Connor’s POV:
The pack disperses from the clearing as Derik, Andrew, and their spouses come over. I have to interrogate the rogue. I must find out why they were on our land and why they attacked our mate. Most of the time we aren’t able to get the information we need from them resulting in torturing them. We normally don’t let the girls into the dungeons during this.
However, Lexi looks determined to go with us this time and Brittany just looks nauseous. She never has gotten used to the thought of our interrogations. She saw Andrew once after one and has never spoken about it since. “Babe, you don’t look so good. Why don’t you go up to our room and take a nap?” Andrew suggests.
She gives him a quick hug and kiss, quickly turning on her heels, and heads to the packhouse. “She cannot handle the thought of me hurting anyone. She understands the rogue is a bad seed, but her empathetic heart just cannot handle it,” Andrew explains while kicking dirt up and scratching the back of his neck.
“Dude, we get it. You don’t have to explain her actions. She wasn’t born into our world and this is all new for her. I hate to say this, but to be honest, I am surprised she agreed to transition,” I tell him as we start to head to the dungeons. “She is a viable member in our pack, and I think once your pup gets here, her demeanor will change.”
He pauses for a moment and looks at us all. “I haven’t told you guys this because I wasn’t sure, but I think she is struggling with the pregnancy and thought of becoming a mother to a pup so soon. We didn’t mean to get pregnant. She missed a dose of her birth control and the next month she was pregnant. I know she loves me, but I fear it is because of the mate bond. I want her to be happy and I think she regrets her choice to transition.”
His confession makes me regret my words instantly. However, Lexi walks over to him and gives him a hug. Finding the right thing to say first, “Andrew, we all love you like a brother. If you need extra support, then let us know. Have you brought up your concerns with her?” She asks as she steps away.
“I have asked her if she is doing okay. I make sure she is comfortable. It is one thing to be pregnant for 9 months like a standard human pregnancy, but she is doing this in 6 months. It takes a toll on you all and I do not envy you at all,” he replies with wide eyes.
“I think you should voice your concerns to Brittany if I were you. I know I would want Derik to talk to me if he was that concerned about me. Keeping it in can cause issues later on and I know you don’t want that,” Mallory tells him with a smile.
“You are both right. I know I need to talk to her. I am just scared that I am right,” he says with his head lowered. “I will talk to her after we finish doing this.”
“Andrew, go talk to your mate and figure out what is going on. It is important for you to be in on the same page with her. Derik and I have got the rogue,” I tell him nodding towards the packhouse.
He walks up and gives me a huge hug. “Thank you so much Connor. I appreciate it.”
“Go man. We have this. Take care of Brittany and yourself.” I pat him on the back before he takes off towards the house. “This s**t is all happening too close together. Why does it have to pour when it rains?”
“Well, dude we haven’t had much of anything going on in the last year or so. Of course, we are due for something,” Derik states with a smirk on his face.
I smack him in the back of the head. “That was a rhetorical question dumbass,” I retort with sarcasm.
“I know you were, ass hat,” he laughs through his reply knowing he annoyed me with his dumbass answer. “I just wanted you to lighten up and laughter is the best medicine.”
Lexi slaps her forehead. “OMG… you are both dorks. Get your heads in the game. I have a funny feeling this isn’t going to go the way we want it to.”
With Lexi’s statement, the laughing dies down. She is right and I know it. I need to focus because these rogues were on our land and they attacked our mate. We must find out why. We need answers and I have a feeling he was lower on the totem pole and there is someone leading them.
“Lexi, I am assuming you want to be there? We normally don’t allow you in the interrogation room, but I understand the need you must feel with wanting answers. Derik, it is up to you if you want Mallory there.”
To be honest, I don’t want any of them there. I think it is necessary for Lexi to be there. The girl is just as much her mate as she is ours. I know she is, but I just worry about how she will handle it. Don’t say that dude, our mate is strong as hell. She is one of the best female fighters we have and you know that. I do know that, but if it wasn’t for Alice and the way she rages, I wouldn’t want Lexi by my side. I want her safe. She is stronger than you give her credit.
