Unknown’s POV:
As I look up, I notice the moon is exceptionally high in the sky and is so full, and it is illuminating the night beautifully. I am patrolling our borders with my beta and gamma. I usually leave patrol duty up to the pack warriors. However, I was feeling extremely antsy. I had to get out of the pack house and let my wolf run. For some reason, I feel like there is about to be a significant power shift.
We are at the south border heading east. My wolf needed a drink, so we have stopped at the spring-fed pond taking a short break. My anxiety eases with every step we take, and I hope it disappears entirely soon. We take off running, outrunning the other two with ease. Being the Alpha of my pack, my wolf is the largest, strongest, and fastest.
Maverick is jet black and is about four times larger than an ordinary wolf. He has golden amber eyes, and his fur is shaggy. As for werewolves, we share the same body with our counterparts and can communicate with each other. Most of the time, having someone to discuss things with constantly is nice. However, the banter can be slightly annoying. Like with our wolves, we can also mind link anyone in our pack if they are conscious and not in a lot of pain. Communication at far distances can be more difficult. Still, it is nice to be able to warn someone of incoming threats.
My beta, Derik, is the second-largest wolf in my pack and my gamma, Andrew, is the third. We all come from long lines of Alphas, Betas, and Gammas. We grew up together in the pack house and see each other as brothers. Our parents are the same way since they also grew up together. Derik’s wolf is a dark brown with a light brown patch on his chest, while Andrew’s wolf was light brown with no other coloring or markings. They have dark green eyes.
The antsy feeling is still there, and I decide to give complete control over to Mav. Even though we share the same body, we respect each other’s boundaries. I mind link the guys, letting them know I am not going to be in control. They let their wolves take over as well, so they have a better chance of keeping up. Our wolves are faster and stronger when they are in charge.
We pass some rabbits, and I know Mav is going to turn around for a late-night snack. He stops on his heels turning around in a split-second. Lifting his snout into the air, he sniffs and instantly picks up their trail. We find them quickly since the moon is so luminous tonight. The other two catch their own, and we let our wolves get their fill.
The silence is suddenly broken by a piercing scream snapping me forward in our mind. Then the smell hits me like a ton of bricks. It is blood, and it smells like Alexis, but something is wrong. I don’t even have time to process everything completely before Mav is taking off like a bullet. We come into a clearing, and there is a rouge standing over a girl. She appears to have the same build as Alexis, but her hair is auburn.
As we get closer, her scent grows more robust, and Mav yells MATE MATE MATE! Mav, what the f**k are you talking about? We have a mate, and she isn’t her. I know, but she is our mate, and we have to help her. I agree with saving her, but I do not understand how she can be our mate. Lexi is our mate. I don’t know either, but I know for sure that she is as well.
As we get closer, I can tell that the filthy rouge has bitten her calf, and we are instantly blinded by anger. I do not know what is happening, but I realize we have to protect her at all costs. I will kill this disgusting mutt. How dare he touch what is mine? Woah, what is mine? I don’t even know this girl. We barrel into the rouge just as I see his muscles coil, preparing for his pounce.
We catch him off guard, and it takes him a moment to get his barring before he squares off. He will fight, but he will die. He injured someone obviously important to me, and he will not get away with it. Mav growls at him, letting him know that he is f****d, and he has no chance against us. His hackles raise as he returns the growl.
He charges at us as we jump out of the way with ease. I notice he is favoring his right side. He is favoring his right side. I know I am going to make him suffer before I snap that neck of his. He bit her, and he is going to die. Agreed.
The rogue takes advantage of our internal dialogue and makes use of his opportunity to attack us. His claws dig into my haunches, and I know the wound is deep. The rouge coughs as if he is laughing, which pisses Mav off even more. If he keeps it up, Mav won’t be able to kill him slowly, like we intend to. The hell I won’t. He will pay. Okay, dude, I just haven’t seen you this pissed in a while. Focus.
Mav lunges at the rouge scratching his left eye. The wound makes it hard for the rouge to see, and to compensate for the new injury, he must focus on using his already wounded side. Nice. Mav doesn’t respond but goes after him again, biting his hind leg, causing him to limp more severely. He will not get away with this.
Mav faces him one last time, pretending to favor the wound on our left side. Luckily, this lines us up on his right side, the one he is actually favoring. He tries to tackle our front leg, but Mav is quicker, biting his front leg in two. The rogue falls to the ground, rolling head over tail until he collapses. Most wolves cannot handle an injury as severe. However, this fucker starts to stir.
How is he still going? I don’t know, but this ends now. I’m done playing. Mav walks over to the rouge, bending down, and simply snaps his neck. Hearing movement behind us, Mav pivots quickly, growling fiercely and raising his hackles to know that he means business.
D: Woah, Connor, it's Derik and Andrew. Chill out, dude.
C: Where were you guys? I am not that fast.
A: We saw you plow into the bigger rogue behind you, but before we could get close enough to help, two smaller rogues jumped us. One of them is dead, and the other one is passed out closer to the conservation center.
C: Did you see where the girl went?
D: She is leaned up against a tree to your left. Who is she?
As I am getting ready to respond, Mav takes off in the direction Derik said she was. I link the guys so they don’t think we are ignoring them.
C: I don’t know who she is, but Mav says she is our mate, which I do not understand. Do not say anything to anyone. Head back to the pack house in case she needs the pack doctor. Please have the warriors pick up the injured rogue. Throw it in the dungeons so that I can interrogate him later. I must know why they were on our land.
A: Yes, Alpha.
