Chapter 1: Blood and Pain PT 2

1198 Words
Sasha's POV:      As I move to the front, I tell LeAnn to look in the adult-youth section because sometimes they are placed in the wrong place. I review the computer to see who checked them out, and coincidentally enough, they are signed out by the same person. Alexis King has them, and they are only a couple of days late. I will wait a couple of days to see if she brings them in before reaching out.      My watch starts vibrating, warning me we have 15 minutes before the library closes. I walk around notifying the patrons in the building we will be closing soon, and they need to make their selections quickly. At five, LeAnn and I are both walking out of the building.      “Have a good night, LeAnn,” I call to her as I slide into my car. I barely hear her reply, “You too,” as I shut my door. Before I back up, I give her a little wave and head to the conservation center for my evening jog. I pull into the parking lot and strip my sweater off. I always wear a sports bra because it makes it easier to jog. Plus, they are ten times more comfortable than a regular bra.      I grab my water bottle I filled up this morning before leaving for work. I jog the same path every day so that I can get in my 3 miles. It takes me about 30 minutes to run my usual route. I put on my 90’s Alternative Rock playlist on my Spotify account while putting in my beats running headphones, and I take off.      Halfway through my run, I get a prickling sensation on the back of my neck. I always get it when someone is staring at me, so I feel like I am being watched. I keep running, but I take out one of my earbuds so that I can hear all my surroundings. About five minutes later, I hear this ear-splitting growl off to my left.      Without skipping a beat, I tear off, running down the path faster than I have ever run in my entire life. Yanking the other earbud out of my ear, I accidentally drop them, but I do not stop. My heart is beating out of my chest, and I am developing a stitch in my side. I raise my arms to try to ease the pain. However, I do not see the tree root sticking out of the ground.      I fall to my face and hit my head on a rock. I wake up to red eyes staring at me from the tree line. I think I was only out for a few minutes; however, the pain in my head has me distracted. Feeling the warm liquid running down into my peripheral vision, I realize that I am bleeding. Damn, I hope I do not have a concussion.      I feel my watch start to vibrate repeatedly. It has to be Aiden calling. I must have been out longer than I thought. He only starts to pester if I haven’t made it home, and don't let him know. s**t, it is six in the evening, and I should definitely already be home. I know he will keep calling, and I cannot answer the phone since I dropped my headphones. I start to stand to get my phone out of my pants when I hear the growl again.      How could I have forgotten about the red eyes? I snap my head to the sound and see a wolf. This is no ordinary wolf. This wolf has to be two, maybe three times the size of a regular wolf. It starts to advance on me, and I turn to run the other way. As I do, another wolf pounces in front of me to block my path.      I have no way to escape and most likely dead, but I am not a quitter. My only escape is to run through the undisturbed forest bed. I take a deep breath and dart to my right, running and jumping over fallen logs. I know if I look behind me, I could trip.      Knowing this decision is foolish, I turn and look behind me. The wolves have disappeared and are no longer following me. I stop, slightly confused about where they have gone. As I turn back around to continue going in the direction I was running, I walk straight into an even bigger wolf. How the hell is this possible? It is taller than me, and it has drool dripping off its menacing muzzle.      I turn to run back the way I came. This wolf was closer, and it clamps down on my calf. I fall to the ground as I let the loudest pitch scream loose. My leg is burning, and I am not really sure why. It isn’t a normal pain… it is like my leg is on fire. I turn around to do everything I can to fight this wolf off when I see a wolf out of the corner of my eye. It barrels into the wolf that bit me.      The new wolf attacks the other one, and I take that as my cue to take off. I set off running towards the path that I was once on, but my leg is getting worse, and I am terrified. My worry now is that I am going to bleed out. I stop, wishing that I had my baggy sweater because I could have tied it around my leg to help stop the bleeding.      I lean against a tall tree to my right, hoping that I stop bleeding soon. However, the blood is pooling around me and is unlike anything I have ever felt before. It isn’t warm like earlier; it feels cold against my skin. If I remember correctly, my blood should be warm, not f*****g cold. I hear a twig snap, and my heart skips a beat. I know that it's one of the wolves coming back to finish me off.      I look to my right, and to my amazement, this wolf is even larger than the other wolves. The wolf is jet black, and you can tell that it has blood matted to its fur. It kneels, kind of like it is bowing to me, but our eyes are at the same level.      The wolf has golden amber eyes, and there are so many doubts buzzing around in those questioning eyes. I mean, if a wolf could be asking things, this is what I would assume it would look like. To be honest, I have just as many questions, but I feel safe. I know that doesn’t sound sane, but I feel like this wolf would annihilate anything that would try to bring me harm.      My eyes start to flutter, and the wolf lifts his head to let loose the most beautiful howl I have ever heard in my entire life. As my eyes close, I swear I saw the wolf turn into a wolf-like creature that had similar features to a wolf. How can that be?
