Unknown's POV:
As we get closer, I notice more blood puddles, and her scent grows more potent, as does the irony, copper smell of her blood. Mav is so tense; he is struggling to stay calm. I notice she is only wearing leggings and a sports bra, which makes me uncomfortable. He accidentally steps on a twig, which breaks the deafening silence, and her head snaps towards us. This is the first time I have seen her, and to say she is gorgeous is utterly an understatement.
The most prominent feature is her luscious lips. I think about what it would be like to kiss them, which makes me question everything at that moment. Who is this girl? Where did she come from? She appears to be human. How did she get here? Why did the rogues attack her? She notices my questions, and it seems she has her own. She doesn’t seem scared, so that is probably the most obvious one.
Her magnificent green eyes start to flutter, and Mav is panicked. He lifts his snout and lets loose the most heart-wrenching howl. We have to get her to the pack doctor. She isn’t going to make it if we don’t do something soon. She is going to notice her blood feels like ice. Maybe they can stop the change, but we are probably too late with how much blood she has lost.
C: Derik, Andrew.
D: Yes, Alpha.
C: Derik, wake the pack doctor and have them prepared to try to stop a change. Andrew, wake my father and the other Elders. She is my mate, and we have to figure out what is going on. I don’t want to break Lexi’s heart. If she asks what is going on, please tell her that we have an injured human coming to the pack house. Ask her to have the cooks make some food for us as well as our guests. There will be no time for rest.
D: Yes, Alpha!
We need to stop our change halfway so I can carry her back to the pack house. I hate doing this, but I agree. It is the only way we will get there quick enough. Mav backs up, allowing more room for our transformation. It is more painful for us to stop our transition midway through; however, it gives us the ability to be more human. We are faster and stronger than we are in our human form. Our senses are even sharper, but it doesn’t compare to when we are in our wolf form.
We lean back on our hind haunches. Our legs extend, as well as our abdomen allowing us to stand up straighter like a human. Our snout recedes slightly, and our ears transform into points, slightly resembling elf ears. Our front paws transform into human hands with elongated fingers and sharp claws. At the same time, our hind paws change into human feet with smaller claws than our fingers. My eyes are still a golden amber. I notice her eyes shut, and her head slumps forward right after we finish our transformation.
I grab the belt I had, securing my clothes to my hind leg and tourniquet right above her calf where that mangey mutt bit her. I cannot get dressed because we are slightly larger, even between our human and wolf forms. I start running, forgetting the clothes. We are about 5 miles from the pack house. It will take me about 20 minutes to get there. I just hope it is enough.
She smells like Lexi but sweeter. I am so confused, Mav. What does this mean? I don’t want Lexi to be heartbroken. The Moon Goddess apparently has given us two mates. I don’t know for what purpose, but this explains why you were so anxious. Subconsciously you had to have known what was going to happen. I have been on edge, but not like you.
I am about halfway to the pack house when Lexi mind links me.
L: Hey, babe. I woke up to you howling, but Derik and Andrew said that you were okay. I did everything you asked me to take care of, but I am still confused about why you were out or what is going on. What’s going on?
C: Derik, Andrew, and I were patrolling the borders. I was still feeling anxious after you fell asleep and had to go for a run. We heard a scream and found a rogue attacking a human. She has been bit, and I am bringing her to the pack doctor to see if they can stop the change.
L: Who is she, why was she so close to our borders, and why did the rogue attack her? Derik and Andrew said there were three rogues. Did you kill them all?
C: Yes, they managed to capture one of them, and I will find out more when we can interrogate him. I have no idea who she is or why she was attacked. My goal is to get her to the doctor, and hopefully, I am not too late. She has lost a lot of blood.
L: You sound different. Is everything okay?
C: I don’t want to talk about it right now, but no, it isn’t okay. I love you, and we will figure everything out in time, but I don’t know what is going on right now.
L: Okay, babe. We can make it through anything. We are stronger than whatever storm is coming. I love you.
With that, Lexi broke the mind link. I hope she is right. I agree with her. Lexi and Alice are very intellectual, and they understand the Moon Goddess has plans for us that even we don’t understand. You are right. Of course, I am. Shut it, asshole.
We finally break through the edge of the trees, slowing slightly because I don’t want to alarm the families that live on the edge of our compound. There are a few men outside getting ready for their morning duties. If I had to guess, it is about five in the morning, and the sun will be rising in roughly an hour. As we pass, I see a few alarmed faces, but everyone still bows their respect.
I am sure the news of their Alpha entering the compound from the southeast forests, bloodied, carrying a limp human woman covered in blood, will spread through the pack like wildfire. I will have to make an announcement as soon as I can, so gossip doesn’t spread too rapidly. Luckily, I can call a pack meeting as soon as a reasonable hour comes around.
Striding towards the pack hospital, I see Lexi exit the doors, and I am immediately filled with dread. I had hoped she would wait at the pack house. I should have known being the Luna, her empathic self would take over, and she would be here. I notice her body stiffen as she raises her face slightly, her shoulders lift as she takes a giant sniff through her nostrils.
She looks at me, and her eyes glow the same golden amber color mine are, as she says, “MATE.” What the hell is going on? How can this be?
