. Connor and I are incredibly open with our relationship, as well as our s*x life.     We are both bisexual. While Connor is my soul mate, in the bedroom is the only time he lets go of his possessiveness over me. Wolves are highly possessive over their mates. Typically, if a wolf, mated or not, shows attention to their mate, it can send them into a jealous fit. Connor and I are unusually s****l for wolves. We have come up with ways to bring other wolves into our bedroom to fulfill our needs. It doesn’t often happen because you have to find the right wolf, but it can go on all night when it does it.     We have an elevator that I could take to our floor, but I felt like taking the stairs. I am on the fourth floor when I hear my best friend and female beta, Mallory.     “What is going on with Conner?”     I stop on the stairs so that I can hear who she is talking to.     “I don’t know, babe, but he is very fidgety, at least more than normal. Have you talked to Lex?” asks Derik?     “No, I didn’t want to stress her out. She already has enough on her plate,” says Mallory.     “You should talk to her. She is probably just as worried,” responded Derik.     That is my cue to get my ass upstairs without them hearing me quickly. With our enhanced hearing, that might prove to be more difficult. Being as quiet as I can be, I race up the stairs to my room. A couple of minutes later, there is a knock at the door. I know who it is, and I hope she didn’t notice that I heard them. They have the right to talk about their concerns with each other. I just happen to overhear it.     Opening the door, I sigh. “Yes”     It is exactly who I expected it to be. “Hey Lex, do you have a minute?” asks Mallory.     “Sure, come on in.” Mallory steps into the room, and I shut the door behind her. As we move to the little sitting area in Connor and I’s room, I decide to tell her that I overheard them. “Hey, I overheard Derik and you talking earlier. I didn’t want you to be upset with me at the moment. I wasn’t spying on you. I just happened to come up the stairs at that moment. I am sorry.”     “We realized as you went up the stairs that you had heard us, and we should have had the conversation in our room. You shouldn’t be apologizing for walking in your own house. We should be for talking about the Alpha behind his back,” replies Mallory hurriedly.     I hold my hand up, telling her to stop. She bows her head, which is a sign of respect. I lift her chin with my finger and shake my head. “You do not need to submit right now. I am not upset. If you have a concern, I understand why you would be talking to one another. I am not sure what is going on with Connor, but he is super antsy. It has my anxiety skyrocketing, and I can tell the pack is on edge.”     “I know, but we should have talked privately. I appreciate your understanding, and if you are not sure, then maybe we should do something to take our minds off things. Derik said they had some pack duties to finish before he would be coming to bed anyway,” states Mallory.     “Sounds good. Boardgame or movie?” I ask.      Mallory shifts slightly, and you can tell she is pondering her choices. We love board games, but sometimes it is nice just to relax and not put thought into what you are doing. “I would love to play a board game, but I would rather just chill tonight if you are cool with that.”
